2 dishwashers?!

We’re re-doing our kitchen and a few people have mentioned to us recently about 2 dishwashers being game changers and we have the room - is it ridiculous or genius?!

I suppose it depends on how many people you have at home? Perhaps a tad excessive if there's just two if you but I can see the attraction if there are more of you and you have the space.

HamstersAreMyLife · 18/11/2023 18:11

I decided against it. It seemed too messy and I don't really understand how this helps save time tbh. Friends say it does but I prefer the extra space for a larger oven. We don't put the dishwasher on every day though so maybe it would be better if there's more than 4 people using it

Woush · 18/11/2023 18:11

Do you have space?

Personally I'd find two washing machines more useful than two dishwashers. But I guess that's utility room rather than kitchen.

I mean, if you have oodles of space then by all means have two dishwashers. But even though we are a big family, I can't see what difference two dishwashers would make

InTheRainOnATrain · 18/11/2023 18:13

We have 2 and I love it! For every day use it means nothing ends up sat in the sink because you can stack one whilst the other is running. When you have people over for a meal then it means you can also get all the pans, oven dishes in etc as well as plates. When you have parties it can blitz glases.

Lavender14 · 18/11/2023 18:15

I think it depends on how many people you're going to host on a daily basis. I run a centre with about 11 people in it per day and we do one (sometimes two) runs of the dishwasher, one after breakfast and one after lunch. If you're hosting a lot or have a big family then might be worth it but if not surely the temptation is then to leave dirty stuff in them for longer because you've more space for dirty stuff? Making emptying and putting away a bigger chore?

PortalooSunset · 18/11/2023 18:16

We had it in a workplace kitchen and it was great.
Dh thinks a dishwasher is a more logical way of storing crockery but I'm not convinced by that.

I suspect that even if we had 2 teen/young adult dc would still leave dirty dishes in the sink/ on top of the dishwasher though.

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 18/11/2023 18:23

I suppose if you regularly have a kitchen full of dishes while the dishwasher is running then it would be useful.
Ours gets emptied in the morning, filled throughout the day and on in the evening. In the rare occasions there's a few bits and bobs that don't fit in they get washed by hand.

Yes!

This is what I’m thinking - we’re a family of 4 (with teenagers who use a fresh glass for every drink of water) and it goes on twice a day but still stuff sits on the side, and the thought of hosting and not having to finish off the clear up in the morning….

Ridiculous IMO

CMOTDibbler · 18/11/2023 18:29

We've just done our kitchen and have two dishwashers. Dh was a bit sceptical about it, but now he is totally on board. There's never any dirty dishes on the side now, and no stress about things appearing after the dishwasher goes on.

FrenchandSaunders · 18/11/2023 18:30

Do you empty the clean one or just help yourself from it and then put it straight into the other one?

Peoniesandcats · 18/11/2023 18:33

I would if I had the space and money! And two washing machines/dryer in the house

MrsCarson · 18/11/2023 18:33

We only ever had one. Even when we had two adults, two teen boys who ate like a horse and one small girl. I ran it every day no fail. It kept up fine. I would empty it in time for tea, and start reloading after tea.

MaggieFS · 18/11/2023 18:33

I would prioritise a lot of other things first, such as two ovens, plenty of pan drawers and pull out larder cupboards. But if I still had space, then I definitely would.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 18/11/2023 18:37

Just the two of us at home but we’re quite social and often have people over. We’re open plan and have two dishwashers. I don’t ever run a dishwasher that isn’t full and I always use the lengthy economic wash. I save on water, electricity, dishwasher tablets/rinse aid and salt. I am always able to completely clear up, there are never dishes waiting to be loaded and; big bonus if one of my dishwashers packs up I will at least have one.
My husband took some persuading but is now completely converted.

Floralnomad · 18/11/2023 18:37

We have 1 and it’s plenty . I pack it during the day , husband empties it before breakfast , there are 3 sometimes 4 of us and I can’t imagine why I’d need 2 unless I didn’t want to empty it .

Twiglets1 · 18/11/2023 18:47

A bit unnecessary for a family of 4 in my opinion but who cares? Up to you!

PortalooSunset · 18/11/2023 18:48

FrenchandSaunders · 18/11/2023 18:30

In our work kitchen we'd have one for clean and one for dirty. Take a mug out of one, use it and put it in the other. Flip over sign on the front of each saying clean or dirty.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 18/11/2023 18:49

If you have a big enough kitchen and don't need extra storage etc..... then it's your money do what you want. I would prefer 2 washing machines personally but I don't find it a massive faff to empty the dishwasher in the morning and fill it up over a day. We don't hoat often enough to warrant 2 dishwasher and I don't even space for a tumble dryer in the kitchen! To me my priority is always storage to keep the worktops as clear as possible.

RandomMess · 18/11/2023 18:53

They are just cupboards that wash their own contents so you don't really lose space by getting 2.

I was gutted I didn't have room in ours due to it being small and internal corners Sad

Everyone I know who has 2, including someone now on her own has zero regrets. You rarely have to empty anything out of them.

sexnotgenders · 18/11/2023 18:55

Two dishwashers?!?! I mean, how many kitchen items are people actually using? Seems a bit nuts to me (and we're a family of 4). If space wasn't an issue I'd rather the extra oven space, general storage or at a push a second washing machine. I'd even choose an extra freezer above a second dishwasher (but then I have a one cup and one glass a day rule in my house - you just reuse, rinsing as required)

CrochetedOwl · 18/11/2023 19:01

We are a family of 6 and most evenings cook for 7-8 so hell yes if I could fit in an extra dishwasher I would! But I would prioritise a much larger oven first.

Citygirlrurallife · 18/11/2023 19:13

Food for thought Thankyou - probably like a lot of things you don’t miss what you don’t have but once you have it you can’t live without it!

I suppose it is a workaround for laziness.
