The Archers - It's not about the money, money, money, think about Jill's honey, honey, honey, Justin wants to farm by satnav, forget about the prize tag.

Will The Dopeys have buggered off by the end of this thread?
Will Tom finally reach home, after weeks of trekking through the tundra?

Breakdown brought on by losing Grange Farm & having to move to an urban high-rise

Iirc poor Clarrie came home & found Joe at the kitchen table with the dead ferrets

Sad
Selks · 06/12/2014 22:34

Oh that's awful Sad

What year was this? I must have missed this somehow.

Bluestocking · 06/12/2014 22:50

Oh the poor ferrets. I did shed a little tear over them. Far more tear-jerking than horrible Piggoi clattering her dentures at Tony's bedside.

Ed'n'Emmur was sweet, although the double "you're a clever woman" thing was terribly artificial - I've never heard anyone say the phrase apart from, perhaps, in a Radio 3 interval talk about Aphra Behn or something similarly highbrow. But arranging the lights and the key so little what's-his-face could do the switch-on was lovely.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 23:13

It was some time in 2000, selks. They got behind with the rent & were evicted. It was very painful to listen to.

When Oliver bought Grange Farm they resented him bitterly for years although he was just an innocent blow-in.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 06/12/2014 23:17

Selks that episode is the main reason why I feel furious if anyone suggests that the Grundys are just light relief. It was one of the most shocking things I've ever heard broadcast.

Selks · 06/12/2014 23:44

That was before I started (properly) listening, so that explains why I wasn't aware of it. It's so out of character for Joe as well, who cares for animals - his tenderness towards Bartleby is always something I love. He must have been heartbroken. Sad

GypsyFloss · 07/12/2014 08:14

I remember that time, it was really quite difficult listening.

guineapiglet · 07/12/2014 09:58

It was a terrible time for the Grundys, I remember Joe and Eddie saying goodbye to Grange farm...but the ferret scene was devestating. Their time being regimes was utter misery to listen toSadJoe has always had a real understanding of his 'beasts' and country ways. ... They are all so settled and content know, especially with the boys reconciling somewhat. It did occur to me that if/when they get to the Hazel/eviction script they would have Wills house to squeeze in to.

guineapiglet · 07/12/2014 09:59

Regimes??
Rehomed....

Darn iPhone too quick for meXmas Grin

R4 · 07/12/2014 18:07

Re the Telegraph articles: it does seem a little pointless to bust a gut getting the sound effects right if the SL are pants. Listeners tune in for the story, not to judge the quality of gravel-walking.Hmm

The Ed'n'Em story on Friday was nice but I would be a bit peeved if my OH arranged housing and signed us up to a liability without consulting me. But Go Ed; it's about time he had a break.

PhaedraIsMyName · 07/12/2014 19:26

Well tonight's episode was pure filler.

I remember the ferret episode. I think the BBC issued a warning beforehand.

TopazRocks · 07/12/2014 19:31

And of course the story of the Grundys being 'exiled' to Meadow Rise made the helping of the unmentionable one all the more poignant last year. I don't recall the time scale but taking on Bartleby was a real turning point for Joe. He was devastated by having to live in the town in a flat when he'd lived for all his life in the country.

R4, I do kind of agree - except could you imagine us all moaning (for pages and pages!)if we did notice a scene with the wrong door bell or gravel-walking?Grin

BringYourOwnSnowman · 07/12/2014 19:31

Well I have decide to stop listening and only come on the thread until I can be absolutely sure I won't accidentally listen to Kate.

As for making the cast read king Lear before the recording - s o'c is a pretentious twat, non?

I know a few people who have read classics at Oxford and they all thought they were much cleverer than they actually were. So whilst I wouldn't be surprised if he had I do seem to recall he read English (no offence to anyone who read classics at Oxford btw)

TopazRocks · 07/12/2014 19:45

I find the sparse biographical detail out there on Sean O'C just does not satisfy my inherent nosiness.Smile In a sense it's as it should be, that he should be considered on his professional achievements and not his 'history'. I wonder of he applied to Oxbridge and didn't get in, so is now vague about where he did go. I've encountered this sort of phenomenon before. Hmm Xmas Hmm

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 07/12/2014 19:47

Mimsy addressed that upthread, BYOS - she thinks he was misquoted in the DT piece & actually said he read 'the classics' (which makes a lot more sense)

I'm with you on avoiding hearing Kate if poss Grin - 'listening' via this thread is really satisfying.

I chose to listen to Thu's & Fri's epis after reading about them here (& did enjoy them) but am still massively holding back in general.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 07/12/2014 19:50

Mimsy linked to this piece

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/11172659/Sean-OConnor-The-man-who-sexed-up-the-Archers.html

He read English at UCL. Nothing wrong with UCL Smile

Iwantacampervan · 07/12/2014 19:51

Are we likely to hear Kate as she's currently behind the bar in Walford (Eastenders) with Hazel ? Will there be a 'new' Kate or maybe she will remain a silent and communicate with all the others by mime.

R4 · 07/12/2014 19:52

Yes, I looked up SOC's wiki entry too. They usually mention early life, schooling, etc but his details are not there. Very suspicious.Hmm

I liked today's 'filler' episode. God bless the Grundys, one and all except Will.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 07/12/2014 19:54

I do feel that Tom thing who wrote the most recent piece, presenting himself as an aficionado, completely shot himself in the foot with 'George, a toddler' Hmm

R4 · 07/12/2014 19:56

Why have there been all these articles in the Telegraph? Is it some sort of charm offensive by SOC because the public's grumblings are starting to be recognised by those On High?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 07/12/2014 20:04

Good Q, R4 Hmm

There should have been a new Month in Ambridge from Nancy a couple of weeks ago...Confused

BringYourOwnSnowman · 07/12/2014 20:05

Well feedback is talking about the change in actors and associated character changes

TopazRocks · 07/12/2014 20:06

I don't mind Kate. She does stir things up a bit but that's okay as something has to happen!!

I am still worrying about what Will will do/say when he hears of THE engagement. I fear he might be miffed as I suspect he still 'has feelings' for Emma. Which is a shame for Nic particularly. We'll see .....

BringYourOwnSnowman · 07/12/2014 20:08

Pointed out that pip sounds 35!

Sean can't come on the show because he's up to his eyeballs in the Christmas special (which I completely unnecessary). Pah, who needs listeners anyway.

TopazRocks · 07/12/2014 20:09

Maybe Nancy not well? I do like her columns - though rely on you lot as we buy the Guardian rarely now the price has gone up, and up and up.
