Just don't be so careless with your watch Helen

OP posts:
stilllearnin · 01/03/2014 14:06

And who is writing the comments that they want r&h to live happily ever after?? Nooooo. (I thought the rob actor was quite dishy)

Someone said on earlier thread that TA does family/ unfairness/ realistic half-imagined slights best. That's why I love it. I don't need it to be sensational - but come on Rob cannot turn out ok-ish. There's been too many clues of future doom.

ppeatfruit · 01/03/2014 14:23

Well I've listened Zero Do you think it's a capitulation or just luurve?

i heard some good news on R4 the day before yesterday about major users of cotton (admittedly not arable or dairy farmers) like John Lewis and Ikea actually using their clout to make sure that it's farmed in a sustainable way (not in an eco niche way) to make the most difference to the environment.

I love the news that France has totally banned the nicotinoids that are killing the bees without waiting for the EU to ban it. There is a definite difference in the size of the bird populations already here. So although the fields are mostly empty esp. in the winter, there are thriving organic (also non spraying) farmers and coop org. farms and shops too.

nennypops · 01/03/2014 14:36

I can't see Rob being around for years as suggested. My bet is the truth will come out before Hellin goes up the aisle, perhaps all this will culminate in a juicy episode where Tony refuses to give her away and leaps up at the just impediment bit of the ceremony, and the scales fall from Hellin's eyes.

Deeply unpleasant though Rob is, I must admit to a bit of schadenfreude about Hellin being at the receiving end. She's so unpleasant and self-righteous about him when shouting at her parents, and her eventual inevitable admission that she has cocked up yet again should be deeply enjoyable.

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/03/2014 15:30

Quite. I want Hellin to end up as the Ambridge version of Miss Havishan - walled up in Brookfield in her wedding dress!

PrincessFiorimonde · 01/03/2014 16:13

I know it's not a popular view, but I feel rather sorry for Helen.

ppeatfruit · 01/03/2014 17:28

Snap Princess As i said upthread she's sooo desperate for a 'normal' relationship she's settled for an imperfect one.
IMO a very realistic storyline.

cheminotte · 01/03/2014 17:31

Just caught up. Thought Helen sounded pathetically grateful when she told her mum about the divorce - "he loves me enough" or similar. I also feel a bit sorry for her, I think she must have pretty poor self esteem to rush back to him the way she did and rush into living with him as if she's worried he'll change his mind.

justiceofthePeas · 01/03/2014 18:21

I think the whole point is H has painted herself into what will turn out to be an increasingly nasty corner.

She went back to him shamefully quick because she had made such a fuss out of ooh but it is lurve before Jess turned up and Rob humiliated her by dropping her. so when Jess left Rob took her on in a one out one in deal whereas in H eyes he had finished his marriage for her and that way it was destiny and not just her being the convenient OW.

And now she has been vile to her family.

So when he turns out to be a nasty bit of work she will not ltb because she has made her bed and capitulation would be more humiliating than pretending everything is fine and hoping that if she just behaves better he will change.

Otherwise if he just turned nasty you would assume she would hoik up her principles and leave.
Or at least that is where i am hoping it is going because there are so few EA storylines on anything and yet it is depressingly common and not well understood and many ppl cannot imagine why anyone would put up with it in this day and age ...but in this case they have set up a plausible back story

maybe i am.overinvested in TABlush

Really hope they don't back off from it though.

unitarian · 01/03/2014 19:32

I've been listening to TA for over 30 years and I've always felt you could miss a few weeks or even months and still be able to pick up the story but I've never been so keen to catch each episode as I am now.

Tommy · 01/03/2014 21:02

me too unitarian (although haven't caught up with Friday's yet) but I do wonder whether my keenness is half to do with this thread and the one on FB! It's great to discuss it all with other crazy addicts..... Grin

ppeatfruit · 02/03/2014 07:43

I reckon it's because TA has definitely improved since the demise of the last editor. Jill (the actress who plays her) said as much.

Although of course it's the icing on the cake to discuss it with like minded people Grin

AllMimsyWereTheBorogroves · 02/03/2014 08:52

Yes, with hindsight the reason we seemed to have Darrell, Darrell everywhere for months on end last year must have been because Vanessa was too busy clearing her desk to give much of a steer to the programme. The difference when Sean O'Connor took charge was palpable.

Halsall · 02/03/2014 10:52

Agree with Justice, Hellin is not only a deeply unpleasant and self-obsessed character, but also as stubborn as hell. She's been in numerous situations over the years where her own determined obtuseness has prevented her from backing down, and eventually it all goes to pot and she has to be rescued by the long-suffering Pat'n'Tone. Eg the experiment in living in her own flat (albeit a family property iirc?) ended messily and she was back at home yet again.

You'd really expect a reasonably educated and intelligent adult woman to be able to create a life and career independent of her family, but Hellin has never strayed more than a few miles from Ambridge. Admittedly this is for scripting purposes Grin but it is odd when you think about it.

She masquerades as a grown-up but is at heart a damaged and bewildered child.

I still don't like her though....

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/03/2014 11:01

This pole dancing debate is excruciating!

Bluestocking · 02/03/2014 11:11

I enjoyed the pole-dancing debate, especially Emmur's predictably brain-dead response to it. She is 100% Netmums, isn't she?

ppeatfruit · 02/03/2014 11:40

I enjoyed it too Bluestocking it was nice to have just the wimmin in TA for a whole episode and have them discussing something so different Grin

toldmywrath · 02/03/2014 14:38

Halfwildlingwoman Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. I have found my spiritual home! How did I not know that you lot talked about the Archers. Same here! I've only just discovered this-& so glad I have. Such an intelligent crowd, too ( script writers, take note oh they already have, cough ladder )
BeaLola -me too with the "All the time in the world remark"- that was so sad in the Bond film.
And so I'll pause until next Sunday (ominbus listener) Smile

ppeatfruit · 02/03/2014 14:59

halsall if you've got a willing family why wouldn't you use them? It's not easy bringing up a dc with a partner let alone without one. Which she refused to admit; Hellin is very stubborn you're right there.

Welcome toldmywrath Grin

toldmywrath · 02/03/2014 15:12

Thanks ppfruit
Also, I thought the same about the laptop comment as well (way up thread)

toldmywrath · 02/03/2014 15:13

Sorry-missed out the eat from your nn Blush

cheminotte · 02/03/2014 15:18

I've been a mostly omnibus listener for years but this tthread and podcasts means I know try and keep up over the course of the week so I can at least occasionally add a comment.

Shallishanti · 02/03/2014 19:10

hmmm secret engagement

GypsyFloss · 02/03/2014 19:13

Oh god I've just had my dinner and the sound of Titchy Nob and Hellin is bed is just too much. As for the secret engagement , well he wangled her around to his way of thinking fairly swiftly. Creepy tosser.

GypsyFloss · 02/03/2014 19:15

Creepy lying toerag tosser in fact.

Shallishanti · 02/03/2014 19:16

ahh- taking things slowly are we?
