x-post there BYOS!

GypsyFloss · 29/10/2014 19:53

I think she could and would stay with him as he would tell her that it was her fault that he hit her and that she had pushed him into doing it :(

The Jess pregnancy story is almost a bit of a complication I feel. I'm interested in how it will pan out but I don't want it to detract from the main part of the HelRob story. I also want this story to end with Helen getting support from Women's Aid and undertaking the Freedom Programme, as this is the second emotionally abusive relationship she has been in.

Icimoi · 29/10/2014 19:59

I do hope that Helen clocked that Charlie's sister was apparently wearing a revealing dress. Surely Knob can hardly say that what was acceptable in Justin's sidekick's plus one isn't acceptable for Hellin?

unitarian · 29/10/2014 20:01

I wonder if the Jess pregnancy was introduced as a safety device so that the abuse storyline could be brought to a head and given a hasty end if the editor felt it was too edgy.
Part of me hopes not because it is a brave story to portray in real time as they have so far but another part of me just wants Helen to wake up and run for her life.

GypsyFloss · 29/10/2014 20:02

Oh I think he can.

Icimoi · 29/10/2014 20:17

I do hope Helen has the balls to point out to Rob that she was overdressed compared to other people. But something tells me she won't.

BringYourOwnSnowman · 29/10/2014 20:18

I agree that the pregnancy is a get out clause. I kind of hope it's not robs baby so we can lose Jess

For me, the best way for the story to pan out is over a couple of years. It becomes the occasional shock and she falls out with friends/family as they try and help her but she isn't ready to see she needs help. People may mention 'poor Helen' etc and we get scenes like the other night and then scenes of them out and about playing the happy family and we see Helen out and about being 'normal'

And then there isn't a big thing that opens her eyes but something small - like he throws Henry's favourite toy away because its a bit dirty or something, and she runs home and gets proper help.

The biggest thing about abuse is that it often isn't obvious to the wider world and it is very much behind closed doors. I think that would be a good thing for people to learn - don't just assume from the outside that everything is good on the inside

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 29/10/2014 20:19

Oh, I dunno, I seem to remember that what first got me really hooked was when Kate was being an out and out selfish shit about Phoebe, and that has to be around 15 years ago. Goodness, how time flies

Icimoi, that was precisely when i got properly dragged in too Grin & did the actual pacing the kitchen & ranting at her!

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 29/10/2014 20:21

'Can't you see that Charlie won't be judged for what his sister wears in anything like the way I'd be judged for what my partner wears? Charlie's sister won't be acting as hostess if he ever has to take important business contacts out to dinner! You might - and looking like a slapper just won't cut it. I'm sorry, Helen, I really thought better of you than that.

Oh please, don't start crying. I think it might be best if I slept in the spare room tonight.'

Bluestocking · 29/10/2014 20:23

Poor Helen. Did she end up at the ball in a slanket and wellies?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 29/10/2014 20:33

I think she wore something like this, with low heels and minimal make up.

Lovely as that sack dress is, Pseudo, it shows far too much arm for true modesty.

cheminotte · 29/10/2014 20:41

lol Pumpkin !

Icimoi · 29/10/2014 20:42

Surely Helen's been to Hunt Balls before and is better placed than Rob to know what is and is not suitable? I wish she'd said so.

cheminotte · 29/10/2014 20:42

Also what did Justin call her - his Helpmet? Can someone explain that one?

nauticant · 29/10/2014 20:46

helpmate

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 29/10/2014 20:47

Helpmate: A helpful companion or partner, especially one’s husband or wife

late 17th century (as helpmeet): from an erroneous reading of Gen. 2:18, 20, where Adam's future wife is described as ‘an help meet for him’ (i.e. a suitable helper for him). The variant helpmate came into use in the early 18th century.

OED online

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 29/10/2014 20:48

Lots of evangelical sites discussing this in earnest terms. Doesn't bode well for Helen. Seems to be a term of choice in circles where women are expected to be submissive to their menfolk. Poor, poor Helen. Sad

BTW, I don't give much for my chances of winning DadDadDad's competition. 5th November looks way too late for the next thread at this rate!

Shallishanti · 29/10/2014 20:51

really. allmimsy? they are discussing the Archers?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 29/10/2014 20:53

No, sorry, I meant the word helpmeet/helpmate.

Alsoflamingo · 29/10/2014 20:57

New to this thread. Not new to TA.

How long is Helen going to take before she wakes up to what a controlling sexist arse Rob is?

And is anyone else really really bored with the whole Route B storyline? Realise the SWs have made it pivotal to loads of other spin off plots, but still find it deeply tedious.

TallGiraffes · 29/10/2014 21:03

My newly pregnant emotions did not cope well with that episode, I want to shake and rescue her all at once.
