Yellow bathroom suite yay or nay?

Got a beautiful primrose yellow bathroom suite in great condition, the bath stays hot for hours as it's metal. Very solid stuff from the 60s/70s.

I'm updating the bathroom around it, but tradesman reckons the house won't sell as well unless I replace the suite with a modern white one.

Is he right? Is there really no place for a retro suite with buyers nowadays? I love it and am gutted we'll be leaving it behind at some point tbh.

When I bought my house and money was very tight, I just wanted a working bathroom in a useable size. I would no more have turned the place down because the toilet was yellow than I would have complained about the size of the windows. It was a house I loved and could afford.

I think some people are just a wee bit too fussy or privileged. Leave your lovely bathroom as is. If a buyer really can't live with the colour, then they can change it when they've bought the house for all the other great features that I'm sure it has.

It’s great. I agree with your comment about disliking houses that have been modernised and made bland inside. If it was a peach floral whirlpool I’d say get rid, but that’s an easy suite to style either in a cute retro way or go quite fresh with white tiles, panel, loo seat and pale yellow walls. Modern stuff falls apart so quickly whereas this may still be going strong in 20 years time.

diddl · 15/10/2025 10:14

For me it's the "two tone".

If it was all the original yellow I'd say leave it.

As it is I would think it would get ripped out.

Strangesally20 · 15/10/2025 10:14

I like it, but I hate the grey with it, I think if you chanced the tiles to night bright white, changed the handles and accessories to brass, and painted the front of the bath white, some plants in terracotta pots a nice contrasting towel it would be transformed.

MaJoady · 15/10/2025 10:28

Amazing that the man you're paying to do work wants you to pay to do more work...

Doesn't matter about the future owner. Some will like it, some won't. Same will apply if you change it to white, some people won't like the style you choose! Don't renovate for a future buyer imo

I would buy the house specifically for this bathroom! It would be a major plus point for me (I hate grey so would change that, but love the yellow suite). My sister is currently putting retro coloured bathrooms back into her house

All the yellow is original, not sure what you mean?

Interesting comments about the grey, I'm willing to look at white as an alternative.

Also tempted to look for a funky wallpaper for the wall opposite.

I love the yellow, but I’d have to decorate the rest of the bathroom to make it more luxurious, and ditch the grey.

PixieandMe · 15/10/2025 10:34

I absolutely love it and for me, it would be a bonus in any house I viewed to buy.

Maybe try it on the market and ask the estate agent for honest feedback on the bathroom suite? Then switch it for white if you don't find a buyer with good taste!

If you do get rid they sell for quite a bit

So you’d probably make more money selling the suite individually and replacing with a white one.

Starlight1984 · 15/10/2025 10:44

I would leave it. Honestly, ripping it out and replacing with a cheap and shit white bathroom suite is pointless as someone could want to rip that out anyway.

At least the yellow gives character and personality!

I’d go tropical and put in a wallpaper like this on one wall (pick the one with a bit of pale yellow in the leaves):

Put in a dark green tiled floor/walls (fired earth or mandarin stone). Black or dark brown toilet seat. Brass or black sanitary wear, lighting and towel rail. Lots of plants in basket containers (some hanging). A huge mirror. Towels in pale yellow and dark green.
It’ll look fab.

I wouldn’t bother redoing the bathroom unless you are 100% sure you can recoup the cost when selling. My Db put a whole new bathroom in his house to sell, a week after selling he drove past to see the whole new bathroom in the skip…what a waste!

ginasevern · 15/10/2025 11:06

I had a primrose bathroom suite in my first home (1977). I loved it. It was so bright and cheerful especially when the sun shone through the window. The bathroom was pretty big so maybe that helped. I still think of it now and how lovely it was.

WildCherryBlossom · 15/10/2025 11:20

Keep it! Someone might love it and if they don’t they can change it. If you are going on the market early Spring keep a vase full of fresh daffodils in there for viewings. Celebrate the yellow!

user927464 · 15/10/2025 11:23

I would retain it but definitely not with grey since that will look very early 90s. I'd use white tiles and then find a pretty wallpaper which is white and yellow.

That it would look better all the same yellow as it was originally.

Unless of course the bath panel & toilet seat & lid have always been a different colour.

Oh I see what you mean. They were never yellow, they were the same colour as the wood on the wall.

Don't listen to the tradesman, he's trying to sell you a new bath. Keep the one you like. When you move out you can replace the bath if you believe it is stopping the house selling.

AtIusvue · 15/10/2025 12:34

Agree with another poster.

Take it out, put it in storage before use in your next home. Put a cheap white suite in this house.

I love the lemon suite!

bollockyness · 15/10/2025 12:40

Refurb the bathroom as planned and take it with you. If it brings joy to your life, keep it in your life

Oh right.

Well I think if you're living there a bit longer I wouldn't take it all out.

If I loved the house & the bathroom was functional it wouldn't stop me buying.

We lived with an avocado suite for longer than we should have.

I mean bath, separate shower basin, 2 sinks & a bidet!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/10/2025 12:43

I had a grey suite in my previous house which wasn't too offensive, but the estate agent said it wasn't a deal breaker but if the buyer had a choice between two houses they would probably go for the white suite, and it didn't give them an excuse to reduce the price.
