Bright blue bathroom suite - what colour walls?

hedgehoggle · 16/07/2024 15:08

We have one of those old-fashioned blue bathroom suites - a sort of turquoise blue. We can't afford to have the bathroom entirely redone so we are keeping the blue sink/tub (and the dreadful off-white tiles patterned with a sort of grubby green cactus print).

We're stripping the wallpaper though and I'm a bit stumped as to what colour to paint the walls? What goes with turquoise blue and off-white/tiny bits of yellow-green? A darker/lighter blue? White?

Any suggestions much appreciated Grin

I have hopefully attached a picture of the bathroom.. it's hard to take a picture of all of it because the roof is sloped under the shower/bath. I've also attached a picture of the tiles. The walls are currently blue/grey peeling wallpaper...

  1. Update the taps
  2. Retile with modern tiles (I like the idea of a monochrome approach, and choosing tiles that are in the same colour family as your suite)
  3. What is the storage like in the room? Keep it decluttered and minimalistic as much as possible.

I would match the pale plaster/blushish colour in the cactus pots, think it would look great

Bright white. Use a proper tile paint to paint the tiles white too.
For the floor I would put cork or vinyl wood planks or linoleum.

hedgehoggle · 17/07/2024 15:03

I know it's cluttered Grin but that's life! One issue is there is no storage... I can't see where I could put it? The angle not featured is literally the door! Where could a cabinet go?

Lucky you OP!

I’d probably go with a nice rich cream, or a bright white. Towels and accessories either in blue to match the suite or a contrasting colour - light pink?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the bathroom suite. I quite like it. What's the option...boring white. I agree with a pp who said change the taps...that will really up the game.

I don't like the tiles. I think they ruin the look. I'd either paint them or replace them depending on how much you want to spend.

I take way too long to type and cross-posted.

there is a plant in the upper right corner of the tile that is sort of a grey-blue. It is sticking up straight. That is the starting color. Match that and then find its partners in terms of lighter and darker and see which one looks best.

libertybonds · 17/07/2024 15:06

If the tiles aren't broken, I wouldn't bother updating them.

There are loads of maximilist and vintage FB groups / other SM where they would drool over your suite. Maybe look this up - they would lean into this look with intense wallpaper.

I suggest seeing if you can install any wall shelves to maximise storage.

Babychewtoy · 17/07/2024 15:08

I actually like that!
I would go dusky pink or something like Farrow & Ball setting plaster.

Or the same turquoise as the cactus on the tiles.

They do! We don't want do new tiles if possible (which would make it look a lot better) as we are thinking of moving relatively soon. But open to new blinds/taps/walls etc.

I agree the tiles are the problem. I can't imagine who would choose such a hideous colour!

Where would you put the wall shelves? I'm cautious as to putting it on the side above the sink, as I think I'd constantly hit my head!

Sorry, I should have just posted again instead of editing.

hedgehoggle · 17/07/2024 15:12

Definitely getting a theme of people saying pink, which I'm not opposed to but:

  • our kitchen (which connects to this) is blush pink
  • our living room is pink

We also have a pink bedroom and a pink toilet.

We are surely approaching the point of pink madness?!

Regarding storage, what about hanging vegtable racks from the ceiling and/or veg rack under the sink?

Babychewtoy · 17/07/2024 15:16

Well you may as well lean in to the pink theme then and do the whole house 😂

If not I think matching the turquoise / aqua colour from the plants on the tiles would be best.

From a storage point of view there are lots of cabinets that fit around a pedestal basin, like this one from Next for example. Cheaper ones available and also worth looking at Ikea.

I would try and just go plain cream on the walls and hide the clutter and then live with it.

Am I the only one who finds the little tiled plant pot picture quite sweet and charming??

Sorry, no help OP but I agree that pink would go well. Although I take your point about your pink themed house!

I think I liked it at one point... but it throws the curveball of RED into the bathroom, which has already got a lot going on! The cactus bit is alright, but I hate the glossy beige/yellow/off-white tiles that accompany it...

My bathroom in my first house had a green suite. We painted the walls purple and made a feature of the whole room. We thought we should maybe change it when we went to sell but the buyers loved it!

Frowningprovidence · 17/07/2024 15:51

I'm not sure pink works with the tiles even though I like pink and turquoise. Although it us hard to see.

I think I agree with PP that there is a grey/blue plant that tones with all the different bits.

Itsrainingten · 17/07/2024 16:44

It's kind of making me want a coloured bathroom suite now. Look at how lovely these colours look
