Thank you, Araminta. I thought being a sous chef was a bit too low for him to sink!

We have the prospect of all sorts of interesting people at Peggy's party. Ian and Rob in the same room, along with Jim and Pat. Rob had better be on his best behaviour.

Bluestocking · 12/11/2014 20:19

You're right, Araminta, Roooth would have gone from Heatherpet and Solly's to student digs to her first married home at Brookfield (was it Rickyard Cottage?) without ever having to buy or sell a place, so she will have no idea of just how long even an ordinary house purchase can take. And this is clearly going to be very long-drawn-out with much blood on the carpet. Maybe Amside will swoop in and build executive homelets all over the pasture!

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 12/11/2014 20:19

You, me & David Blunkett, BYOS Grin

BringYourOwnSnowman · 12/11/2014 20:39

Thanks pseudo (made me feel better!) but if I'm not listening I can't really comment!!

Who would have thought David blunkett and I have so much in common (ok probably just attitude to archers!)

Abra1d · 12/11/2014 20:41

So Brian and Adam just want to package off Brookfield and sell the house and a little bit of land and keep the rest?

Phil Archer would be turning in his grave!

BringYourOwnSnowman · 12/11/2014 20:59

So after not listening to the archers because I didn't want to get wound up I have now listened to four thought and am completely wound up by the smug twat presenting.

I think I need to find myself a dark room with no technology!!

guineapiglet · 12/11/2014 21:10

Another vote for Nelaon Gabriel, who I loved listening to, and also George Barford ex copper and ex game keeper, who was married to Christine...they were like chalk and cheese. William named his son after him and was bereft when he died. He was such a great character.

guineapiglet · 12/11/2014 21:11

Nelaon???
Nelson

Can I just say thank you for response from DDD on p36 - very interesting. And I hope everyone got that my comments on carrying calculators were tongue in cheek. Though since MN has no tongue in cheek emoticon it can be quite hard to demonstrate. I will now try very very hard to create no further derailments on this thread. Smile

I didn't hear tonight's epi and nobody I live with seemed able to give me a synopsis when I got in. And the bbc site won't let me listen. All I know is turkeys were talked about. Sadly, when I was rooting about on the bbc site I got some spoilers for later in the week, and that has annoyed me somewhat as I don't like spoilers. Sad

My fave characters of the past - I liked Nelson and his dad (I thought of them as a bit like Steptoe and son, esp. as I though N's dad whose name I have forgotten sounded a bit like Steptoe). In a grudging way - bc I dislike homophobes and bigots generally - I did like Sid. He had some good lines and played his role as village landlord quite well. Julia Pargetter was great, esp. once it was revealed what her background really was. I'm a sucker for a reinvention story. Grin

DadDadDad · 12/11/2014 21:15

There's always the other TA on the TV at the moment.

Or is it a major faux pas to mention television on the radio addicts board?Confused

BasketzatDawn · 12/11/2014 21:26

I typed above without reading page 37. I see somebody else - ?cheminotte - has a grudging liking for Sid too. Grin

DDD, I've no idea what the other TA is - though I'm sure I've come across it. But I don't watch TV. I've no idea if it's a faux pas either. Confused I'd have thought - almost - anything goes. Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 12/11/2014 21:30

Basketz, Nelson's dad was Walter Gabriel, me old pal, me old beauty

Icimoi · 12/11/2014 21:36

That episode has set up a splendid fight, to be fair. Brine will be foaming at the mouth at Deavid putting profit above family, them Adam will accidentally let slip that the plan was to sell the family farmhouse off as quickly and profitably as they could, and everyone will go ballistic.

BasketzatDawn · 12/11/2014 21:46

Of course it was Walter. Thanks, Theone. My memory is shocking just now. Thanks

Although I don't know exactly what passed tonight, I can't say I'm surprised at the possible fall-out, and Brine putting business first. I will try to be plugged in tomorrow at 2 PM. Smile

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 12/11/2014 21:48

Nelson's dad was Walter Gabriel. They didn't sound as if they were related.

The TA on TV would be The Apprentice, I assume. Never watched it.

DadDadDad · 12/11/2014 21:59

Maybe in honour of The Apprentice, the next Archers thread could be called simply "Sean O'Connor - you're fired" Smile

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 12/11/2014 22:09

Well, I wouldn't go that far. There are some good things but I think he's just overegging the pudding. He needs to calm down a bit and put less on the plate, as Marcus Wareing would say on Masterchef.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2014 22:21

He should note that what people do like is things like RobHell which is all about character - the gradually tightening grip - not plonking plots. It's like one of his writers is George Eliot and another is, oh I don't know, lets be obvious and say Jeffrey Archer.

R4 · 12/11/2014 23:00

I just wondered if someone on here could clarify how Ruth and David are going to sell Brookfield and get round the will and the inheritance thing. I thought if it was sold they had to divide the money up?

Apparently the siblings have been very understanding and agreed to roll over their interest, so they will have shares in the Northumberland farm instead. Despite the fact that Lizzie must be out of pocket due to having to pay off Roy and Hayley.Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2014 23:15

I wasn't sure that the sibs actually have agreed this - I think they're trying not to rock the boat at the moment but when push comes to shove not sure they'll roll over.

What I don't understand is how the logistics of moving farm can work - hard enough to move house - presumably they can't move the dairy herd until there's some way to milk them and the stock farm (if they are succesful in buying it, which can't be a given) doesn't have a parlour.

Icimoi · 12/11/2014 23:30

Kenton certainly seemed keen to get his hands on some money, though to be fair his main reaction is that he thinks they're stupid to sell up anyway.

When they were talking about all the interest in the farm from potential buyers, what I wondered was: if there are all these people with £5 mill knocking around, desperate to buy up farms to avoid Capital Gains Tax, how come they haven't already snapped up the place in Prudhoe?

DadDadDad · 13/11/2014 00:05

On 7th November, I wrote on this thread:

This thread will end on 13th November.

I think I'm looking good on that one. icimoi - you did well for a beginner on the last thread, but you need to leave these predictions to the professionals. Wink

DadDadDad · 13/11/2014 00:06

And, no I did not just sit up until midnight so I could post that. Shock (Nor am I planning to make 30 posts to ensure my prediction is fulfilled - I'm off to bed).

BitOutOfPractice · 13/11/2014 00:08

You are part actuary, part mystic TripleD

unitarian · 13/11/2014 00:43

I've moved house four times and it always seems to take at least three months from acceptance of the offer to completion whether there's a chain involved or not. I dread to think how complicated a farm sale is.

To be fair to whoever is writing the move plot, David has worked out the timings so that the cows are milked before setting off and again immediately on arrival. I doubt if the writer has ever been stuck on the A1M for hours though......

That handshake? I understood that to mean that they had a deal at market price subject to searches etc. Brian was assured that they didn't feel he was taking advantage of them by registering his interest early.
In other words, Brian thinks they've made a deal.

David and Ruth, OTOH, were led to believe that 'Jenny and I' were buying the place as a farm and as a home for some part of their family. This is sort of what I was getting at when I queried Brian invoking Jenny's name.
In other words, David & Ruth have been misled because they are happier to sell to Brian to 'keep it in the family'.

But Brian was taking advantage of them by playing the family card. If he can hive off 50 acres to sell with the farmhouse and make a million back straight away then obviously David and Ruth would be better off selling piecemeal as Graham Ryder suggested.

I feel a family feud breaking out.
