Roll up roll up for The Wedding special from Catheter Hall. Is the lark flying high? Will Krusty jam that ring on the porky finger?

BOFster, ah, but I wasn't a Catholic girl...Grin (though I AM nice, I hope!)

I feel for the yodelling Kirsty, but I also think the Archer clan were pretty vile to Tom. Which surprises me, as I have precious little time for his sausage-centred ways.

BasketzatDawn · 26/04/2014 19:51

didn't somebody study at Harper Adams as in real agri college? Was it Ruth? Back a generation ago there seemed to be much more talk in the Archers about schools. Now choice seems to be only for the really posh folk.

Re- Amy and midwifery, I am sure there must be a piece of research somewhere that shows offspring of public service types (and I include vicars in this) will tend towards public service; The Archers is top-heavy with characters who work in private sector either as employees or as the head honcho. And it goes on for generations, albeit often in family businesses. I think Amy is the token public service worker at present, and of course she was very handily around the night Henry was born. To save the day and the baby. Wink

Looking around the rural area I live in, there are a fair few who work in hospitals and schools, some with a fair commute as well as the locally employed ones. And several children of local farming families that I know are at uni doing totally unrelated courses.

When Alice was doing her Applying for Jobs in Canada thing, I couldn't help wondering why she wasn't applying to the oil and gas industry in Aberdeen area. Which is what my nephew has done, at similar age and with the same qualifications. Ata push she could even commute at weekends via Ryanair or whoever, and so stay in the cast. And they'd now be able to get really topical with the independence debate, and poor Alice will become a foreigner if Yes wins. And so forth.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/04/2014 19:52

Can I just say that I am in foreign parts at the moment, and as you probably know, it's not possible to listen to the iPlayer in forrinland

My bf, (non archers listener) unbeknownst to me, has downloaded some hacky type app and handed me his iPad this afternoon "I've got last nights episode for you it listen to. Shall I get you a beer?"

I should marry him shouldn't I?

Anyway, I am usually a tom apologist but I was cheering when the family gave it to him both barrels.

BasketzatDawn · 26/04/2014 19:52

AND they have horses in Aberdeen and Shire - so Chris could find work too.

BasketzatDawn · 26/04/2014 19:55

That is very lovely BitOUtofP. Whatever you do don't get Alice in as the wedding organiser though. You may end up with a balloon arch. Or not. Grin

BasketzatDawn · 26/04/2014 19:59

Yes, although I think the family said what they said due to their own anguish and shock, I do hope they look after Tom a bit now. I'd like to think Roy would be aloyal friend even if he fails to understand what has happened and why.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 26/04/2014 20:08

I still can't believe that Roy would forget that it was a Fergie that squished John - they were best buddies back then.

& even if he did forget the specific - not being a farmer - would he go for any vintage tractor, under the circs?

then all those "cheery" anecdotes about grooms at LL...

& waffling on & on with crass apologies for his crass mistake...

it was terribly clunky

Abra1d · 26/04/2014 20:12

For a daughter of oh-so-tasteful Jenny-darling a balloon arch idea seemed unworthy of Alice.

unitarian · 26/04/2014 20:31

BitOutOfPractice I was able to get TA on my phone in Turkey last week by following the usual link from the R4 homepage to TA and to podcasts.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/04/2014 21:17

Really uni? It always says "not available" whenever I'm outside the uk!!

I would do a last minute Tom style jilting if he mentioned a balloon arch Wink

stealthsquiggle · 27/04/2014 00:07

I am pretty sure Debbie has a cottage too, doesn't she? (what about Adam? Does he live in his? And Ruairah? Did he get one too?)

Redcliff · 27/04/2014 00:22

I wanted someone to give Tom a hug - he did seem to expect a pat on the back (the idiot) and although I know Pat and Tony were in shock I still think the recriminations could have waited. What is he going to do now ? Leave? Also didn't Tony love rubbing Toms nose in things with Peggy there ?

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2014 02:41

bitoutofpractice the iPlayer does work outside the UK for radio, it's only TV that's not available. I listen to the Today programme by iplayer all the time. However the easiest way to get TA is the podcast- just google Archers podcast then click on the green download box and it will play directly. Whatever you do though, don't use international data roaming as it will cost a fortune- make sure that is switched off and you are connected to wifi. I listen to TA this way every day in Hong Kong, also on trips to Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, China.

unitarian · 27/04/2014 02:52

The podcasts came in beautifully if the hotel had a decent wifi signal. Most did, one didn't.
DH was deeply impressed.

PocketFluff · 27/04/2014 08:26

I think this is the first time I've ever wished Sunday night to come quicker!

And did Kirsty open the door to Tom? Did they speak? WHAT DID THEY SAY?!

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2014 09:21

stealth no, Kate and Alice got cottages, Adam and Debbie got shares in the farm ( or some sort of promise to inherit them I think). All shaken up by question mark of whether Ruari will also want/ need a share in the farm, which has bizarrely never been discussed despite Brine being of an age where popping his clogs is not entirely unlikely.

Adam and Ian live in Honeysuckle cottage, which is on the Green (they are always involved in the Christmas lights switch on) and has a hot tub, installed I think when Lillian lived there (possibly pre-Matt). Not sure if Lillian owns it though.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 27/04/2014 09:29

Adam and Ian own it. I think they must have bought it from Matt and Lilian when they bought the Dower House or wherever it is they live now. I have a vague memory of shuddering at the thought of Matt and Lilian in the hot tub.

Wasn't there a big discussion about all of this after Ruairi came to live with Brian and Jennifer? I seem to recall some angst about the arrangements but can't now remember what was decided. I know Jennifer was very concerned to protect the adult children's interests. Brian is hoping that Ruairi will take an interest in the farm when he grows up which of course would be tricky for Adam and Debbie.

Cripes! Sorry about that.

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2014 09:35

Mimsy I am so sad that it has got to the point where I can't distinguish between discussions that took place on the Message Board and ones that were actually on the programme! I would like to think that Ruari's inheritance had been discussed but if it was I am surprised that neither you nor I can remember the outcome....Grin

Kirk1 · 27/04/2014 09:39

Wow, finally caught up on the thread, and Fridays episode. Thanks for the link WillieWaggledagger, having read that shortly before listening to Tony's rant at Tom, I wonder if John's response might have been less ashamed and more a slap on the back "well done little brother, welcome to the family" given his history with women!

Also, Blush because I thought the tractor was great. At least I have the excuse I didn't know, what's Roy's?

Is there an archers family tree somewhere? I can't seem to keep track of who is related to whom, and all the intermarrying seems to confuse matters even more.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 27/04/2014 09:51

This is very useful.

There are family trees floating about but they're generally out of date...

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2014 09:57

There is an Archers family tree mug available on the Archers Addicts website..

LillianGish · 27/04/2014 10:32

Listening to the Archers film (didn't someone on here coin that phrase). Just noticed Kirsty's "Sorry, but it's better this way," as she kills pheasant.
