(Feel silly asking) but what do you keep in your hall?

Sorry this is going to come off as a bonkers question. We've got builders making a utility room, and an ensuite bathroom and it's going to give us a bigger hall than before. What do you keep in your hall please? Coats, shoes, wet weather stuff and dog paraphernalia will be in a boot room. The building work has turned the house into a flipping tip. I can't think what we're going to keep in the hall. I'm sure it will fill up in time but I want to know what to expect to go there.

We have a huge hall, disproportionate to the rest of the house. Total waste of space really. It has a big cupboard into which gets chucked all the coats, shoes, bags, umberellas etc. door gets shut and then we don't need to think about it.
We then have variously, a long console table with lots of photos on it and a big plant, two book cases with books/nick nack things/more plants, a second smaller console table with a big mirror standing on it, usually a scented candle, more photos and a plant, and then two other big plants dotted about.
The walls have framed posters of exhibitions or concerts that we have been to. And a big velvet curtain that we pull across the front door in winter because it's bloody freezing in there and it makes the rest of the house cold.

Small freezer, peacock chair, shoe rack.

Priminister · 06/04/2024 22:03

Unlike the average MNer, we don’t live in a mansion, so we have a console table and a corner stand for coats, bags, dog lead etc.

caringcarer · 06/04/2024 22:05

A large chest of drawers with 1 row of 3 smaller drawers on top and two rows of 2 drawers. In these drawers I keep dog poo bags. Dogs walking leads, dogs coats, dog wipes, 2 pairs of gloves, a torch, a hat, wet wipes, a towel, spare batteries, a few pens and a notebook, sticky notes, sun glasses and 2 drawer of cricket kit for different teams. I have 4 pegs on the wall with several coats and kagools and a poncho, 2 umbrellas, a very full shoe rack. A walking stick, back pack x 2.

caringcarer · 06/04/2024 22:06

A mirror on the wall and a large montage photo frame with all the 7 cats I ever owned.

Our hall isn't big, we have a table next to the front door with a letter rack drawer type thing on it, where the address book and other bits and bobs are kept, then a bit further along there's a bit that's set back (old house curved walls funny nooks), we have a bench/unit in there with a padded seat, drawers in the middle (umbrellas, hats, scarves, gloves, DS's waterproofs etc) and two large baskets, sandals/ballet pumps in one basket, DS' shoes in the other. Then above we have a shelf thing with coat hooks underneath, it's also opposite the door to the first under stairs cupboard which is where we have a large shoe rack and bag hooks. So mainly storage. There are also paintings on the wall and photos on the stair wall. Runner rug. That's about it

RytonTarget · 06/04/2024 22:12

Mine is less than 1m wide. We have some hooks on the wall for guests but there's not really room to leave anything in there long term.

Chipsahoy · 06/04/2024 22:18

My hall is a fake coat area. So I have a boot room which is functional so the hall can be decorative.
The hallway has a seat with shelves and coat pegs above for pretty things like fairy lights and wreaths hanging down. It looks like it could be functional but as it’s not needed it gets to look pretty. Makes me very happy

BarbarasRhabarberBar · 06/04/2024 22:23

Just to tell you all, if you think you have a small hallway then you should see mine! It's a tiny square with the front door behind you, a door straight to the living room on the left, a door straight to the kitchen on the right and a short door that is under stairs storage in front of you. Pathetic and I'm jealous of you all! I would love a nice table and mirror set with ornaments and space for an additional tree at Christmas!

Ruthietuthie · 06/04/2024 22:25

Baby grand piano.
And a small demilune table, with a mirror, flowers, and a tray where I put my keys and sun-glasses.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 06/04/2024 22:32

I like a hallway free of clutter. Ours has a massive mirror, a shelf with framed prints and a plant, we have a panel with coat hooks on that cost an arm and a leg. No-one is allowed to use them as they’re for show and I don’t want coats ruining the aesthetic 😂

Coats and shoes go in the utility room or a cupboard in the cloakroom.

HeddaGarbled · 06/04/2024 22:33

Baby grand piano

OK, you win 😃

CointreauVersial · 06/04/2024 22:36

Absolutely nothing.

It's a fairly narrow corridor, so there is no room for anything, apart from a doormat.

Diversion · 06/04/2024 22:45

Our hallway off the vestibule has a table with various ornamental items on the top, along with the router, the printer on the bottom and a wine rack with bottles of various gifted fizz (which we dont't drink). We also never use the front door. The inner hall which runs from the kitchen to the utility and has the downstairs bathroom and toilet off just has a mirror on the wall and a couple of slimline laundry baskets. Coats and shoes go in the understairs cupboard in the kitchen and stuff for upstairs gets taken upstairs immediately as I do not like clutter.

bureau bookcase, couple of armchairs, a few rugs, the dinner gong, a sofa table on which all the post is dumped, croquet set and golf clubs for the front lawn (clock golf)

we don’t tend to come into the house there except for formal drinks parties etc. there is a boarded up fireplace but while I would love to reopen it the main Christmas tree sits just in front of it so we probably wouldn’t use it enough…

it is the thoroughfare to upstairs and the library!

@changedMyUsernameToPostThis

You’re taking the piss, yeah?

Bbq1 · 07/04/2024 00:29

One side there's an little inbuilt cupboard. Top of that houses combs, box of bobbles, mousse etc. Little shelf above it houses air fresheners etc. Opposite wall we have a large mirror. Below the mirror is a large pine shoe chest. There's a compartment beneath the lid where we keep gloves, hats, suglasses and seasonal wear. Atop it sits a giant cuddly sheep and a couple of other soft toys. Window ledge there's fairylights in crystal globes, a plant/flowers and a crystal owl. Crystal light catchers hanging in the window. Few ornaments scattered around. Below window is a coat rack containing what looks like dozens of coats, bags etc. Gigantic framed Iron Maiden print on the wall.

Nope! Hence changing my user name it is quite identifiable to anyone who knows us!

It is not as big and grand as it sounds but being a 1910 arts and crafts house the hallway as a welcoming room was a key philosophy… still the size of a normal reception room…

rainontherooftop · 07/04/2024 07:40

Bugger all, I wish I had a big enough hall to put something in!

SheilaMT · 07/04/2024 07:51

We have some bookshelves on the wall above a console table.
Only problem with this is that guests tend to linger on the way out.
Sometimes feels like a lending library !
Nice though. ☺️

LindaDawn · 07/04/2024 09:41

Absolutely nothing in my hallway as it’s just a corridor!

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/04/2024 10:24

Too many shoes and a coat cupboard which also has vacuum cleaner, ironing board and broom and a shelf for bike helmets and umbrellas . There is also a dish for keys on window ledge.

Cheeesus · 07/04/2024 10:28

We have a thing a bit like this but not quite as nice

(Feel silly asking) but what do you keep in your hall?
JaninaDuszejko · 07/04/2024 10:43

We have a small telephone table and chair, and a sideboard. A vase of flowers on the sideboard and a large mirror above it. A large vintage floor vase on the floor. A gallery wall up the stairs. Coats etc in the cloakroom (a proper cloakroom, not a loo), although I'm tempted to get a coatstand for visitors.

Top points for the Iron Maiden print ;-)
