Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

Knock on his door, say “I really need all the space in my skip for our work, so will you please stop putting your stuff in it? I can’t afford a second skip if this one gets overfilled”

You know, use your words!

He thinks it’s ok to use your skip, it’s ok to ask him not to.

Reporting him to the police is ridiculous.

Talk to him.

And if he does it again, deploy uncle.

This. And do it NOW.
Most people don't appreciate how expensive a skip is

Not that it justifies his actions at all, but I also think most people don't appreciate that a skip - whilst large - is not infinite.

It's a bit like when people dream of winning a million pounds and imagine buying a great big country mansion, houses for all their family, several flash cars, multiple exotic holidays and never having to work again.

Yes, it's a lot of money; but it won't buy you everything!

Any update @cannehelpit ?

FrangipaneMincies · 02/06/2025 07:52

OP hasn't "invited" anything. She's entitled to hire a skip outside her home for herself to use, just like hiring a car to have outside to use. Other people should not assume they are also entitled to it!! The neighbour is a CF who needs to retrieve his stuff or face possible consequences.

Keep us updated OP

Is that really how the spiteful the world is now what difference does it make if i had a skip i really could not care less who put what in it its all going to the same place and I definitely wouldn't be making posts on the internet calling him out for it or even consider taking it out and putting it in his garden out of nothing but spite. He obviously doesn't need a full skip and i would assume he wouldn't think anybody would be in the slightest bit bothered if he throws a few bits in it or not if i saw a skip thats what id think. Would you be bothered if someone saw something in it they wanted and took it considering its going to the tip anyway and there would be less going in landfill. I Just think its mind blowing someone is actually complaining about a bloke using a skip

Wow, i see you have a new name just for this......
well anyway. Point one is that skip rental is not cheap, no one does it for amusement. People NEED the space in the skip to put into it whatever they rented it for and not for others to get a free ride. Secondly skip companies often have rules about what can be put in skips and if the wrong things go in, they will either charge more ot insist that the skip is sorted snd the banned items are removed.
The last time I had a skip, when all my stuff was in, I called around my neighbours and offered them the spare space but I wouldn't have taken kindly to finding other peoplescwaste just dumped in the skip that I had oaid for.....but if you ever have one, give uscall a shout and we'll be happy to fill it for you. You won't mind of course!

Only certain things are allowed in skips. If wrong stuff is put in them, the skip company can refuse to collect them, then a fee around £150- 200 can be charged for every extra day until the rubbish is removed. It is totally mad, l know but that's the rules..

But creating a new user name (or account?) and writing a whole rant is so chill & kind? 😂What a weird thing to do and weird attitude, that you think its ok for someone to find a company, arrange to use their service, pay a good chunk of money for this service and then someone else thinks can just help themselves if anything its an example of how selfish, rude and entitled the world is now!

Selfish and entitled. Pretty much everything that's wrong with this country today.

Your argument is bonkers....it's like ordering a taxi and someone just jumping in and taking up a space that someone in you family needed to occupy... Would you be happy about that?

Hiring a skip costs hundreds of pounds, you order the size of skip to match the job you are doing as size increases costs. I'd be pretty miffed if a neighbour chucked a load of waste in and it meant I could put my waste in that I had budgeted for!
Your argument is crazy

Hey if you're my neighbour, as you already have bins, I don't need to get my own - I'll be just using yours, all goes to the same place, what does it matter. Right?

Skips are very expensive!
The one time we ordered a skip before an international house move ( back to the UK ) the only place it could be safely placed was in the road to the rear of our house where we did have a gate and access .
Each day leading up to our house move we put things in .
The next day there would be things added and things removed!
I never knew who was doing what 🤪 and no CCTV in that rear access street , neighbours saw nothing .
I did take anything decent to charity shops and gave away many items that friends could use so I wasn’t being wasteful at all

I've got a skip on my drive right now which I paid £195 for. I need to put certain bulky items in but they aren't in yet because I need help lifting them - relatives are coming this weekend for that purpose. I would be furious if in the meantime someone decided to dump their rubbish in it - the skip that I paid for.

Why is it spiteful to not want to pay for a lazy, cheeky, entitled neighbour's rubbish so that I can't even fit my own stuff in.

'Would you be bothered if someone saw something in it they wanted and took it considering its going to the tip anyway'

That's illegal.

Some people use the skip to hold things out of the way when theres no storage space for that is going to be reused, scrapped (for money) or resold etc... its private property so no different to seeing a bike in someones garden and thinking 'ooo, free bike' and taking it. Its theft, you can not 'assume' its just free to take.

You could ASK the owner if its rubbish and if they would mind if you take it if it is but you cannot take it from private property without asking.
