Yellow bathroom suite yay or nay?

Got a beautiful primrose yellow bathroom suite in great condition, the bath stays hot for hours as it's metal. Very solid stuff from the 60s/70s.

I'm updating the bathroom around it, but tradesman reckons the house won't sell as well unless I replace the suite with a modern white one.

Is he right? Is there really no place for a retro suite with buyers nowadays? I love it and am gutted we'll be leaving it behind at some point tbh.

I wouldn't buy a home with a coloured bathroom suite of any colour.

mynameiscalypso · 14/10/2025 21:23

I like the yellow but I’m not a fan of the grey at all - but that may be because we had a grey bathroom in our previous flat and it was really dark and dingy.

It's difficult to decorate around. Grey could work well with dark wood - maybe a wooden toilet seat? But to be honest, I'd prefer it to be 'kitsch'ed to hell! Big, blousey, floral wallpaper, a knitted loo roll cover, bright striped shower curtain, fake flowers - make it POP!!!

I was looking for a neutral accent colour (that I could easily find things in!) and I thought the brown looked very dated. What would you suggest as an alternative @mynameiscalypso ?

How old is the house ?

Personally I would keep it - providing it is in a good condition and it does seem to be.

If anything, I would be finding a toilet seat with yellow in it i.e. yellow rubber ducks or flowers or something.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/10/2025 21:50

meant to say, I would happily buy the house with that bathroom.

vetprob · 14/10/2025 21:53

I'm thinking now I should try and pretty it up a bit.

Not sure DP would be up for that though!

Pic!

I'm going to be leaving soon but I've adored this for nearly 10 years and I just know someone else will too 😭

I'm getting rid of the wood so it's yellow and grey. (Ignore the tape on the tiles I'm getting it re-done but very regretfully having to replace the chicken tiles)

Primrose yellow
One of many colours that I've saw whilst in a connected trade/supplier.

It's quite anice pale yellow. But the decor needs to be changed.

Any suggestions? What would you do?

Calculate the cost of a new bathroom. Will doing the work increase the value of your house by several thousand more than the cost of doing it? Probably not. If you put in a new one, chances are the buyers will want to change it anyway. Same goes for kitchens. You just price the house slightly higher to start with and then negotiate on price. Or get the estate agent to negotiate for you - it's what you are paying them for.

The bathroom is a period feature, so leave it. Just make sure it is squeaky clean and absolutely sparkling.

I predict that retro bathrooms will be back in fashion in the not too distant future.

Get rid of the brown. Change to modern white paint with white tiles and change the sink/tub faucets and other chrome for new and modern.

BeMintFatball · 14/10/2025 22:43

I grew up in a new build 1967 3 bed semi.

To be in keeping with the time. The toilet seat should be black. The wall tiles should be plain black imperial 6 inch square.

The house I grew up in pink bathroom suite, black toilet seat grey tiled walls.

Towelling curtains for the window. I remember we had penguins on a white/white background

longtompot · 14/10/2025 22:53

@vetprob I love your bathroom suite! So much cheerier than plain old boring white. We had a really lovely blue green in our old home, which was a rented place and the landlord had it all ripped out after we moved out. I went for white walls, stripped wood and painted the floorboards white and we painted the wall opposite the bath a dark blue. I am really tempted to have another put in here when we do our bathrooms up. Maybe even a yellow one! It would match my front door 💛
I would go for clean white seat and tiles with the yellow, and then maybe a patterned flooring, like Moroccan tiles type pattern?
I'd either clean up the taps and fittings or replace them. Some fresh plants and a few pictures on the walls would look nice too.
As you are planning on selling anyway, why spend your money on a new suite that is likely to be replaced anyway, money you can spend on your new place should you need to.
Or, you could replace it with a a white suite and use the yellow suite in your new place...

I'd go for dark blue - it'd look awesome with the yellow

Keep it. Rather than trying to go retro I would change to white tiles, brighten it up and try go more modern, soft green towels and mat, add a nice green plant, modern picture etc. Definitely not grey. Take a look online ' ideas to modernise a yellow bathroom suite '

Leave it as is. There’s nothing worse than a bathroom which has been done on a budget for a house sale and the chances are a buyer will just rip it out anyway.
A decent bathroom will cost £10k, you’re not going to lose over £10k by not replacing it so save the hassle
