Yellow bathroom suite yay or nay?

Got a beautiful primrose yellow bathroom suite in great condition, the bath stays hot for hours as it's metal. Very solid stuff from the 60s/70s.

I'm updating the bathroom around it, but tradesman reckons the house won't sell as well unless I replace the suite with a modern white one.

Is he right? Is there really no place for a retro suite with buyers nowadays? I love it and am gutted we'll be leaving it behind at some point tbh.

Leave it! I had a vintage yellow bathroom suite in my first flat. It was so cheerful. I miss it.

dontcomeatme · 14/10/2025 19:27

Can't really decide without a photo, could be awful yellow or lovely yellow 🤷🏻‍♀️
Personally I love retro look but we were advised to go as white and plain as possible before our property sale x

evilharpy · 14/10/2025 19:29

We need a photo!

Depends how long you plan to stay I suppose. If you're staying for 10 years you might as well enjoy the bathroom you like.

I would love a bright, cheerful yellow bathroom with lots of plants.

TeenLifeMum · 14/10/2025 19:30

Are you doing the house up to sell or making it your home?

vetprob · 14/10/2025 19:44

Pic!

I'm going to be leaving soon but I've adored this for nearly 10 years and I just know someone else will too 😭

I'm getting rid of the wood so it's yellow and grey. (Ignore the tape on the tiles I'm getting it re-done but very regretfully having to replace the chicken tiles)

If you’re selling soon then a new white one.

If you’re selling soon then a new white one.

Really?

Surely there is space in the market for non white?

Once it's gone it's gone forever.

I don't know about others but I really dislike seeing a lovely old home on rightmove to then look at the internal shots to find it's all been made open plan and modern inside.

I don't want to buy a house like that personally. I can't be the only one!

I wouldn't waste a load of money redoing a serviceable bathroom unless I'd already thrown loads of money tarting up the rest of the house to the nth degree. Which I wouldn't do to sell anyway. Put it like this, if a house was right for me a yellow batroom wouldn't put me off. (I mean it's not for me, and eventually having to redo a bathroom is a hassle yes, but the upside is that when the yellow stuff reached the end of its service life, I'd get my idea of a bathroom, and not my vendor's builder's.

friskybivalves · 14/10/2025 19:52

I love it but even if I didn’t I wouldn’t let it put me off buying a house that I might be going to change anyway - eg with a walk in shower or P-shaped bath.

LibertyLily · 14/10/2025 19:55

A new white suite if you're selling imminently.

My parents had a suite the same as that and swapped it out for a burgundy one in the 1980s 😂

In 2014 we bought a house with a primrose downstairs loo/basin - it was really hard to keep looking clean and we removed it as part of the renovations.

It didn't put us off buying the house, but it was a real project with loads of Arts & Crafts original features which more than made up for it.

We just ripped out a kitchen full of floor-to-ceiling grey 'chick' tiles which I couldn't wait to see the back of, but I guess they're seen as cool, mid-century style by those younger than me (mid 50s) lol!

SendTheNextOneIn · 14/10/2025 19:55

We used to have those exact tiles in our downstairs toilet at my parents house! I loved finding all the animals in them Grin

I’d love a yellow bathroom, it wouldn’t put me off a house at all. I remember my grandparents had an awful dark brown bathroom suite, it was something else!

vetprob · 14/10/2025 19:57

@SendTheNextOneIn dark brown is a whole nother proposition 😂

Primrose yellow is my favourite of that era's bathrooms. I'd buy it 😂

The toilet seat is a bit dark, but I am not sure what the alternative would be if you can't find a yellow one.

SleepingisanArt · 14/10/2025 20:11

Lol that looks just like the Sindy bathroom set I had in the 1970s! If you love it so much have it removed and stored to install in your new house. A buyer will probably see the non- white suite and reduce their offer by the price of a new bathroom....

vetprob · 14/10/2025 20:12

THANK YOU @MelOfTheRoses I replaced the old brown wooden seat with grey as it seems the best colour to complement yellow and I doubt I'll find a yellow seat to match.

That is such a crazy but brilliant idea 😆

Kind of depends in your target market. FTB won't really care (well they might initially) and might then get to appreciate the quality (get your EA to big up the advantages of a vintage bathroom). Older buyers may also appreciate it.
I've heard of other buyers that will replace the bathroom immediately because they want a new one, no matter whether it's new or old.
I lived with a Sunrise orange bathroom for four years. It was not aesthetically pleasing but it was a super comfy bath. I've now had a p-shaped bathroom for 10 years and had precisely three baths in it. Just too big.

abracadabra1980 · 14/10/2025 20:22

I’m probably older than you OP and I’ve seen most things come round full circle. Yes, retro is very ‘in’ at the moment BUT, to sell your house with wider appeal, I’d remove it and replace with a white neutral suite, and sell it on Facebook marketplace. It’s only a certain age group that will be into that type of thing.

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 14/10/2025 20:24

I think it's lovely but I'd highlight it with bright white tiles and accessories.

Tootsiroll · 14/10/2025 20:35

OMG I love the retro vibe and I'd wish I had something like that in my house. My future home has lots of the older touches still in place from the floor plan with seperate front and back rooms to the fire place and picture rails. I really don't like the modern asthetic but understand my taste isn't for everyone.

anyolddinosaur · 14/10/2025 20:41

I'd replace the dark colours with paler.

It's not a hideous yellow and I'd rather do a replacement myself than have the seller's choice.

Onefortheroad25 · 14/10/2025 20:56

I love it! Quite envious! I’d leave it. Unless you’re going to reinstall it in your next house then why go the bother & expense? If someone really wants to buy your property then a bathroom suite wouldn’t really put them off completely.
In the 80’s my best friends house had a green bathroom & a pink bathroom. So nice!

InMyShowgirlEra · 14/10/2025 21:00

I love it. White is so boring.

SwarmsofLadybirds · 14/10/2025 21:11

Yikes, not for me at all. Having said that it wouldn't necessarily put me off a house, but I'd definitely be factoring in the cost of replacing it.

Can you get a white wooden one and prime it (zinser spray or similar) then use colour match paint.
I think this could look AMAZING with a bold wallpaper.
