She's got a whole calendar to use!

OP posts:
kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 19:51

So the injuries are:

T12-L1 incomplete spinal injury (incomplete means extent of injury and potential recovery not clear) - leading to lack of feeling and paralysis from hips down, incontinence

Pneumothorax (main worry there is oxygen deprivation, not a problem here as they got him on oxygen straight away), presumably from broken ribs

What else was there? Missed it while remembering similar circumstances in real life. If only this kind of thing were not real life.

He'd be at risk of aortic dissection... quick way to SOTMC. Based on my personal experiences, potentially a better outcome than T-L spinal injury, unless the person has extreme personal strength and positivity hitherto not seen in Tony.

guineapiglet · 14/11/2014 19:51

Another one who was a bit choked up, luckily Pat was near enough to get to his bedside quickly. Poor Tony, it always happens to him... Maybe Brine will see this as yet another Monopoly type farm to add to his collection. Everyone will rally round and NewTom can come and reign whilst Tony recovers, hope he does couldn't bear more of Helen's self pity!!

BasketzatDawn · 14/11/2014 20:07

Kiri.fractured tib and fib too.Sad

I'm sure Grundys will not gloat - they are actually nice and helpful and caring neighbours in such crises - but they will et more work nonetheless. Not sure what Brine and 'Brookfield' will do. It could go any way.

Off to eat birthday tea now (Mr B is 21 again!!)

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 14/11/2014 20:07

Thing is they've already done one "Tony struggles back from life threatening disaster" story. Would they really want to repeat that?

Just think - at this moment Peggy is jabbing her phone, desperately trying to get hold of golden grandson.

cheminotte · 14/11/2014 20:11

It was Tony then..Had me biting my nails and welling up..Was definitely stupid / entitled of Helen to leave Henry there, was just being selfish as usual.
Thanks for the medical summary kiri

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/11/2014 20:12

Tonight's episode on the Radio iplayer now.

Off to LA...

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 14/11/2014 20:12

Would imagine rallying around the stricken Bridge Farm clan will delay D&R for just long enough to give the blinkin' butterfly and the sinkhole time to do their stuff?

BringYourOwnSnowman · 14/11/2014 20:20

I know you all hate Peggy but can you imagine seeing your baby like that. They may not have the best relationship but I'm sure she will rally round as much as she can

I think Brian will get outbid and lose out on Brookfield causing fall out. D and r will still pull out later on but not too soon. Can't have all their story threads converging too neatly!!!

I really hope they don't kill off tony or make him wheelchair bound. He is clearly going to be physically debilitated and unable to work on the farm though.

I think Nigel would have been a good person to be in a wheelchair because it would have shown the emotional impact on a you ng family, a physically active man, a family business and also how having money doesn't mean you have an easy life

Whilst some of that applies to tony he is that bit older and was already in precarious health. He also has adult children to take the strain (and a rather lovely megalomaniac son in law)

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:21

Thanks Basketz - open fracture of tibia and fibula - hope they've pumped him full of antibiotics. Ooo. Anthrax, anyone? (ghoulish. but think of the agricultural educational opportunity...)

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/11/2014 20:28

More likely tetanus.

Have just listened again. I missed the very beginning first time round - Ed was MAGNIFICENT! What a hero.

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:28

BYOS, hmm perhaps don't underestimate the effect of a spinal injury in someone Tony's age, even as compared to Nigel's... Tony would be bloody miserable, and Pat would work herself into the grave looking after him even if the rehab is extremely successful. Then the useless kids would be crap at replacing their mother and Tony would get even more depressed. However (clutching at straws) Johnny might step up and train as a nurse and be awesome as Tony's carer. That'd be extremely cool, d'you hear me, SoC?

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:32

(true, re the tetanus. But surely farmers would be vaccinated? But we now know you need boosters every 10 years. Maybe that would be the educational opportunity instead, if Tony hasn't had a booster...)

BringYourOwnSnowman · 14/11/2014 20:32

Oh I'm not - but I think it is more stage of life.

I just hope they don't do for the 'relentlessly harrowing' and have some happiness somewhere!!!

I thought the regulars acted really well

awfulomission · 14/11/2014 20:35

Yikes! Sorry, DM doesn't pick up the phone of an evening and I had to talk to someone about tonight's episode.

Prime ground for Rob to move in even further on the family now. Noooo!

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:41

A positive spinal injury story would be absolutely great if handled sensitively but giving enough info about the daily difficulties. It might be easier to achieve this if Daniel gets injured on a tour in Iraq/Syria, to be honest...

(I'm projecting - my family was wrecked for a few decades by a spinal injury that initially had positives (good, almost miraculous recovery) but descended lower and lower into the 'relentlessly harrowing' territory. Now it's just not talked about but the unresolved issues penetrate everything. It was utterly shite, and I wouldn't wish it on any family)

BringYourOwnSnowman · 14/11/2014 20:47

I'm sorry kirite. I hope they do handle it well as it is horrible when you listen to something that makes you want to scream 'you don't get it!' It must be hard for you to hear.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 14/11/2014 20:48

Is this going to be horrible for you to listen to kiri?

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:51

thanks BYOS. I wasn't expecting to have a blubbing return to 10yo self over dinner this evening. Shiteous things, spinal injuries.

kiritekanawa · 14/11/2014 20:51

Zero, yes. But fascinating.

Er, sorry for thread hijack Blush

BringYourOwnSnowman · 14/11/2014 20:54

That sounds tough. I hope things are better than they were but I know these injuries are life changing.

I'm kind of annoyed they are throwing it in on top of all the other big storylines because I think it deserves care and attention from the village and the sw

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 14/11/2014 20:54

Thread hijack?

Amateur

BringYourOwnSnowman · 14/11/2014 20:56

Eg if brine brings up Brookfield I would expect Jenny to tell him to stfu as she has to think of her brother

And Jill - it's her nephew - this kind of thing should make her want to tell David she couldn't give a stuff about moving

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 14/11/2014 20:57

Forgot the obligatory Grin

northernlurker · 14/11/2014 20:57

I've just listened back to back and it's quite good although yes why MORE drama. Only seems three minutes since Chris was 'neath the hooves of huge horse and alice was getting the mobile call of doom.

What I am really pleased about was the portrayal of Ed. Like Will (but with less whining) Ed is a responsible, capable professional and he showed that in his handling of the situation. It's easy to dismiss him and Emma with all the money issues etc but Ed's been around stock all his life and his behaviour in the episode is absolutely in character with that.

PUBLIC INFORMATION POINT because I can't see this in the thread lower down and if it is I apologise:

Cows don't like little children. They aren't used to them, they don't understand them. Small children make jerky fast movements and squeak. Cows are used to slower moving big adults mostly with deep voices. Frightened animals lash out. This was not a factor here but cows don't like dogs either.

SO

(I apologise if this is teaching Peggy to suck eggs btw)

If you're walking in the country with young dcs give cows a wide berth whether there's a bull there or not. If you have a dog and they go for it LET IT OFF THE LEAD! It can run faster than them and fit through smaller gaps. You can't. Pick up small children and carry them.

I suspect we will be hearing that if Johnny had been carrying Henry this wouldn't have happened......

Icimoi · 14/11/2014 20:59

Agree about Ed rising magnificently to the challenge - he was the only one who kept his head, wasn't he? I hope he's properly recognised for it.
