I only have space for one. Have had neither previously. What would you choose? X

You expect too much. Dishwashers don’t get hot enough to sterilise anything.

I thought dishwashers were more hygienic because they use hotter water than most people can tolerate when handwashing.

Dishwasher but I'd get a combination washer/dryer when you come to replace your washing machine. I

^

Do the combination ones actually work? I've used 2 and neither did

Seems to depend on the make. Mine (built in to a rented house) is pretty bad. I don’t use the dryer function.

Tumble dryer . We have both but if the dishwasher needed replacing we’d research the best one , look at a few etc if the tumble dryer broke it would be replaced by the end of the week .

Yes, they are hotter, but they do not sterilise. They sanitise.

Dishwasher and a heated airer - read recently that the best ones dry in the same time as a tumble dryer, but much more energy efficient and much cheaper to run. And you can pack away when you don’t need it.

Thepossibility · 29/10/2024 20:35

I'd say tumble dryer, I can wash dishes by hand easily but drying loads of sheets and towels easily is nearly impossible without my tumble dryer.

PoppysAunt · 29/10/2024 20:39

Tumble dryer. They're efficient to run nowadays, and absolutely invaluable. I've had tumble dryers for over 30 years, and never had clothes shrink. You have to check the settings.
Modern ones are moisture sensitive and very eco friendly.

FantaIsFine · 29/10/2024 20:41

Vote dishwasher

Although I have both and would hate to be without either and I'm only a household of one. I also use my dryer in the summer, please don't judge me
Currently NOT enjoying washing up in bathroom basin while house works are being done

And as PP points out a dryer can go ANYWHERE there's power

How about a dryer instead of wm and put clothes in the dw? [Obviously kidding. Although there existed a thread at some point about someone putting their LOO BRUSH in their dishwasher. Bleurgh]

Rainbowdottie · 29/10/2024 20:44

Tumble dryer for me. I have both but I'd choose my dryer everytime.
My children are fully grown adult men but it was my MIL who told me I needed a tumble dryer all those years ago, when my second was born. She had one,and I didn't know anyone else who had one. My only experience of them was using them at the launderette.

I didn't think I'd ever use it but in 25 years of having one, I feel lost without it. I don't put everything in it...but it's invaluable for coats, pants, socks, pj's, dressing gowns, bedding and towels alone. Imo I can always wash up and have it all put away but washing can and does take days to dry.

Bellyblueboy · 29/10/2024 20:51

dishwasher.

when I moved house I was without a tumble dryer for a year and it was fine. I lasted a month without a dishwasher😂

Absolutely a tumble drier, no question about it. When you see how much water comes out of the condenser drier you definitely don't want that in the walls of your house causing damp.

fallenbranches · 29/10/2024 20:54

@Midwintermayhem I agree with tumble dryer. With two kids I don't know how I would get through the damp winters here with a ton of washing without a tumble dryer. I don't mind washing up by hand at all.

I've never had a tumble dryer ruin clothes. Millions of people have them, and their clothes are fine.

Dryer. Nothing worse than it being wet outside and having to hang wet washing inside in my opinion 🫣

Goodness. I've never had that in 30 years! I have a Miele dryer at the moment. It's efficient and effective - not one item ruined, or even mildly changed. Most odd.

HaddyAbrams · 29/10/2024 21:02

The thing I've ever ruined in my dryer was a pair of handmade socks. Apparently alpaca yarn isn't tumble dryerable

SweetBaklava · 29/10/2024 21:06

Small dishwasher and washer/dryer here. Our washer/dryer is new and it's ace!!! Not cheap purchase though (Bosch Serie 8)

bananafishbones1 · 29/10/2024 21:06

Dishwasher without question. But I detest washing up

BeMintBee · 29/10/2024 21:11

Tumble dryer without question.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/10/2024 21:12

Always dw

Clothes can be hung on a clothes horse in bedroom /spare room and obv outside in summer

cleowasmycat · 29/10/2024 21:14

Dryers eat electricity.

Dryers eat electricity.

They really don't. You can calculate usage, modern ones are very efficient.
