A big showdown tonight I hope.

Thanks to Zero (I think?) for the great title.

It's a shame MN talk will be offline for most of tomorrow - I'm sure Hayley could have done with starting a thread in relationships!

I agree R4 about the C&C storylines. Really tiresome now.
Yes, it was a great idea to have one now and again - but every other day? We're all adults, it's too obvious!

And Carol is annoying me still - or rather her antics are.
So she managed to defuse a spat between Bert and the Grundys? Great. But is the scriptwriting so uninspired that we couldn't be allowed to hear what she actually said? And are just treated to more allusion?

Pah.

stilllearnin · 10/10/2014 23:27

Do you know I once bumped into an old friend who was about to throw himself off the multi storey I'd parked in. I got him into my car but when I starts up to drive him back to mine, I realised I had radio head in the tape deck. We actually both found this hilarious as it is the most depressing music ever and it diffused the situation! Smile this is a good memory as we're both still around.

I was outraged by BYOS' empathy earlier but have listened to the podcast and yes, I felt a teeny bit sorry for him. But overall he was a twat!

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2014 23:36

CuP - but we did hear what Carol said - just to do Joes and then Bert do his as a solo encore (I may be oblivious to music but I got that!).

unitarian · 11/10/2014 03:51

Doesn't Hayley get the marital home & children? Her going away for a few days was probably less traumatic than actually trying to get the whining git to pack his bags and leave but she would get the house in RL so the kids can continue their education without disruption.

I have no sympathy for him. It's only a few weeks since he was going to leave Hayley and the kids. He had no thought for their welfare then and I'm pretty sure he's going to roll up at LL to persuade Lizzie that now nothing can keep them apart.
He'll probably try to guilt-trip Lizzie because she told Hayley the truth and interpret that as her wanting him.
'You know you want me, Elizabeth, deep down. We're meant to be together.' = I've got no job and nowhere to live because of you.

I warmed to Carol a bit there but I don't know what her purpose is, other than to show us that raised beds can be built in minutes. Why introduce a new character when there are other much loved characters that we don't hear from anymore?
Do they have a quota system - x number of widows, y number of young singles......., z number of couples?

Icimoi · 11/10/2014 04:53

I'm quite pleased Lynda isn't doing a Christmas show. It does all get quite samey - no-one wants to do it, Lynda bullies them into it, people don't turn up to rehearsals, people don't learn their lines, Lynda stresses, then it all comes good. It'll be quite nice to have a rest from sitting through all that lot.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 11/10/2014 14:08

But Ici, it's like the comfy blanket of the archers! Admittedly they handle some years better than others.

why don't the sw have a tanker carting nuclear waste crash into the AD and wipe the whole village and be done with it. We all know they want to start from scratch so just do it already rather than this death by a thousand cuts

R4 · 11/10/2014 14:31

Is Lynda's show going to replaced in the schedule by a 'comedy' Grundy Orbis Christi de Turcia Divinus.

PetulaGordino · 11/10/2014 14:46

The Christmas show is one of those occasions (like harvest supper etc) where you get lots of characters together and overheard conversations and gossip etc

PetulaGordino · 11/10/2014 14:48

"Grundy Orbis Christi de Turcia Divinus"

My thoughts and some questions

Who the actual feck IS Carol Tregorran? Some rich widow whose late DH had an affair with Jennydarling and is now renting GLEBE cottage? Where did she live before? how does she properly fit in?

This nonsense about Helen giving up work forever for Henry - who is only 6 weeks younger than my DS who starts f/t school in Sept - surely it's just a sabbatical?!?

unitarian · 11/10/2014 15:14

Helen isn't noted for being rational, Olivia! It's yet another example of her bending to Rob's will. It will end in tears.

I too wonder about Carol. I get who she is but not what she is FOR.

Will MN being 'down' for half a day bugger up DadDadDad's prediction?

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 11/10/2014 15:29

Carol is mrs plotdevice

unitarian · 11/10/2014 15:52

But Linda could and does offer support to Jill.
Lizzie could have confided in Shula who has also had an affair.
Anyone else could employ Bert to build raised beds.
Susan's pursuit of Jenny's past indiscretion was going nicely without actually having to bring Carol in as a cast member.

Carol is unnecessary to any of the current plots while other characters are just parked in a siding.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2014 15:53

Carol and John Tregorran used to live in AMB. Olivia they were a popular bohemian couple with obviously an 'open' marriage. Grin

John has KTB and wanted a green funeral back in Amb. it seems Carol has returned too but BEFORE she also goes to meet her maker Grin

ref. Hayley et al we have NEVER heard about her DM before. As someone has said. Once Vicky knows Poly boy will be in DEEP do dos. Grin

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 11/10/2014 15:55

I don't understand the generational thing though
Isn't Jenny closer in age to the Archer "children" than Jill?
I.e. why was she shagging Carol's DH?

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2014 16:00

That's true I think, probably JD was so pissed off about Brian that she didn't care how old he was; but I asked my DM if she remembered what JT and JD got up to and she doesn't remember. PEGGY REMEMBERS ALRIGHT . The intimation is that they DID DTD but no one on here knows either.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 11/10/2014 16:13

oh so John Tregorran was a revenge shag?
I am not 100% clear about Jenny's pre Brian life other than there was Adam's dad - was it Roger?

unitarian · 11/10/2014 16:18

The way Jenny talked to Brian about John didn't seem to me to carry any guilt and Brian was perfectly fine about it. OK he's not Mr Fidelity but I do think he would operate a double standard so it would seem that he's not in the least suspicious.

Adam does seem uneasy about any mention of John though as does Peggy and Susan definitely thinks they DTD.

This might seem a bit too dark for TA but what if Adam's unease is because John was more interested in him than Jenny. Just a thought.....

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 11/10/2014 16:45

That would be dark but given everything going on at the moment it would give them a 'current' storyline whilst not actually having to do the court case etc. cynical maybe.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2014 16:53

Adam would've been a baby or a little boy, I'm not au fait with their ages etc. Oh blimey Shock

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 11/10/2014 17:08

So if it was 35 years ago Adam would have been in his teens

It's probably unlikely as carol seems to imply he was always playing away with the ladies

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 11/10/2014 17:09

Olivia Adam's father is (presumed to be) Paddy Redmond, a disreputable Irish cowman who left Ambridge a long, long time ago. (I've been trying to c&p a BBC page on Jennifer - but something is refusing atm.) It was a scandal of course. But then she married Roger Travers-Macy who is Debbie's father.

PCBurnsarrestedme · 11/10/2014 17:31

my theory is that Carol has been inserted ready embedded to fill the gap of Ambridge wise old lady, should anything happen to Patricia Greene...

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 17:44

Helen giving up work is so obviously about being there to cook dinner (though clearly not tuna) and iron shirts for Rob than to be 'there' for Henry. She is going to be upduffed by Xmas so there will be no excuse to go back to work when H starts school.

ppeatfruit · 11/10/2014 17:50

I've a feeling that Brian is a 'What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander" type of chap, he can't really be jealous can he ? Grin. I don't reckon he gives a shxx about Jenny's love life; he wouldn't have married her and taken on her DCs if he'd been uptight would he?
