The Archers - It's not about the money, money, money, think about Jill's honey, honey, honey, Justin wants to farm by satnav, forget about the prize tag.

Will The Dopeys have buggered off by the end of this thread?
Will Tom finally reach home, after weeks of trekking through the tundra?

The Emma and Ed scene was captivating. Enjoyed it a lot. It's been well developed as a story for ages, with Ed's self esteem being so eroded with his work problems and so on, and it's been lovely to see Emma sticking by him. Emma herself if a great character who has been really well, and quite subtly, developed by the SWs. I enjoy her a lot, with all her flaws.

unitarian · 06/12/2014 11:58

It must be something serious to have made Brian resign so maybe he knows now what Justin's up to and we might find out on Sunday.

Brian is still a shareholder, I think, and so is Lillian.

I recall that Clarrie chose Will & Ed's godparents well. Caroline is Will's I think but who is Ed's?

ppeatfruit · 06/12/2014 12:15

Ref Ed jnr. being a hero; do we actually know what happened at Tony's accident? He saved Henry too apparently but I don't remember that being described, Just Hellinn screaming stand still to him.

Though I must be like an elephant because I remember him saving Emmur's life in a road accident when they were courting. Grin

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 06/12/2014 12:20

I don't know - who are Ed's godparents?

Rosie perhaps? Phil? David? I can't remember anyone ever claiming the title or wanting to offer a godparently hand or chequebook ...

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 12:22

he saved her life but the accident was his fault, wasn't it? Stolen car? (Will's car???)

ppeatfruit · 06/12/2014 12:28

Oh sorry Caroline is godparent to both Ed and Will I THINK!!

ppeatfruit · 06/12/2014 12:30

TheOneWith But IIRC Emmur was goading him to go faster than was sensible.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 06/12/2014 12:35

You sure ppeat?Xmas Confused

It's just that I remember her very clearly offering Will somewhere to live (during the Meadow Rise business) specifically because she was his godmother ...

Someone will know.Xmas Wink

ppeatfruit · 06/12/2014 12:57

Yes I'm fairly sure (you've got me thinking now) but she has helped them both before. It would be cruel of the ClarEd not to do that for both of them wouldn't it?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 13:29

I have a feeling that one reason Oliver champions Ed is to sort of match Caroline's relationship with Will. I don't think Caroline is Ed's godmother either (but I don't know who is)

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11275761/The-Archers-secrets-revealed-why-Ed-Grundy-has-a-BandQ-sink.html

'Charles Collingwood, who plays Brian Aldridge, says: “If the studio ever caught fire, the first thing I’d save would be that ironing board.” '

I love this stuff Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 13:39

oh gosh - even better - a whole article!

(haven't read it yet)

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/11276382/Behind-the-scenes-at-The-Archers-the-secrets-of-Ambridge.html

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 13:49

'O’Connor...studied Classics at university, and he loves the show’s potential to explore themes kicked about by Aeschylus (dynasties, the accumulation of sin and guilt), Ibsen (Helen, read A Doll’s House before it’s too late!) and Hardy (most plots, really). He was the show’s story producer from 1999 to 2000, and in that time arranged the inheritance of Brookfield, making the actors read the opening scene of King Lear before they recorded.'

My italics - I didn't know that!!! So he should know more than most about the inheritance saga

(but only Lear, no other Shakespeare refs. Interesting)

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 13:54

It's a long & interesting piece but he spoils it a bit with 'Lower Locksley' & 'George, a toddler' [hmm[

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 13:55

Hmm even!

northernlurker · 06/12/2014 14:12

That's a fascinating article.

GypsyFloss · 06/12/2014 14:36

Wow, that article really highlighted to me just how much I see Ambridge in my head as I listen and how, despite the naff plots and character transplants they really do manage to create a village from not very much at all.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 06/12/2014 15:17

Thank you TOWtNS for the Torygraph article. Went beautifully with my port and crisps and some caper on the radio.

Was trying to glean some clues - there appeared to be a future for LL.

Fun!

TopazRocks · 06/12/2014 15:27

I loved the door bells. I wonder if they ever press the wrong one in error. I imagine they can just re-do in that event. Thanks, TheOne.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 16:01

It is fascinating, isn't it - esp that little hint about Kenton...

I've now read the Gillian Reynolds piece, about old Tom, & how good soaps work. She thinks changing the actor doesn't matter but then says this:

'What’s gone seriously wrong with Coronation Street over a couple of decades is that plot has become more important to its makers than character. The more a series relies on situations imposed on its characters, rather than those that spring from the people themselves, the weaker it will become'

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/11223642/The-Archers-Tom-Archer-is-changing-and-I-dont-care.html

But isn't that what SO'C has been doing?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 06/12/2014 17:34

Lovely article, but yes, not checking the spelling of Lower Loxley? Not knowing that Keira is the toddler, not George?

I think she's also wrong about Sean O'Connor having read Classics at university. I imagine he said he read the classics, which is rather different. In this Telegraph article from a few weeks ago it says that he read English at UCL.

Off now to see what Gillian Reynolds has to say.

Selks · 06/12/2014 22:13

The "Behind the scenes.." article says that Joe Grundy killed his ferrets by crushing their heads Confused Shock ..what on earth?? Anyone remember this?....why did he do that?

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 22:18

Yes, I remember Sad

They were living in that awful council flat (well, awful for them)

I can't remember if it was 'no pets' or if Joe just couldn't see anything beyond where they were but he decided there was no future for his ferrets & it was better for them not to go on

I did actually listen to that epi. It was awful

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 06/12/2014 22:20

Sorry, too much awful

But it was

Selks · 06/12/2014 22:22

Had a quick google and it mentions Joe having a sort of breakdown?
