Gorgeous 1930s detached house, needs alot of modernising, huge garden, big drive and garage. It's on a main road into town but all the houses on this road are the same and just so lovely to look at.
We are not on the market yet but plan to get the same estate agents to list us asap. We need to move, we've outgrew this house in the last two years.
They want £450k. It was reduced in October.
Feedback has been the main road putting people off and also the work that will need doing.
How can we up our chances ?
We can probably go upto £430k but that would be the maximum.

We have gone for a period house although it has been updated quite nicely. Not fully to my taste but we can change some things when we move in. We were looking for a house that didn’t need a lot of work. We are in the outer boroughs of London so the market and prices are very different to where you are. There are not many new builds here and most are period homes which is the preferred type of house here. Ours is larger than yours but only because the loft has been done (without the loft it would have been the same size). But being in London, our garden is smaller although still a great size and the driveway only fits two cars. It’s also a semi and not detached. Considering it’s London, we are quite pleased with the space and garden we are getting and there is room for extending more if we want to. Prices are massively different though, you can’t really compare 😬

I was surprised to see so many new builds in your area. Not many of the ones I saw for sale are actually period homes. Are new builds the norm there? I think you are quite right to prefer a period home, there is just something them that screams home.

It sounds lovely. Great you have a decent garden too.
I was actually watching location location this morning and I was so shocked how high house prices are in London (this was north London) I knew they were high, but in 2018 a 3 bed house with a garden they wanted £850k for, gobsmacked ! Imagine what it would be now.

Yes in the last 6 years two estates have gone up basically next door to each other, and another one just up the road is starting soon, 350 houses ! It was all fields before.
The period houses are along the roads into town and the side streets actually in town.

Just be absolutely sure you're ok living on a busy road OP. I thought I was....until I moved on to one. Now I hate it and can't wait to move on. The noise and pollution bother me far more than I thought it would.

Hi, sorry to hear this. Are you set back from the road ?

Yes house prices are crazy here compared to other places, but we love our life in London 😀

Now all fingers are crossed for everything to go well for you and for us, keep us posted. And I’d also love to see what changes you make to your house!

i bet that there’s not even been an enquiry call about the property op let alone a viewing and certainly not another offer.

i honestly don’t think I could buy anywhere that had been on the market for 18 months and zero offers

@skidamarinkadinka how is it going with your sale?

LoveWine123 · 04/07/2025 16:02

@skidamarinkadinka I was also thinking about you the other day. I hope everything’s going well. We moved this week and we are so excited to finally be in the new house. Looking forward to hearing how things are working out for you.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 04/07/2025 22:48

@skidamarinkadinka

i was hoping it was an update by you!!

How are things going??

skidamarinkadinka · 31/10/2025 06:21

So we got the keys yesterday ! 🗝️
It’s taken 7 months of constant calls/emails/anxiety/stress but we got there eventually with a few weeks left until our mortgage offer ran out 😬

Thank you ! I went and got the keys and walked straight up there with the kids, literally bouncing !
It needs a rewire so we won’t be moving in until December, but it gives us time to rip the carpets up etc, strip off all the wallpaper 😬 I guess this is where the real fun starts now lol

Congratulations! Does that mean we can see the link now? 👀

DreamOfTheRarebitFiend · 31/10/2025 12:47

Congrats, OP! I'm so happy you've got your dream home. And yes please, do share the link, or at least photos -- we'd love to see!

skidamarinkadinka · 31/10/2025 12:59

Here’s some pics, needs alot of modernising but I love the original features and want to keep them, it has original terrazzo flooring in the hallway which I especially love

Oh, gorgeous! 😍 It has a really lovely feel to it. So glad to hear you'll be keeping the original features -- I hate it when people modernise old houses to such an extent that there's no period detail left. (And what a lovely big garden!)

HallidayJones6779 · 31/10/2025 13:22

I love it!

canyon2000 · 31/10/2025 13:37

Congratulations! My brother had the same electric blue with diagonal stripes duvet cover/curtains when he was a teenager. He is now 54! Enjoy making it your home.

skidamarinkadinka · 31/10/2025 14:33

Thank you all. Living in this kind of house is just a dream for me

What a lovely happy update OP, it’s so nice when people actually update threads instead of leaving everyone wondering what happened next.
I hope you enjoy many happy years in your new home.

IAmKerplunk · 31/10/2025 16:00

Absolutely beautiful OP! Very happy for you. Hope you have many years of happiness there and that you are in by Christmas 😀 How excited are your dc?

SpringIsSpringing25 · 31/10/2025 18:21

@canyon2000 I love it!!

more photos please!

I'm not sure I'd change that much, but those dark 'batons'(??) on the ceiling would be painted white immediately 🤣🤣

very 🤢🤢 but excited for you!!
