Are there any fans of Brutalism?

We are thinking about moving into a 1970s brutalist apartment. When we mention this to people or show photographs of the block, they recoil or comment how ugly it is.

We love it!

KorokCentral · 06/05/2024 19:57

I’d fight you for it !

wonderstuff · 06/05/2024 19:58

Love brutalism, Southbank in London is stunning. Do you have pictures of your new place?

Withswitch · 06/05/2024 19:59

You'll need to stock your kitchen with People Will Always Need Plates homeware

Rainbowshit · 06/05/2024 20:01

Love!

We stayed in this hotel in Flaine. Most people hate it. We loved it.

Interesting. It depends. I like the Barbican, the National Theatre and the South Bank centre. Others not so much, but it's often to do with poor maintenance on post-war housing estates. I don't love the Trellick or Balfron towers but I know plenty of people do. I think the flats themselves can be spacious, well-designed and airy, but the buildings are often overbearing and disruptive to the surrounding streetscape...and frankly a bit scary. That sort of imposing post-war development tended to suit arts centres a bit better than homes.

And we have the People Will Always Need Plates homeware (DH is a big fan!)

I love it.The Barbican is thing of beauty. Also the former bus station in Preston.

Mosaic123 · 06/05/2024 20:09

You'll live in a cool place!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 06/05/2024 20:11

My arty BIL is a massive Brutalist fan, he’d be green with envy.

It's still the bus station Smile

I am a fan!

Better than any fake Tudor mash up.

NotJohnMajor · 06/05/2024 20:25

I'm fascinated by Brutalist architecture. Done well, it's stunning. Done badly, it has a compelling ugliness.

Welovecrumpets · 06/05/2024 20:26

No. Makes me feel like I’m about to be mugged

moonlitmaze · 06/05/2024 20:28

I love it. That school posted up thread is amazing.

CranfordScones · 06/05/2024 20:28

Not an instant fan, but I used to wander round the Barbican and it did start to grow on me. It's different when you're on the inside...

I love the Barbican estate, it’s a weird thing of beauty.

I also love to look up at the Rowley Way estate in Camden on my way into Euston on the train. Pure brutalist!

PublicServicesShitShow · 06/05/2024 20:50

I love the Brunswick centre in Bloomsbury - not sure if it is termed as Brutalism though?
