Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

I am enjoying this thread, even if it is a bit bonkers!

One conclusion I have drawn is... there are a few posters on here who have obviously dumped rubbish in a neighbour's skip and are trying to justify it!

So true 😆👌so many entitled knobheads out there

kkloo · 23/05/2025 18:13

Maybe he's trying to fill it because he's sick of looking at it and wants it filled up so it's collected, how long have you had this skip for? 😂

I think if you leave it on his front garden you can be done for fly topping. I worked for the council and one householder had left a bag on top of bin loader put it on ground next to bin. Householder complained flytipped on their property. Council agreed.

I’d pop around /send bolshy uncle write a letter and say video evidence will be reporting you for flytipping unless removed by x.

But surely on that basis, if the skip is on her property, then the neighbour is fly tipping as the OP has hired a skip to legally remove her waste and he has availed himself of it to avoid disposal costs. She is merely returning it to him.

Personally I would put a note through his letterbox telling him he has 24hrs to take back ownership of the items he has flytipped on her property or she will report him for flytipping. Also advise she has proof via the video camera.

I wouldn't offer to let it stay int he skip if he pays as she needs the skip space herself and it will only encourage him to do it again.

Lilywc · 23/05/2025 18:15

Yeah take it back to his & dump it outside his house! Keep whatever pictures you have as proof of him & his crap x

He's silly enough to do it on camera and rude enough to not ask. Either report it to the police you've got proof and its fly tipping. Or if you cant be bothered with that take your uncle up on his suggestion.

oldmoaner · 23/05/2025 18:20

I would go and ask him to remove his stuff from your skip or pay 50% of the cost, but if you would fill it with your own stuff tell him you have him on camera and he has to remove it it's for your stuff nobody else's.

vickylou78 · 23/05/2025 18:21

Send him a letter and tell him to remove it or you will return the property to his front garden. Or send a note saying the same.

If he doesn't remove it by stated date - remove it and place carefully in his front garden/drive.
Record all of the letters and footage/screenshots etc.

anotherdayinparadiseagain · 23/05/2025 18:25

We live in a very naice area, last time we had a skip (were redoing the kitchen) it was mostly empty on a daily basis! To be fair most of the scrap men knocked the door and asked if they could take it, but there were a few that didn’t, I wasn’t arsed, but I would be pissed if neighbours just started putting stuff in without asking

Motheroffive999 · 23/05/2025 18:32

Put it on his doorstep, how rude

may2025 · 23/05/2025 18:35

Im just really confused why people think the police need know ! What do you think they can actually do about it

tommyhoundmum · 23/05/2025 18:39

There is noone to whom you can report it.
Get a tarpaulin and fasten it over the top having put back in his garden all the things he's dumped. Cheeky sod.

GiveDogBone · 23/05/2025 18:43

What’s done is done, but would certainly knock on the door and let him know he’s been caught on camera. Alternatively, tell him he’s perfectly welcome to contribute to the cost.

SoManyDandelions · 23/05/2025 18:46

I'm the least confrontational person ever, but I'd have no problem at all going to knock on his door and explaining that I need the space in my skip, so could he please come and remove his tables, metal poles etc.

I hope you get it sorted OP.

comingintomyown · 23/05/2025 18:46

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 22/05/2025 08:57

You could set up the folding table on his drive, with the other items arranged artistically round / on it. I’d love to see the look on his face when he gets home and sees it!

😂

FeetLikeFlippers · 23/05/2025 18:55

He’s a CF of the highest order and is also breaking the law since dumping stuff in someone else’s skip without their permission is legally classed as fly tipping and therefore illegal. It would be perfectly reasonable for you to tell him to stop fly tipping on your property and to take back what he’s already dumped there because you’re not prepared to be legally responsible for somebody else’s waste.

Let your uncle do it!! That's what I did, dumped it back on the offender's front yard. You have proof it's him, he has NO defence.

This is normal use of a neighbour's skip.

Absolutely not, unless you have asked permission or are paying part of the fee. Do you know how expensive skips are nowadays, and how picky they are about what can be put in them?

Pinkdhalia · 23/05/2025 19:03

At night take the items out of the skip and put them in that neighbours garden! He can't say anything it's his stuff dumped in your paid for skip!
put a copy of the photo from you camera in his letterbox no explanation needed!

Say what? No it isn’t!

Issy422 · 23/05/2025 19:13

Definitely fly tipping for the neighbour to do that. Give him a deadline to remove it and, if he doesn't, report to your council with the evidence and they'll deal with it.

One of my neighbours once put a huge 4 seater sofa on top of my skip...brazen in daylight...we put it back in their front garden...they were renting and moving out...they were all smiley and nice when we explained it was too big for any skip...then the garage up the road put the entire interior of a toyota corolla in the next skip...dash..seats , trim etc...we took it back as they had the shell of the car on driveway, next day it was all back so we returned it again...this went on for about 5 times and then our skip got taken away...minus the car bits.

That's even more disgraceful if it's a business doing it repeatedly.

I'd be very inclined to leave a lot of bad reviews for them online - saying that you don't know how good they actually are at mending cars, but you've observed them fly tipping on numerous occasions; so a big warning to customers that any waste that the garage gets rid of on their behalf could potentially land them with a hefty bill and time in court if any of their former property can be identified as theirs.

'My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!'.. 😏
First and I probably would have already done this, I would put a short but to the point note through the neighbour's door telling him to both cease putting any more stuff in YOUR skip which YOU pay for and to come and retrieve what he can that he has already put in there...
If you get a negative response I would most DEFINITELY get my Uncle around to your house ASAP!!! 😡

Indeed. Man puts items in a skip, log it with 101!! take pics! chuck his item in his garden! The cf! It's discusting Confused

Talk to him and tell him to desist.

My neighbours filled my household rubbish bin, after I put it out for collecting. I went out to put one last bag of rubbish in and found it full. I looked on my camera and lo and behold, it was my next door neighbour. I thought CF but I let it go. I’d be interested to see what anyone else thinks about this?

As for the skip. Definitely tell him to remove his stuff, as you need the space that YOU HAVE PAID FOR.

We have had this happen it’s very annoying .
I had a fairly good idea who it was and for the first few times I let it go ..then we had a missed refuse collection .
Our council will return to empty missed bins but sometimes not for a few days so our own bin was absolutely full by the time it was eventually emptied.
We then put a note on our bins informing anyone that our bin 🚮 was for our own household only .

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 23/05/2025 19:25

I don't think most people get too bothered if drunk passers-by stuff the leftovers from their kebab and chips down in the corner of their skip as they stagger home; but people spotting your skip beforehand and deliberately deciding and planning to steal a quarter or more of the skip that you have paid for, by tipping their own big, bulky rubbish, is reprehensible.
