Bright blue bathroom suite - what colour walls?

We have one of those old-fashioned blue bathroom suites - a sort of turquoise blue. We can't afford to have the bathroom entirely redone so we are keeping the blue sink/tub (and the dreadful off-white tiles patterned with a sort of grubby green cactus print).

We're stripping the wallpaper though and I'm a bit stumped as to what colour to paint the walls? What goes with turquoise blue and off-white/tiny bits of yellow-green? A darker/lighter blue? White?

Any suggestions much appreciated Grin

I’d keep it as plain as possible and just do white tbh

maudelovesharold · 16/07/2024 15:10

Can we have a photo?

ChopSue · 16/07/2024 16:12

We have mid blue tiles and F and B Cromarty paint, which works really well. It should sit ok with your white/green tiles as well I think.

DeedlessIndeed · 16/07/2024 16:31

How deep / intense is the bath colour OP?

If it is sugary/light I think pink would work really well. There are some vintage bathroom accounts on instagram, and I really do like the aqua/turquoise and pink variations.

However, if you would be happy to share an image of similar bath/tiles, it might be easier to make a suggestion!

We painted the walls white and sponged them with a blue colour. Then nautical accessories. Was my favourite room to relax in.

We had similar! It took a few years to get the money to do it and it was worth every penny! Ours was like this picture.
Personally I wouldn't waste any money on it, just save the money to put towards the new suite

White or an almost white/pink (blossom pink). Plain as possible.

Frowningprovidence · 16/07/2024 17:51

Can you match the off white of the tile? White might make it look grubbier.

We need a photo. I'm struggling to imagine it.

We had a suite the colour that McGooch23 posted a pic of in a rental. We went with pine wooden floor and cupboard, white textured wallpaper walls and painted one wall a deep blue which wasn't close to any of the fittings.

I reckon you could make a feature of it maybe. A quick Google and I found this which I actually really like.

Go with the colour and do maximalist style wall paper or go full 70s style and make it look deliberate

pinacollateral · 17/07/2024 07:14

It's hard to say without seeing it but if you have coloured units then the safest bet will be neutral for everything else - so white/ cream.

What do you have on the floor?

No advice, I am just ridiculously excited that coloured bathroom suites are back in style! We're planning to remodel the family bathroom soon and I'm tempted to get an avocado one :)

Our family bathroom when we moved in was avocado. I never changed it but revamped with new tiles, flooring, wallpaper and built-in cupboards . It's a good change from white.

If the tiles are naff and don't match nothing you do will end up looking right. I remember my mum having this problem as a kid in the 70's with a pale yellow suite and tiles that were white but had a green vein pattern on. It just looked like a giant cheese and onion crisp packet. She tried so many wallpapers to try and pull it together but never could.
We then had it when we moved to our current place, an inoffensive cream suite but brown shaded tiles from hell with a drops of water pattern. I saw the same tiles in either the Newbury or Oxford services on the A34 which reinforced my distaste. In the end a new bathroom became a priority for us.

I love that navy suite, I know it's going to show every speck of dirt (as had a dark brown suite c1982 as a student) but I really like that.

Userxyd · 17/07/2024 08:32

How light is the room? How about navy paint to make the suit and tiles pop, with loads of plants with yellow/green leaves to pick out the tiles? Go jungle style?

PanettoneSoprano · 17/07/2024 08:34

Please can we see a picture?

NeedToKnow101 · 17/07/2024 09:26

I'd absolutely love that bathroom suite.
If you can't afford to retile it (which I'd look into), I'd maybe paint the tiles white and the wallpaper either a darker blue or a setting plaster or blush type pink.

Pics please!

@maudelovesharold

This is what it looks like! With that kind of off-white walls. Another issue is there is NO space, which drives me crazy. It exists under the stairs so the roof is slanted and the sink looks out through a window so there's no space for a mirror/cabinet etc.

I didn't expect so much help from this thread! I'll see if I can figure out how to upload a photo from my phone to give a more accurate idea.

If it looks like the one posted, then I could definitely see it as a feature suite with a cream wall colour similar to that in the pic! Does the motif on the tiles in any way pick up the colour of the suite? How ‘off white’ are the tiles?

rwalker · 17/07/2024 10:43

that’s an art deco gem
perhaps white tiles black boarder and get paint colour mixed same as suite to paint walls

My friend painted her bathroom tiles. They were a dark shiny green and she didn't know if it would work. She bought the special paint from B & Q. You would never know. She now has white tiles.
