Are there any fans of Brutalism?

We are thinking about moving into a 1970s brutalist apartment. When we mention this to people or show photographs of the block, they recoil or comment how ugly it is.

We love it!

What is it??

MangosteenSoda · 06/05/2024 20:57

I’m glad that we don’t live in a predominantly brutalist environment. That makes good brutalism stand out to be appreciated!

I’d be all up for it!

BouleDeSuif · 06/05/2024 21:00

I love it!

Francisflute · 06/05/2024 21:02

Huge fan!! Show us a pic OP! Are you going to decorate with a nod to the period?

OldTinHat · 06/05/2024 21:07

I love seeing the Alexandra Road Estate on TV series. It looks both terrifying and beautiful.

I'd love to visit.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2024 21:08

I like some of it. Love the Barbican and Paddy's Wigwam!

It's bold for sure and I wouldn't want the whole nation built up like that buti think it's a beaut! I love the lines, the presence, the ownership of the materials! perfect I think in the setting as it has the feeling of being a sea or naval defence structure. So much more interesting than endless fake frills- neo gothic, poundbury-style, mock Tudor

Love it. There is a little estate in the South side of Glasgow which is a little gem of apartments with amazing light.

BananaLlama123 · 06/05/2024 21:12

I have a teeny concrete model of the Moore Street substation in Sheffield on my desk :-)

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2024 21:17

@BananaLlama123 wow. They are fab. Love them!

AsYouMightBe · 06/05/2024 21:17

I had my mind changed by the South Bank and Barbican.

EmmyPankhurst · 06/05/2024 21:18

You need to join the 20th century society.

You will meet your people.

AgathaMystery · 06/05/2024 21:19

I love it. We live in a brutalist- era house that is slightly softer on the eye but it def architectural marmite. We love it

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2024 21:22

Love it. I'm a bit obsessed with the Barbican. I used to work close to it and popped in occasionally to look around. I was fascinated with the place. Done right, the brutalist buildings were stunning.

CheerfulBunny · 06/05/2024 21:23

Comedian Angela Barnes is obsessed with Brutalist architecture. She has a polished concrete engagement ring!

WhatHaveIFound · 06/05/2024 21:26

Love brutalist buildings and have lived in one. DH and I have been known to go searching for them on holiday too.

Funnywonder · 06/05/2024 21:27

The extension built onto the Ulster Museum in the late 60's/early 70's is Brutalist and I am rather fond of it. I go there a lot with my youngest, as he has regular appointments nearby and I always cast an eye over it before we go in. It is generally detested though.

BusyMintCrab · 06/05/2024 21:28

I used to live near Cables Wynd in Leith. I thought it was awful until I googled it but it is actually very interesting!

Purplepepsi · 06/05/2024 21:30

This is in Southampton. Apparently well designed to live in, with community rooms, drying rooms etc

Love the Southbank and Barbican. Petty France I find depressingly ugly. @BananaLlama123 that website is great.

Sidles off to Google polished concrete rings...

I do always enjoy the fun game of 'which flat in the Barbican would I buy if I won the Euromillions..?'

Oldandcobwebby · 06/05/2024 21:34

I'm very envious!

FeatheryStroker · 06/05/2024 21:47

They make me feel uncomfortable.

When I was about four I saw these flats in Montreal and the sight of them frightened me. Once I was walking my dog and I ended up under a huge metal viaduct and I felt similarly freaked out.
