What's more important - dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Evening all! We have just sold our property and found a lovely little house which we hope to put an offer in on Monday. The only problem is, it is smaller than our current one (but is in school catchment / has lots of other benefits which outweigh the negatives), and does not have a garage (we currently have one stacked full of DH's tools and my tumble dryer). The new house is an end of terrace that has no further potential for extending and no garage.

The kitchen in the new house is lovely but minimalist with few built in cupboards. There is already a built in washing machine, but, due to the aforementioned lack of cupboards / space, it will be a toss up between installing either a tumble dryer or dishwasher.

We are a family of 4 (DH works away during the week) and I have 2 young DC. I think they would help with the washing up, but I do like just putting on the dishwasher of an evening - so much easier! But, that being said, I do a lot of washing and my tumble dryer is a godsend (I know some people hate them, but it helps me keep on top of running our busy household).

So, what would you prioritise? Dishwasher or tumble dryer?

Dryer would be more important for me, especially with two small kids. I usually hang towels in winter (on an airer at a south facing door) but HAVE to finish them and most other items in the dryer. It also means I don’t have to iron.

I lived without a dishwasher for about 6 months last year when our old one gave up. We just had to be very strict about washing up immediately and not allowing it to build up. In fact, I now no longer use the new dishwasher every day.

Do you have space for a countertop dishwasher?

It would be a tumble dryer for me. The weather is way too unpredictable in this country. I lasted 6 weeks without a tumble, never again. Clothes are not so bad but getting towels and sheets dry is an absolute ball ache.

Dish washing is also a pain, but at least the kids can help with that!

PatienceOfEngels · 08/06/2024 20:18

Tumbledryer.

Washing up doesn't take that long. Now my DC take turns with drying up as well.

HappyHedgehog247 · 08/06/2024 20:20

I use my slimline dishwasher every day. I have a washer/dryer and a heated airer. Enjoy the new house :)

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 08/06/2024 20:22

My dishwasher goes on more often than my tumble dryer, but I’d still prefer to have a dryer over a dishwasher. You can wash dishes really quickly, even if you don’t dry them and leave them on the draining board. Wet clothes take ages to dry, and are much more inconvenient to have around. Not to mention towels and bedding.

LindaDawn · 08/06/2024 20:23

Tumble dryer always!!!

Gunz · 08/06/2024 20:23

Must admit I have not been without tumble dryer for nearly 40 years and the dishwasher came along in the last twenty. I would not go without a tumble dryer - I would look to see if the tumble dryer could be accommodated somewhere else given they can now be non vented. Also I do use a humidifier more which can reduce the need for a tumble dryer.

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/06/2024 20:25

Dryer every time.

The kids can be your dishwasher till they finish school. Do them good.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 08/06/2024 20:26

I’d go for a dishwasher and a washer-dryer/heated airer. We also take the towels and bedding to the laundrette in winter which is a game changer if you’re short in space.

overwork · 08/06/2024 20:27

I have a combination washer / dryer. I know that people hate them and it has some downsides, but, as I can't fit both needs must and I think it's fine! It cannot dry the full load of washing, it kind of heats the clothes rather than dry them out, but it's perfect for drying towels / undies / jeans / bedding and baby clothes etc.

Marblessolveeverything · 08/06/2024 20:28

Dishwasher you can source and pop a dryer in alternative place if it becomes a necessity. Had one in a bedroom when I'm out first apartment. I used to cover it and used it as a dressing table

Ineffable23 · 08/06/2024 20:31

My tumble drier lives in the shed. Ideally I'd have electricity properly out there but as it is I just run an extension out the kitchen window if I need to use it. I don't use it much which is probably somewhat cyclical.

If you use your tumble drier all the time it may be easier to stay on top of the washing up than to find the space to dry everything through winter?

pietut · 08/06/2024 20:31

Oh god that's like Sophie's choice! Is there any option to have a shed in the garden for a tumble dryer? We did that for a few years. Failing that, we have a washer/dryer (as well as a tumble dryer) that's not perfect but better than nothing, so long as the loads are small. I'd basically see what is possibly to try to keep both, they are necessities to me.

Keepthosenamesgoing · 08/06/2024 20:31

I hardly use the dishwasher and with a heated air dryer things you plug in you can dry clothes quite easily

I'd definitely go dishwasher

AIBunnecessary · 08/06/2024 20:31

I would get a dishwasher but get electric put into a shed and get a tumble drier. If you couldn't do this then it would be a tumble drier.

WorkCleanRepeat · 08/06/2024 20:32

Tumble dryer for me. The dishwasher is a nice to have but I wouldn't be without the dryer.

Thank you everyone so far for your opinions / votes - this has been playing on my mind all day! My DC are very sporty and active and will always get caked in mud / sometimes stuff that looks like mud (😂) so my tumble dryer has been a godsend when I have to get kits or uniforms washed and dried for the next day.

In the new house, there is only a kitchen/diner and living room downstairs and 3 bedrooms upstairs (all of which will be used), so no space for drying things inside the house. As a pp said, with this unpredictable weather, it will be a real pain in the bum to dry things on radiators / in the house, especially if my DC are ill (they both have an autoimmune disease which can be horrible on their tummies when it flares up, requiring rapid change of clothes / bedding).

On the other hand, popping things in the dishwasher after a big meal just saves me a headache! But the house does have a lovely Belfast sink and a nice view of the garden if I do opt to forego a dishwasher😂

Are washer / dryers good nowadays? I've only ever had separate washers / dryers.

Thank you to everyone again for your input!

Are washer / dryers good nowadays?

No, they're useless!! Don't waste your money OP.

weegiemum · 08/06/2024 20:45

Definitely dishwasher!

If I could only have one I'd be disconnecting the tumble dryer myself. Get a heated airer (my ds is at uni and says his is amazing!)

Sunnyside4 · 08/06/2024 20:51

We've never had either, and I'd prioritise cupboard space over both.

BCBird · 08/06/2024 20:54

I have both too and whilst I hate washing up, when I downsize I will reluctantly choose a dryer over a dishwasher. U can wash dishes irrespective of weather. The same cannot be said for drying clothes

CheshireCat1 · 08/06/2024 20:55

Neither

BCBird · 08/06/2024 20:56

Washer dryers? Just think, u can only use one function at a time. No doubt when u have a lot of washing, u like to put straight in the dryer and put on next load.

whatnnoww · 08/06/2024 20:57

Dishwasher and find somewhere to have a Sheila’s maid

LightSpeeds · 08/06/2024 20:57

Tumble dryer

Lokshen · 08/06/2024 20:58

Change to a washer-dryer and stick in a dishwasher
