What's more important - dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Evening all! We have just sold our property and found a lovely little house which we hope to put an offer in on Monday. The only problem is, it is smaller than our current one (but is in school catchment / has lots of other benefits which outweigh the negatives), and does not have a garage (we currently have one stacked full of DH's tools and my tumble dryer). The new house is an end of terrace that has no further potential for extending and no garage.

The kitchen in the new house is lovely but minimalist with few built in cupboards. There is already a built in washing machine, but, due to the aforementioned lack of cupboards / space, it will be a toss up between installing either a tumble dryer or dishwasher.

We are a family of 4 (DH works away during the week) and I have 2 young DC. I think they would help with the washing up, but I do like just putting on the dishwasher of an evening - so much easier! But, that being said, I do a lot of washing and my tumble dryer is a godsend (I know some people hate them, but it helps me keep on top of running our busy household).

So, what would you prioritise? Dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Tumble dryer…..I use my dishwasher on Christmas Day only

Sameturd · 08/06/2024 20:59

Dishwasher my kitchen would look trashed without one.

We are a family of 5. And used to have the dryer on all the time. I stopped using it when gas and electricity bills went up. To be honest I don't miss it to much.

Are washer / dryers good nowadays?

No, they're useless!! Don't waste your money OP.

Depends on the washer-dryer. Mine’s pretty decent - seems to wash and dry things properly, anyway, which is surely all you want from it?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/06/2024 21:00

Tumble dryer.
Mine broke over the Winter & it was an absolute pita trying to get everything dry over the Winter & that was even with a heated airer!

However like pp's have said if you have room to put a tumble dryer in your bedroom or shed or have room for one of those Sheila thingys in your stair well then u can have your dishwasher too!

UnimaginableWindBird · 08/06/2024 21:02

Dishwasher and a dehumidifier.

Dishwasher and get a washer-dryer

Yes, this. We’ve had a washer dryer for years (john Lewis one, zanussi under the hood) and it’s been great. Probably not as efficient as a standalone tumble dryer but I find it totally fine. Get as large a capacity one as you can. I know lots of people say they’re dreadful but I’ve always found ours excellent.

Replace the washing machine with washer dryer and get a dishwasher

Tumble dryer

LauderSyme · 08/06/2024 21:14

Dishwasher, definitely.

It saves me so much time and boring effort, and apparently the eco programme (which I always use) is very efficient in terms of water and heat, so is no worse for the environment than washing up by hand.

Whereas a tumble dryer is burning fuel and money to do something that air and time will do for free. The environmentally unfriendly aspect of tumble drying is something I can't get past, even though those who love them say they are a godsend.

You could look into getting a ceiling mounted pulley airer/dryer and install it above a radiator, or perhaps place a portable dehumidifier in the room. Things dry very fast near a good dehumidifier, even thick bath towels.

I know you didn't ask, but could you extend into the attic if you need more space in future?

AnotherEmma · 08/06/2024 21:17

Dishwasher. I hate washing up.

We have a washer-dryer and it works well. We don't use the dryer function too often but it is handy for sheets/towels if the weather is wet or unpredictable.

In wet/cold weather I used a heated airer and dehumidifier, they work very well and dry laundry fast. You do need space for them obviously but can put them away when not in use.

clare8allthepies · 08/06/2024 21:20

Tumble dryer every time! We had to make this choice when we moved here a few years back.

Washing up is a chore but only a minor inconvenience. I can stay on top of drying the washing if I do only one load a day and hang it around the house but I wouldn’t have a hope of drying bedding or towels especially with the awful months of weather we’ve just had.

Autumn1990 · 08/06/2024 21:20

Dishwasher is more important
Tumble dryer can go anywhere if it’s condensing. Mines in a cupboard in my bedroom. or get a washer dryer

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2024 21:24

Dishwasher.

Dishwashers work out more economical than handwashing and definitely save lots of hard boring work.

You can line dry your washing, thus saving the planet and your bills.

I've never had a dishwasher so honestly don't know what I'm missing. We're also a family of 4 and I don't understand how 4 people can create enough dishes to fill a dishwasher daily? Definitely the dryer! I couldn't be without mine, it's a godsend for getting towels and bedding dry in the winter and on wet summer days.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/06/2024 21:25

I’ve got a tumble drier which isn’t used much and a dish washer.

DM when we were kids had a tumble drier which was used a lot until it broke and then never used and was got rid of. She got a dishwater when we were teens and apparently her DM (our nana) offered to buy her a dishwasher when we were young kids but she refused! It would’ve saved so many arguments between me and DB.

They are an absolute godsend. I don’t always put eg pots and pans or large cooking trays in it but it’s amazing doing plates, bowls, cups and cutlery. Does save water too.

Lucy377 · 08/06/2024 21:33

Dishwasher without hesitation.
Please do not do without the dishwasher.
Nothing worse come 8pm after a long day and the dishes still waiting. Nothing worse.

Remember you have to live in this house day in and day out. It sounds like it's too small for you.

Galliano · 08/06/2024 21:35

I'm one the camp of couldn't bear to be without either.
I know washer dryers have the reputation of being rubbish but I'd be researching hard for the best possible one and in the scheme of why you are moving throw any amount at it (e.g. perhaps Miele have cracked it?).

HolyMoly24 · 08/06/2024 21:37

Tumble dryer for me with our British weather. We don't have anywhere to store a heated airer.

I've never had a dishwasher and don't feel the need for one really

Cheshiresun · 08/06/2024 21:39

Dishwasher, definitely. Use that most days. Tumble dryer hardly ever use, maybe a couple of times per year.

Madcats · 08/06/2024 21:40

Dishwasher and buy a dehumidifier!

I might caveat this if the home is tiny and you are all super-sporty.

Fabvegetablegrower · 08/06/2024 21:49

I'd say dishwasher there are 4 of us. We live in the south so most of the washing goes on the line or the airer. Would never want to be without one saves so much time.

Rainydayinlondon · 08/06/2024 21:56

With hot water and fairy liquid, washing up should take 15-20 minutes. Drying clothes in winter on the other hand can take 2-3 DAYS!!

betterangels · 08/06/2024 21:59

GCAcademic · 08/06/2024 19:26

Tumble dryer. You can always wash dishes, but how are you supposed to dry clothes in the weather we’ve been having if you don’t have a tumble dryer?

Yes, this. Would not be without mine.

REPLIED TO WRONG PERSON 😂

i wash up as I go along and actually can’t bear plates with dried gravy sitting in the dishwasher.
Im quite profligate though and use lots of running hot water and a sponge, but even Christmas dinner for 8 with associated tureens etc, I do in half an hour
