(Feel silly asking) but what do you keep in your hall?

Sorry this is going to come off as a bonkers question. We've got builders making a utility room, and an ensuite bathroom and it's going to give us a bigger hall than before. What do you keep in your hall please? Coats, shoes, wet weather stuff and dog paraphernalia will be in a boot room. The building work has turned the house into a flipping tip. I can't think what we're going to keep in the hall. I'm sure it will fill up in time but I want to know what to expect to go there.

A large trunk that has warm blankets, hammock etc. Above it coats etc. One of the window walls is covered in plants floor to ceiling. Round the corner, shoe racks, table for landline telephone (!), keys and other misc stuff. Oh and not forgetting cat litter tray!

Wimpeyspread · 06/04/2024 16:40

Grandfather clock, display cabinet, boiler cupboard with printer on top, phone, modem, piano and stool, bench seat, filing cabinet, shoes (it’s a big hall), kids graduation photos

JJathome · 06/04/2024 16:40

What size is the hall? Mine has a bench and a long antique console table, with a lamp on, some flowers and an Alexa show. On the bottom of the table is the router, landline etc and a jar we keep keys etc in.

we don’t keep shoes and coats in the front hall but at the back door mini hall space.

fussychica · 06/04/2024 16:41

Just a pair of shoes each by the door and a very small console table with baskets for keys etc with a plant and DSs matriculation photo on. No room for anything else.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 06/04/2024 16:42

Coat stand, shoe rack & a pile of cardboard boxes for the cat to jump in & out of.

Goldenhandcuffs · 06/04/2024 16:42

My hall has a console table with a couple of drawers in them. Dish on it where car keys are kept, in drawers are random things like spare batteries and tape measures but quite empty really. On it is also a lamp and a plant. Hall isn’t somewhere we keep anything much, I like it being clear and everything has its place elsewhere.

Ours, off kitchen, has a chest of drawers one side that holds useful stuff including hats and gloves, dog leads and collars, spare light bulbs, batteries and lots of Tupperware. There are usually flowers and a string of fairy lights in a big Venetian glass (it leaks) on top. A wooden box for dog towels that is also a seat for lacing shoes, and a shell case that holds umbrellas.

shellyleppard · 06/04/2024 17:10

Large IKEA shoe rack, the cats litter box, the hoover and steam cleaner lol

abracadabra1980 · 06/04/2024 17:22

Antique pine chest of drawers-drawers for hats, gloves, scarves, dog stuff, crap, etc...
Cast iron freestanding coat stand that is invisible as always covered in about 20 coats.
About 10 x pairs of wellies walking boots and shoes.
Old rocking horse.

HeddaGarbled · 06/04/2024 17:24

Waist level bookcase with photos on top.

Churchview · 06/04/2024 17:30

Nothing. It's too small.

Same here.

We've got an edwardian narrow cupboard with a shelf inside. The shelf has dog poo bags, dog treats and a square basket for hats, gloves and scarves. Under the shelf has wellies, walking boots and a bag of wild bird seed.

On top is a wooden bowl for keys, a vase that may or may not have flowers in it, a glass bowl with some crystals to attract money and luck into the house (well you never know). The post also gets put there.

At the end there are some brass hooks for the dog leads.

Above it is a large mirror to make the hall a bit lighter and bigger, and to check your teeth for spinach before you leave the house.

Opposite the cupboard is a bentwood hat stand for coats and umbrellas.

There is a rug which when the doorbell goes or the post comes, the dog hits at speed and propels himself into the door in a ball of fur and fury. (All mouth and trousers, tbh, but he is a good deterrent to unwanted visitors)

And that's it. Not much room for anything else. Oh there is also a lavender plug in air freshener, in a vain attempt to stop the house smelling like a dogs home, which of course, it is.

Horsesontheloose · 06/04/2024 17:59

Eh? Shoes and coats. It's a hall. My life is clearly very simple!

CheckeredAliceBand · 06/04/2024 18:01

Mine has 2 mirrors, coats hooks, shoe storage and laundry under the stairs.

NewName24 · 06/04/2024 18:03

Generally various piles of stuff that is on its way somewhere, waiting to be picked up on the way out.
Also, coats, house keys, a pair of crocs people put on to go out to the bin or to get something out of the car, umbrellas.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 06/04/2024 18:34

Shoes on a shoe rack, seasonal coats, a lidded basket of scarves, gloves, hats, umbrellas etc.., another lidded basket of shopping bags, an armchair to sit on for changing shoes and a console table with a clear top for dumping whatever you just brought into the house when you get home. Robot hoover parked under it who keeps the rug and doormat nice and clean.
There is a large mirror over the console table.
Drawer in the hall has keys, torches, head torches, charging stuff and power banks.
At the bottom of the stairs there is also a stair basket which is filled with odds and ends that need taking upstairs.

Loopsielou · 06/04/2024 18:47

Just a chair and a cabinet for the keys. It's a big hall but I like it to be kept clear

BintuBombatu · 06/04/2024 18:52

Very little as we’re quite minimalist, and have a utility room with lots of storage so a lot of things you’ve mentioned/dog paraphrased.

It’s quite a large hall and I have a small plant stand with three plants, and a console table that houses a lamp, and ornamental fish, and usually a candle.

There’s a coatrack under the staircase.

jackles · 06/04/2024 18:57

Mirror, barometer, chair, umbrella stand, grandfather clock. A small table that held masks and hand sanitiser during Covid. Calendar, pachinko machine, doormat.

BigMandyHarris · 06/04/2024 19:00

A console table with drawers for various bits and pieces.
A large plant
A vase
A mirror
A stunning large painting
A coat stand for visitors costs only

BigMandyHarris · 06/04/2024 19:01

…… and a chair!

isitbananatimealready · 06/04/2024 19:01

A guitar amp with a travel blanket folded on top of it, a set of shelves with storage boxes for winter hats, gloves etc, and another one for OS maps. Several bottles of wine in the corner. DH's walking boots on a tray on the floor, beside which is a trug containing gardening tools. It doesn't belong in the hall actually, but it's been there for weeks now. A variety of umbrellas, some coats hanging on a coat rack on the wall, a collection of shopping bags (we keep them in the hall so they are easy to grab on the way out shopping), and there's also the meter cupboard, on top of which are several houseplants.

It is a very small hall.

catwithflowers · 06/04/2024 19:05

Ours is weird as it's quite central to the house (two entrances, the main door which no one uses and the boot room). The hall is large so we have a big rug with a large round table and 4 chairs, a small side table with a vase and flowers on it, a large chest which contains all the family games, a bookcase and a large log burner. It needs to be furnished otherwise it would look odd and cavernous.

catwithflowers · 06/04/2024 19:06

Ha! I've just realised I used the word large four times in that post 🙈🙈
