New thread!

Perhaps Darrell could undertake a huge decade-long project transforming the interior of Grey Gables into something that would rival Grinling Gibbons and Chipperdale combined and this will secure the future of GG as a grade A tourist attraction. Just as long as another attack robs him of the power of speech first.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2013 11:08

yes, people in building trades usually learn to do other things, though generally not as skillfully as their main trade. However, when the number of new homes being built drops by, say, 50%, then half of them will be out of work, and wages will be driven down for the remainder.

If peope are not moving house much, the amount of refurb work drops. If BTL people stop buying old houses, they stop needing renovations, therefore no jobbing needed. All of those things have happened.

TheSilverySoothsayer · 28/09/2013 13:47

something, no you aren't alone in your thoughts re RW conspiracy. They have missed a good chance to show it how it is. Surely Darryll would have signed on with the hostel as his address and got JSA? It isn't clear if he has any money coming in. And they could have addressed one of my LW issues - eg he could have got sanctioned for being 5 min late to sign on.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2013 13:59

he was probably self-employed. He now has no family or rent. When would he start getting JSA?

PigletJohn · 28/09/2013 14:04

here we are

You can’t usually get contribution-based JSA if you’re self-employed. You must have paid enough Class 1 National insurance, and self-employed people pay Class 2 or 4. You could get income-based JSA, tax credits or Employment and Support Allowance instead

and

Your household income can affect how much income-based JSA you get. Income includes money from savings (if you have more than £6,000), pensions and earnings

so he would have to be recognised as no longer in the famaily household

As he is written as an inadequate weed I expect he finds it difficult to jump through the goverment's hoops.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2013 14:10

because

Also, to get income-based JSA you (and your partner if you have one):

must usually work less than 24 hours a week (on average)

so his working (recent ex) partner would be an excuse to push away the lazy, workshy, sponging benefit-scrounger.

I can't see on that website how long you have to wait to get income-based.

campion · 28/09/2013 14:30

Couple of things... how do the Grundys manage to keep Bartleby when they never have 2 ha'pennies to rub together? Ponies are expensive-they get ill, need vets, regular care etc etc.Barmy should be its name.

Also, why doesn't unrealistically well-spoken George call Ed Uncle Ed since he is?

Another thing... Darryl's situation flags up, to me, how easy it is to end up on the'wrong side of the tracks'.He's vulnerable, naive and, despite his track record, not streetwise. He's not a survivor and, without the support mechanisms many of us take for granted, he won't be able to easily get out of this mess.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2013 14:59

the Grundies have a field, and experience of handling livestock, so will not need the professional support that a ponygirl can afford. no doubt Joe at least used to look after farm horses in his younger days.

There is a lot of wastage in burst or spoiled bags of animal feed, and I daresay a few damaged sacks end up in their shed.

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2013 15:09

campionGeorge is William's biologically and obviously Emmurs they DO share him between them.

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2013 15:10

Some child actors don't do very good accents I suppose!

campion · 28/09/2013 15:25

Yes,I do know that ppeatfruit, but Ed is George's biological uncle on account of him being William's biological brother.

Therefore why not acknowledge the fact?

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2013 15:32

Yeah sorry! I haven't noticed what he calls him TBH.

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/09/2013 15:55

Did I hear Ed say he didn't want to see Oliver? I was wondering what him and Will think about it all - bearing in mind how much help Oliver and Caroline have given them over the years.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 28/09/2013 19:08

I noticed Ed's comment re Oliver, but did he actually say he didn't want to, or rather that he'd prefer not to just now (or words to that effect)

George calling Ed "Uncle Ed" would be kind of awkward, wouldn't it? His dad's partner is Nic - his mum's partner is Ed - that seems reasonable

(& calling your parent's partner "Auntie/Uncle" kind of harps back to the dark ages when unrelated adults had to be called that. The whole family seems to be OK with Ed being called Ed!)

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 28/09/2013 19:12

"just as soon not see him at the moment"

Somethingyesterday · 29/09/2013 08:56

"just as soon not see him at the moment"

Meaning: "I'm on my angry dad's side so my friend is now my enemy."?

Or "I'm slightly caught in the middle so things are going to be just a little awkward."?

A while ago I wondered why the SWs had never exploited the opposing loyalties of Caroline and Oliver to different Grundy brothers. If Oliver continues to be so incomprehensibly wet Caroline might have to LTB. So it would be Will and Ed who had to take sides. (Although that would be less interesting obviously....)

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 29/09/2013 10:32

caught in the middle, I thought, something - he didn't sound angry

Oh, I thought Eddie is genuinely seriously concerned - there was that bit of dialogue with Ed about how he's never thought of Joe as old before - I don't think Eddie could put that on

But it was great hearing how he perked up when Ed brought Bartleby round

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out

kiriwawa · 29/09/2013 17:28

Joe has form for being a bit of a hypochondriac but I do feel a bit sorry for him. I'm probably one of the few people who can't bear him and wish he'd shuffle off this mortal coil Blush

Gigondas · 29/09/2013 17:42

I am not that fussed if he goes either - he is a mardy fusspot that I don't warm to.

And I think Eddie is taking it seriously .

kiriwawa · 29/09/2013 18:01

Glad I'm not the only one Gig :) It feels like he's been 92 for the last 30 years!

Gigondas · 29/09/2013 18:07

I know. Which reminds me jack isn't actually dead yet ? I thought he was still in the elms .

JessieMcJessie · 30/09/2013 06:43

The Laurels, Gigondas, a rather different tree- based residential home. Grin

ppeatfruit · 30/09/2013 10:10

As I said upthread Jack the ACTOR luvvie is dead (and has been for quite a while now) but Ambridge's Jack is still alive and not kicking with Alzheimers, in as you say Jessie, the Laurels.

Yes about not being too bothered whether Joe KTB but I like the way he hearkens back to the old ways of farming which were more sensible like having clover growing to keep the cattle healthy rather than culling badgers.
