What's more important - dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Evening all! We have just sold our property and found a lovely little house which we hope to put an offer in on Monday. The only problem is, it is smaller than our current one (but is in school catchment / has lots of other benefits which outweigh the negatives), and does not have a garage (we currently have one stacked full of DH's tools and my tumble dryer). The new house is an end of terrace that has no further potential for extending and no garage.

The kitchen in the new house is lovely but minimalist with few built in cupboards. There is already a built in washing machine, but, due to the aforementioned lack of cupboards / space, it will be a toss up between installing either a tumble dryer or dishwasher.

We are a family of 4 (DH works away during the week) and I have 2 young DC. I think they would help with the washing up, but I do like just putting on the dishwasher of an evening - so much easier! But, that being said, I do a lot of washing and my tumble dryer is a godsend (I know some people hate them, but it helps me keep on top of running our busy household).

So, what would you prioritise? Dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Dryer.

It's doesn't take long to hand wash dishes if you have no choice , but it's rather difficult to get wet laundry dry indoors.

Is there room in the kitchen for a smaller dishwasher that fits on the worktop? I once had a house with a small kitchen without space for a dishwasher and got a small one that sat on the worktop. It was great for plates, cutlery, cups etc.

caringcarer · 08/06/2024 22:03

Dishwasher for me.

Netcam · 08/06/2024 22:04

It was something like this: www.applianceshop.co.uk/zanussi-zdm17301wa-compact-table-top-dishwasher-white

Tumble drier wins hands down for me. We have rain and cold weather for about 7/8 months out of 12 or so it seems at the minute! It's impossible to dry it within 24 hours.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 08/06/2024 22:04

Tumble drier is a must especially with small kids and the shitty British weather! You could get a table top dishwasher to help with the pots

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 08/06/2024 22:05

Everyone is different. We never use the dishwasher and I must be doing something wrong because surely it takes longer to load the dishwasher than wash up and I can never fit everything in! For me it would be tumble drier.

Saschka · 08/06/2024 22:06

Dishwasher and washer/dryer. And heater airer, which honestly works better than a tumble dryer for clothes that crease easily (you hang them up and the creases drop out).

OppsUpsSide · 08/06/2024 22:07

I have a dishwasher and a washer dryer that is amazing (it was expensive)

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 08/06/2024 22:51

Tumble dryer for me - don't mind waahing up and would hate to h
have wet washing everywhere in winter

Mumteedum · 08/06/2024 23:57

Check out local laundry services. We have a fantastic launderette. I used to do my washing and pop down to dry it on wet days before I got a tumble dryer. Looking back... don't know why we didn't have one. There was room in that house! 🙄

In a small kitchen, dishwasher is essential if there's more than one of you! Keeps it tidy.

Geneticsbunny · 09/06/2024 10:23

Can you fit a ceiling airer on the upstairs landing or above the stairs or even in the bathroom? You can fit at least a load of washing on them and they dry in about 24 hours. Not perfect but extremely useful if you have no tumble drier.

Snackpocket · 09/06/2024 10:27

Get a washer dryer machine, people say they are shit and break but ours is 11 years old! The drying does take longer than a standalone one but it’s still good to have for at least bedding and towels. We’ve never had a dishwasher so I can’t comment on that!

stargazer02 · 09/06/2024 10:40

Dishwasher as it's used every day (probably) and keeps the kitchen surfaces tidier.

Tumble drier could potentially be somewhat hidden in another room other than kitchen as long as it was a condenser, if you needed it.

I found a dehumidifier excellent for drying clothes faster when using an airer. Hate having them around the house.

ZazieBeth · 09/06/2024 10:47

Dishwasher and get washer dryer when the machine needs to be replaced.

rosesandlollipops · 09/06/2024 12:59

Tumble dryer! I've not had a dishwasher for 4 years and have four small kids. I would ideally get a washer/dryer and dishwasher in your position though.

museumum · 09/06/2024 13:06

We use the dishwasher daily and the tumble dryer weekly at most, hardly ever in summer.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 09/06/2024 13:06

Definitely dishwasher.
We are lucky that we have a garden that can have airer and a back room with a heated airer and dehumidifier. My friend hasn't got space for an inside airer all the time so she uses a gazebo outside with her airer underneath that works really well .

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/06/2024 13:08

Dishwasher

TheLurpackYears · 09/06/2024 13:10

I have a dish washer but have a good washing line for dry days and a dehumidifier that I run in my "drying cupboard " when it's wet out. It gets a smallish load of laundry dry in 2 hours and is also great for wet shoes and coats.

PickAChew · 09/06/2024 13:16

Tumble dryer for us. A modern dryer can go anywhere and takes up less space than a rack of laundry, which you no doubt need more than one of if you do a lot of it. Wet clothes everywhere aren't great for the fabric of your house, either. No reason why it can't go in a bedroom for daytime use. Ours sits in the dining room area of a kitchen diner.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 09/06/2024 13:36

If I could really have only one I'd go for the dishwasher.

Could you perhaps get a table top dishwasher and also have a tumble dryer?
Or a dishwasher in the kitchen and the tumble dryer somewhere else in the house?

GasPanic · 09/06/2024 14:29

Surely a very personal thing.

I barely use the TD but the DW is on every day.

I think you are going to struggle in a small house with clothes drying everywhere in winter. With 4 people living in it the whole house is going to get damp.

Why do you not get a washer dryer and a dehumidfier and a dishwasher ?

Washer Dryers aren't great and the loads are reduced, but it may have just enough capacity to take the edge off the house full of washing problem in the winter.

GasPanic · 09/06/2024 14:36

Oh and also make sure you get the washer that spins like crazy to get the clothes very dry before you need the dryer.

Get a dishwasher and a washer / dryer.

Agreed or the drier rather than dishwasher
hanging out clothing in gardens and worst still on balconies looks awful. Hanging inside just creates damp/consesation makes wall go off and not good for helat etc
