What's more important - dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Evening all! We have just sold our property and found a lovely little house which we hope to put an offer in on Monday. The only problem is, it is smaller than our current one (but is in school catchment / has lots of other benefits which outweigh the negatives), and does not have a garage (we currently have one stacked full of DH's tools and my tumble dryer). The new house is an end of terrace that has no further potential for extending and no garage.

The kitchen in the new house is lovely but minimalist with few built in cupboards. There is already a built in washing machine, but, due to the aforementioned lack of cupboards / space, it will be a toss up between installing either a tumble dryer or dishwasher.

We are a family of 4 (DH works away during the week) and I have 2 young DC. I think they would help with the washing up, but I do like just putting on the dishwasher of an evening - so much easier! But, that being said, I do a lot of washing and my tumble dryer is a godsend (I know some people hate them, but it helps me keep on top of running our busy household).

So, what would you prioritise? Dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Dishwasher for me... wouldn't be without it. Use it at least three times a day. I don't have a tumble dryer...I have a heated airer and when the weather is nice, I hang things outside.

PricklyPearNoThornsPlease · 08/06/2024 19:23

Dishwasher and get a washer-dryer

NotSoFunThis · 08/06/2024 19:24

Tumble dryer for me.

therejustbarely · 08/06/2024 19:25

We cope without a tumble drier but not a dishwasher. What about a heated airer as a compromise?

StoneTheCrone · 08/06/2024 19:25

Get a dishwasher and a washer / dryer.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/06/2024 19:25

Tumble dryer. I'm single with 2 primary aged DC. I rarely use the dishwasher. My tumble dryer broke a couple of months ago - I decided I'd manage the summer without it, but bloody hell it's hard work, especially with the crap weather.

delphinedupont · 08/06/2024 19:25

Dishwasher. I got one last year after 23 years of homeownership and I love it so, so much. Never had a tumbler dryer, use a combination of drying outside, over radiators in winter and a dehumidifier.

bluecomputerscreen · 08/06/2024 19:25

dishwasher.

small shed for dryer? or a combi washer dryer.

whosaidtha · 08/06/2024 19:26

I'd say dishwasher because we don't have a tumble dryer. But when our washing machine broke it was so quick to do a load at my mums with the tumble dryer so I think you'll find the transition very hard.

GCAcademic · 08/06/2024 19:26

Tumble dryer. You can always wash dishes, but how are you supposed to dry clothes in the weather we’ve been having if you don’t have a tumble dryer?

Pricklyhogs · 08/06/2024 19:27

Tumble dryer for me. Trying to dry clothes for four people inside in the rainy UK is not a happy thought. You can wash up easily but drying a bedding/ towels/ clothes inside with no tumble dryer is a nightmare

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 08/06/2024 19:28

Tumble. You can wash dishes easily enough but drying clothes during the shite weather months is a ballache

tarheelbaby · 08/06/2024 19:28

Dishwasher for me but I have a big house and lots of drying options (spare room, racks, dehumidifier, radiator system, teenagers to hang up laundry 😁)

Elliesmumma · 08/06/2024 19:30

Dishwasher. I bought an electric clothes horse. It’s much more economical than a tumble dryer and dries clothes quickly. Great for winter or days when you can’t hang washing out.
Time spent washing up is just dead time you can never get back. I absolutely hate it.

Clingfilm · 08/06/2024 19:30

Tumble every time especially with 4 of you. Weather isn't reliable.

Runnerduck34 · 08/06/2024 19:31

For me Tumble dryer.
If you wash up as you go it's not too bad.
No being able to dry clothes particularly if you have a large family is a pita and a wet summer is the worst situation for drying clothes

maw1681 · 08/06/2024 19:32

Dishwasher and get a washer dryer for emergencies.
Dry clothes on washing line or heated airer

househelpneeded24 · 08/06/2024 19:34

I had to make this decision and I chose the tumble. I can (and do) wash up daily - multiple times - which is annoying but having 4 people's clothes plus sheets and towels around the house drove me mad plus it was hard to do emergency washes for the next day. I miss my dishwasher but don't regret the decision.

Especially during times of stomach bugs. It's come into its own then.

BG2015 · 08/06/2024 19:34

Dishwasher without a doubt.

We use a heated airer and dry outside when we can. Don't miss a dryer at all.

ItsNotInMyMind · 08/06/2024 19:35

We haven’t had a tumble dryer for years and I don’t miss it. Dishwasher on the other hand is a big thing for me. I like how it keeps the kitchen tidy!

AlexandraJJ · 08/06/2024 19:35

If there’s nowhere to dry clothes def tumble dryer

Jeannie88 · 08/06/2024 19:36

Dishwasher, hardly use tumble dryer. Xx

BertieBotts · 08/06/2024 19:38

Dishwasher. I love my tumble dryer but it's much harder to catch up with a backlog of washing up than it is to catch up with a backlog of washing.

Could you fit the tumble dryer in an upstairs room, possibly a bathroom? It's closer to where you put the clothes away after all.

NoseNothing · 08/06/2024 19:39

I use both the dishwasher and the tumble dryer every day. I would honestly find it very difficult to adjust to not having either and would avoid buying a house where I couldn’t have both - sorry!

I guess if I absolutely had to choose I’d give up the tumble dryer but if the house is small that doesn’t sound feasible. Is it small or just smaller than your existing house?

AliceMcK · 08/06/2024 19:39

We don’t have either but vote dryer, especially in winter. We’ve got a good house for drying and a decent heated maiden but I’d opt for dryer every time. Very easy for me to say as DH usually dose the dishes, DH would choose dishwasher.
