Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

Check you legal rights in your area as it can be classified as fly tipping, it can also be classified as theft and trespass. So best to check which and then quote the laws saying if not removed you will prosecute with the video evidence.

I had a neighbour many moons ago filling my bin up with their rubbish to the point of not being able to close the lid. Council told me it is fly tipping and trespass and to inform them they can be liable.

Knock at his door and tell him to stop and if he does not that you will report him to the police the cheeky get!

Namechanger2578 · 23/05/2025 19:53

@cannehelpit what happened in the end? Did you take his stuff back and tell him you'd seen him do it?

CalmBalonz · 23/05/2025 19:56

He is only asking for advice.

Let your uncle take it back and post a letter telling him that any further use of the skip will be considered fly tipping and the camera footage will be submitted to authorities

@GoingToGraceland You must live in a nice area. We once lived in a not so desirable area, where it was impossible to FILL a skip - people kept taking stuff out!

Ha! I think our area is somewhere in-between. Here you just stick anything you want to get rid of by the front gate with a note taped to it: "Free - help yourself!", perhaps with a note to say (if it's an old TV, for example) that it's working, and it's gone within a couple of hours. I've never actually seen it go, but we've got rid of everything from electrical stuff to fairly bulky items of furniture that way.

It's been a long time since someone called me that - if ever! I was just fielding for guidance and experience. i certainly will be doing something, and will update!

I haven't heard in forever either. I can tell by your post that you just cat get your head round the entitlement. If you have a bolshy uncle, please utilise him and ask him if he would mind being my bolshy uncle too. We all need one of those in our lives. Please do update us.

TBH, this was an entirely expected event. Unlocked Skip with no cover. Come on, someone will chance it
Not saying neighbour is right, but well folk will be chancers. And you practically invited it
What are you going to do?

I don't think you 'invite' it by having a skip outside your house that you've obviously paid for!

Life doesn't work like that...

That’s exactly how life works. Leave a skip unlocked, someone will
chance it
I am surprised folk don’t anticipate unlocked skip=open invitation. wahey! Tip it in
So yes,it’s an invitation, it is simply a skip sat there. Folk will oblige

Ramblethroughthebrambles · 23/05/2025 21:03

He seems to be doing this openly - not sneaking across? If so, there's a tiny chance, particularly if he's young, that he is not clear how skip hire works. Therefore I'd be assertive but, in the interests of good future relations, I wouldn't go in all guns blazing. Just go and tell him it's a private skip, paid for by you and that you need it all so he will need to remove all his stuff in the next hour. If he doesn't get on board straight away and apologize or denies it you mention video / police / uncle being part of local crime family / all of these.

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 23/05/2025 21:16

I’d write a letter explain he needs to take his stuff back by x date or it will be a police matter. If he doesn’t do it dump it back on his drive.

ImGoneUnderground · 23/05/2025 21:20

user1471505356 · 22/05/2025 07:55

This is normal use of a neighbour's skip.

Are you, perhaps, the neighbour??🤔

PBJsandwich123 · 23/05/2025 21:21

BangersAndGnash · 22/05/2025 08:08

Knock on his door, say “I really need all the space in my skip for our work, so will you please stop putting your stuff in it? I can’t afford a second skip if this one gets overfilled”

You know, use your words!

He thinks it’s ok to use your skip, it’s ok to ask him not to.

Reporting him to the police is ridiculous.

Talk to him.

And if he does it again, deploy uncle.

It's theft and flytipping - why shouldn't she report it to the police??

If you're a CFer yes!

FinneganFois · 23/05/2025 21:25

I would have paid him for the folding table if it was still useable. I recently bought one from Ikea but had to return it, as it had a huge crack in it ! (Self assembly)
Think i'd been given another customer's return.

LlamaDrama20 · 23/05/2025 21:29

This is why I like living in my cul-de-sac.
When I neighbour gets a skip they send a message to the street WhatsApp chat saying 'I'm going to be filling it this week, so don't put anything in it until I say' then another saying 'right, if anyone wants to add anything bring it over in the next 48 hours' then there ends up being a street party with people laughing and chatting about their old junk!

OhcantthInkofaname · 23/05/2025 21:35

How about you take your uncle up on his offer to take it back AND do a non emergency report to the police.

Zone2NorthLondon · 23/05/2025 21:40

BustingBaoBun · 23/05/2025 21:24

If you're a CFer yes!

It’s how life works when you leave an open skip. Wholly foreseeable event
Sensible would be to get a cover. If op had taken simple precautions no one could use her skip

BustingBaoBun · 23/05/2025 21:55

Well.... I would never dream of dumping my rubbish in a neighbours skip but hey ho

Harmonypus · 23/05/2025 21:59

This is why when I have a skip, I make sure I've got everything ready to go into it. I order the skip to arrive one day and for it to be collected the next.
It's amazing how many of the neighbours ask a week or two later whether they saw a skip outside my house last week. Some have even admitted that they planned to sort out their rubbish at the weekend with the intention of adding it to my stuff in the skip.
I just assume that everyone is a cf, and don't give them the opportunity to take advantage!

Pessismistic · 23/05/2025 22:01

Just knock on his door say the skip is all his as your not going to be paying for it and if you have paid tell him he puts another thing in it you will put it on his front and if he says that’s fly tipping tell him you have all the evidence to prove it’s his own shit. honestly don’t let him get away with it skips are not cheap get uncle round to return said goods to him. Let him pay for his own skip. Cheeky cunt.

Exactly! People see a skip, they’re plotting how to heef stuff into it. You need to anticipate this and don’t give any opportunity to dump stuff in your skip

I am not sure how you do that if you need a skip weeks when you are having a major refurbishment

THE POLICE?! Jesus.
