(Feel silly asking) but what do you keep in your hall?

Sorry this is going to come off as a bonkers question. We've got builders making a utility room, and an ensuite bathroom and it's going to give us a bigger hall than before. What do you keep in your hall please? Coats, shoes, wet weather stuff and dog paraphernalia will be in a boot room. The building work has turned the house into a flipping tip. I can't think what we're going to keep in the hall. I'm sure it will fill up in time but I want to know what to expect to go there.

Two shoe racks
A wooden chest
A mirror with shelf below and coat hooks
Another mirror (only window is in the door so it's gloomy)
Plus two meter cupboards on either side of the door.

There's also a tidybooks shelf which has DS's school stuff pinned to the board and hooks underneath with his coats and bag on.

A pineapple table lamp and a Chinese waving lucky cat, waving the money in. Bought on a visit to China and much cherished.

I’m jealous of those with lovely big halls, when I win the lottery I’m buying a house with a gorgeous hall space.

Ours is very annoying as it has the stairs, living room, kitchen and loo doors going off it so there’s no wall space except behind the front door. We have coats hanging there and we can just about have a couple of pairs of shoes in there too but any more and you’re falling over them getting to the next door/up the stairs.

Sunnnybunny72 · 06/04/2024 19:13

An oak cabinet that looks lovely but is full of shoes.

Ha! I've just realised I used the word large four times in that post 🙈🙈

TBF your hall does sound large. I always wanted a large hall that you could put a Christmas tree in and it not be in the way...

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/04/2024 19:22

Coat stand for visitors to hang coats and jackets, console table, chair to sit on when waiting for others or putting on shoes!

Antique pine chest of drawers-drawers for hats, gloves, scarves, dog stuff, crap, etc...
Cast iron freestanding coat stand that is invisible as always covered in about 20 coats.
About 10 x pairs of wellies walking boots and shoes.
Old rocking horse.

Aww! Sounds sweet that you're keeping the old rocking horse :)

Waist level bookcase with photos on top.

Ooh, thanks very much for this. I reckon this would be a great idea.

Console table with bowl for keys, big umbrella stand, art on walls.

Librarybooker · 06/04/2024 19:43

Shoe rack, coat hooks. A tall narrow grey coloured cloth linen basket with scarves, hats and gloves in

Liz1tummypain · 06/04/2024 19:43

Thanks so much to everyone who is answering.

I'm only just starting to realise we're finally going to have this extra space. Not stonkingly massive, maybe 6 ft x 4ft but I just hadn't been thinking about it much and now I've got a much clearer idea. Excellent suggestions for things like a phone, plant, mirror - v important to be sure no lurking spinach, a container/ somewhere for post to go - (never had a place before for this), maybe some photos, and of course the crystals to attract luck, ( extra special thanks @Nellieinthebarn ).

Much appreciated, everyone, it's been so helpful.

Two paintings, a big mirror and one of those nice metal lantern candle thingies… sometimes there’s the odd pair of shoes left there but not for long… we have a coat cupboard off the kitchen so I tend to put coats/shoes in there. I don’t love being confronted with loads of stuff when I walk through the door.

peloton2024 · 06/04/2024 20:02

Coat hooks, wall photos and an Ikea kallax (4x4) for storage

sciencemama · 06/04/2024 20:05

Currently my hallway consists of the under stairs area which we keep the dcs bikes and scooters tbh.
But ideally when the shed gets reroofed they'll go in there and I'll use it as a space for coats and shoes

Previous house, my hallway had a massive cupboard in it which is where we kept the freezer (kitchen was small) alongside a coat rack.

Childhood home had a really wide hallway, we used to keep a big glass cabinet with china in it and a table with our desktop computer there for us to use, it was a nice space to do some homework ect (shared bedroom with siblings which had a console in anyway)

therealcookiemonster · 06/04/2024 20:06

I don't have a bootroom but have a big wardrobe for coats and clothes worn outside that I want to wear again. a small console table that has a vase on it when I can be bothered. a small wicker waste paper basket. a small wicker laundry bin for outside clothes that need to go directly into the wash.

OddBoots · 06/04/2024 20:06

Our domestic battery (BESS) for our solar panels and to get cheap electric on our agile tariff. (as well as the normal stuff already mentioned by others)

FloofCloud · 06/04/2024 20:07

We have a large hallway too, I have a cupboard with the occasional glasses and China in, a long table with keys and bits and bobs on, a table with a lamp and a half moon table with plants, Hive and odds and bobs on. I often keeps my bike in the hallway too when I use it a lot as I hate taking it out of the garage

umberellaonesie · 06/04/2024 20:09

We have small hall, with an under stairs cupboard for coats, ironing board, hoover etc. i have a runner type mat along one wall for shoes, and a shelf woth hooks for keys, dog leads etc.

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/04/2024 20:10

My hall is tiny so a nice runner, radiator cover, little tray for keys, plants, a mirror and usually trainers on the floor.

Ioverslept · 06/04/2024 20:13

I don't have boot room or dog so keep shies, coats., basket with seasonal stuff (hats, gloves, scarves in winter, beach stuff and sun hats in summer), school bags and rucksacks, two cabinets with more shoes, board games, stationery, shopping bags, sunglasses, handbags, shoe cleaning stuff, some tools, batteries etc. and on top vases with flowers and other decorative stuff. Smallish house with little storage so have to use every space!

Ambleen · 06/04/2024 20:14

A console table that has a drawer for keys and address books/business cards. The table opens up and is used as a dining table extension when we have the need. There is a small built in cupboard that houses light bulbs and batteries. The rest is decorative stuff, artwork, rugs and plants.

Clicheinaqashqai · 06/04/2024 20:15

Small bench, mirror, side board/shoerack, cube unit tucked under the stairs for the pit of season stuff, way too many coats, even more shoes, 2 prams, a trike, a bike, a backpack toddler carrier, 2 scooters and about 3 footballs.

Hoping to get a metal store on the driveway for the bikes and scooters as they won't fit one the kids get bigger (they barely do now!)

OhMyGiddyAunt · 06/04/2024 20:29

We have a tall but shallow old wooden cupboard that stores a load of shoes (which is a godsend) and a long sideboard/cupboard that stores bags, hats, gloves, scarves and, of course, has the obligatory top drawer that's full of random crap (tape measures, tissues, clothes brush, spare purse, loyalty cards, luggage scales etc).

The sideboard has a lamp, a phone and lidded storage box that has other crap in and on the wall there are lots of pictures and a very useful key cabinet.
