New thread for the beginning of the pheasant season.

OP posts:

The whole Grey Gables/ Kathy saga has got completely boring and predictable. The moment Pat said "why don't you ring them now", I just knew she would be regretting it 5 minutes later.

Helen's outburst at Henry was very realistic. And Kirsty's snorting.

ppeatfruit · 06/11/2013 16:32

Errol Rob's coming across as a typical insensitive male Hellin's had a lucky escape IMO Grin

Why would one allow a friend to influence one's decision about a job fgs? she didn't ask her if she liked the set up and manager at the 'chain' hotel that Cathy was thinking about duh!

Lilymaid · 06/11/2013 16:32

I'm now thinking that there will be a shared deputy manager position - between Kathy and Lynda.

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 06/11/2013 16:48

Lily Ages ago (upthread or first thread) someone suggested that they could job share. Don't know if it was you? It does seem like a brilliant idea...

ppeatfruit · 06/11/2013 17:44

I think it was me! But I can foresee problems if that happened!

Lilymaid · 06/11/2013 18:27

It will be a great story line - Kathy pitched against Lynda! I'd love to know their Archers ages - should both be over 60 but TA has a way of stalling age until "Oim 92"

ppeatfruit · 06/11/2013 20:38

Yes Lilymaid i did wonder why Cathy didn't retire on her teachers' pension.

CuttedUpPear · 06/11/2013 21:00

Londonmother I just clicked on your link.

Kenton is bald

Life = ruined.

LondonMother · 06/11/2013 21:04

Sorry, Cutted! On the plus side, he's Clement Attlee's grandson.

Ppeatfruit, Kathy only taught for a few years. I doubt her teachers' pension would keep the wolf from the door.

Good episode tonight, I thought. I love Robert and I think he's right that his Lyndy would fret with the extra responsibility. Nice chat between Ed and Lynda too. And how lovely to hear Joe sounding more like himself!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2013 21:12

And how lovely to hear Joe sounding more like himself!

The old devil...who knew that large cheques could have such a restorative effect?

With a bit of help from Robert I seem to have got Lynda's position re the job about right Grin. Now hopefully she'll have time to research that disease and find that domestic dogs are really unlikely to be a problem before she single-handedly stops them all being walked on grazing land.

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 06/11/2013 21:21

ShockI hated Robert discouraging her from applying. Firstly because it was just another man telling the little woman she shouldn't worry her pretty little head. Secondly I didn't believe it. A few years ago the Snells were facing financial ruin. I have never understood how Lynda's receptionist job and a little B and B business could possibly make up the shortfall when he was made redundant. (He doesn't seem to do an awful lot of ?odd-job work now...) They must have had a huge income to buy Ambridge Hall - and then it disappeared. I'm certain that in reality character both she and Robert would have been far more gung-ho about a possible promotion.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2013 21:30

No, I don't think Robert was doing the 'little woman' thing (on Lynda? are you kidding?). He said she should do it if that's what she really wanted - but was that what was most important to her? I agree with him, she wants to do other things than be a wage slave.

LondonMother · 06/11/2013 21:36

Lynda's 66 and Robert is 70! It's wonderful that TA isn't ageist but how many 66-year-olds are looking for a big promotion? I agree with Robert too. Lynda needs time for all her other interests and the family.

TheSilveryPussycat · 06/11/2013 21:41

So both Snells should be drawing state pension then. And perhaps Robert has a good employer's pension.

Spot on Errol re Lynda! I am shocked that she's 66 though. knowing that, i absolutely agree that Robert was not trying to keep her in her "Little Woman" place. Lynda's reference to "The girls" was a bit sad though, can't imagine the awful Leonie gives her any thought from one day to the next unless she needs a bolthole.

ppeatfruit · 07/11/2013 09:11

Lynda and Robert may have a private income (but you're right sthing i remember them going on about their being poor). Who'd want a managers job like that at 66? not me that's for sure.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2013 09:40

They've got a big house but doesn't Lynda travel everywhere by bicycle, and I can't remember them going on holiday, they're probably relatively frugal spenders.

curlew · 07/11/2013 09:49

Linda took the job at Grey Gables when Robert lost his job as some sort of IT person. Robert also used to do carpentry and stuff for people- he started doing that when they were very short of money, and thought they might have to sell Ambridge hall. Not sure what happened to that......

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 07/11/2013 10:23

"Not sure what happened to that......"

What happened was that the SWs stopped doing their sums (imvho.)

Lets say Robert was earning £100k in today's money when they bought the Hall. Then he was made redundant. (And I think lost a company car? Hence the bike?) The part time reception post might pay - what - £15k? Very much doubt the B&B earns them more than another £10k a year. Carpentry - from what we've heard - lets say £10 /15k. And weren't the llamas supposed to bring some sort of income?

Vulgar economics? (I have never typed or written "k" anywhere, ever before...) They must have been quite drastically "reduced". (Though I had forgotten about pensions.)

ppeatfruit · 07/11/2013 11:22

Or the SWs just lost interest. Or they paid off the mortgage or........ !! After all we're not supposed to be interested in the hard up M.Classes now it's all W.C. misery ,homelessness etc.

LondonMother · 07/11/2013 12:15

Well, their financial crisis was a long, long time ago. It may have been so long ago that Robert was still paying child support to Bobo, his former wife. Obviously that would eventually have come to an end. He may now have come into various deferred pensions and they've had Lynda's salary. They never go on holiday, do they?

choccyp1g · 07/11/2013 13:44

I thought Robert was trying to dissuade her because he knew she stood no chance of getting it, and that she only wanted to do it on principle, so that as soon as Kathy said of course Lynda would be sure to beat her to it, that pride would be satisfied and she'd bow out.
Then she decided not to apply after a long walk with Scruff and a chat with Ed about dog poo.

ppeatfruit · 07/11/2013 15:52

Yes choccy IMO pride is a major part of Linda's personality; I liked her sensitivity over the dog poo situation with Ed jnr. a lot.

ppeatfruit · 07/11/2013 16:02

I just had a thought (I must get out more) are there any cats in Ambridge???
