We were supposed to exchnage last week, then yesterday, now the proposal is exchange and complete tomorrow, all delays on buyers side told its mortgage company releasing fund.

property was vacated last week, but I removed the last items yesterday. Went back this evening to do a meter reading. Garden dug up, carpets ripped out, all windows open, lights on.

I am so shocked I have no idea what to do now …technically is burglary … but if this sale falls through I have a much less saleable house …

and before you ask how has he got in, there was a lockbox with keys in that the estate agents have been using … so either they’ve shared the code with him or he’s watched them and then let himself in.

Family friend did this, it became an enormous mess.

She and her sibling inherited a house, they advertised it and found a buyer. It needed to go through probate. Buyer was someone she loosely knew and unknown to sibling she'd given the buyer a key. Buyer then went in, ripped out the kitchen and started remodelling, all whilst probate was still trundling on.

Meanwhile, unrelated to buyers remodelling, the property flooded. Whilst this was all up in the air with various insurance, and whilst probate was still ongoing, the family friend died.

It became a huge mess, and in all honesty I don't know where everything is at now, friend's husband will inherit her share of the probate property but presumably her probate now needs to go through as well before the property can complete.
Sibling is now trying to deal with the mess and praying buyer doesn't drop out.

Crikey! Condolences for the loss of your family friend Flowers

I bought my first house directly from my landlord so I was already living it throughout the purchase process and I didn’t dare touch a thing before Completion, even though I was chomping at the bit to start stripping off the woodchip wallpaper!

I genuinely thought they were having me on when I was told this, but such a mess. She was a lovely woman, and no great age when she passed, I guess she thought she was doing something nice for the buyer and didn't really think things through much further.

Our house had tenants who were supposed to move out during the buying process. We came to do a pre exchange check, met our sellers at the house (who we knew) only to discover the tenants had done a flit, several weeks before according to neighbours, and didn't bother locking anything up behind them.

I never want to move again.

It was a thread where the op built the story up about crows attacking her whenever she tried to go outside. She then posted to announce she was attempting a long walk and would return in an hour to let everyone know how she fared. She never came back and everyone was left hanging like a group of Aurora Borealis spectators standing at the wrong end of the globe. There seem to be lots of these threads popping up. I guess they get a buzz out of generating interest and exploiting the gullibility of bored mumsnetters… harmless but faintly irritating.

She posted over a dozen times for 6 pages and only stopped this morning. Some people do have work and things to go to. It’s not really her fault that it’s gained so much interest without her

hope you've exhanged and even better completed OP.
I'd be having words with the EA.

Yeah - it made Trending and the Facebook feed (which is why so many posters on the first thread hadn't RTFT!)

I think you mean the garage is full of your equipment you'll be taking with you. Perhaps returnable in exchange for the amount they negotiated off for carpets?

Hello! We completed about an hour ago.

EA are at a loss as to how this could have happened!! Solicitors were horrified.

Apologies to anyone feeling aggrieved that I’ve not updated during the day but I have a job where I can’t access the internet while I’m working!

Iwishiwasjoking · 09/05/2024 16:09

Oh and just to make it clear, the carpets was just one of the reasons they negotiated a lower price. There was a more serious defect that became apparent when a piece of furniture was moved.

SheilaFentiman · 09/05/2024 16:09

So glad you have completed and they didn't muck you about more!

MaggieFS · 09/05/2024 16:09

Great news, congratulations. Now you can set to work on the EA's significant fee reduction!

Ooh thanks for the update, think we were all dying to know. And congratulations on Completing today, I guess it seems less important now that they got in a day early (they were still CFs though)

fungipie · 09/05/2024 16:11

Pheeew- blimey, what a rollercoaster. Put is al behind you now, but I would definitely ask for a reduction in fee from the EA.
