If you were a young family and had a budget of £250k and were looking for a detached house with a garden and parking, minimum 2 bedrooms, maximum 4 bedrooms, where would you look to buy? Anywhere in England

Depends what lifestyle you are looking for A house is a house but it your daily life for now and the future which counts

I'd go to the North East - Durham / Newcastle area. The east of the country is drier than the west, you've got good transport links (main east coast Edinburgh - London trainline, Newcastle airport, the A1), and beaches and countryside on not far away.

Some excellent suggestions here, and places I'd never have thought of which is great! Thanks 😊

Far more interesting than your headline OP, I want to know how life has brought anyone to a place where they'd live anywhere at all within the UK. Doesn't the family in this scenario have one single person they'd like to be near? That's very sad if so.

This is Property/DIY not Relationships!

I second (third?) the North East but I'm biased as I'm originally from there and would love to move back. I prefer north of the Tyne (Newcastle, North Tyneside, south Northumberland) to the south but anywhere is nice.

Can confirm my part of the NW has S.A.D. inducing weather.

That said, my LL tells me she's never seen such a grim summer, and she has been here since 1976.

If you want to go south west OP, you will get the odd modern detached house in places like Yeovil and Taunton in budget, might need a bit of updating but nothing radical- usually a 3 bedder - I just did a quick check

You would find something to suit in the North East/ North Yorkshire. Teesside/ north York moors national park have some lovely houses well within your price range. Potential to even pick up something with land if that was in your sights.

North Durham/ Newcastle/ Northumberland also has some good areas with good prices.

Holmfirth or surrounding villages

You'd be lucky to find a 4bdr detached near Holmfirth for less than 250k. I live nearby and the 3 bdr semi next door to me has just sold for £310

gotomomo · 26/10/2023 20:42

Teeside/County Durham it's feasible just

A bit patronising. And she didn’t say the UK anyway.

I live on the Wirral - areas vary a lot in type and price. You’d be hard pushed to get a 4 bed detached for £250,000. The ‘nicer’ areas would be considerably more and the other areas just don’t have any/many detached houses. There would be the odd new estate randomly built which may have though. More likely to get a 3 bed semi for that.

e.g. I sold a 4 bed terraced house ( no drive/ postage stamp garden) last year for £220,000 - not a posh area but a popular one due to proximity to beach/park/leisure facilities. A 4 bed detached would have been around the £300,000 mark at least.

Can you buy a detached house for £250k?!

You'd get a one bed flat for that here....

I live in Cornwall. A 3 bed detached house in our area will set you back £400k+

lizzy8230 · 26/10/2023 21:57

Wow those north east prices are incredible. A comparable property where I am would be 3 x that much

The handful of three bed detached houses in our village range from £695k to £850k.

Currently in a three bed semi and not moving anytime soon as can't afford or cope with the eye watering prices.

DoratheFlora · 27/10/2023 12:05

In fact, have just checked and these are the price ranges for a three detached nearby:-
1 mile - £595k to £1,295,000
3 miles £390k to £1,500,000
5 miles £390k to £1,750,000

I kid you not. I love it here but the prices make me want to cry.

Small wonder house prices in Cornwall are currently being hit so hard.
