If you were a young family and had a budget of £250k and were looking for a detached house with a garden and parking, minimum 2 bedrooms, maximum 4 bedrooms, where would you look to buy? Anywhere in England

You’d get quite a lot for your money in North Wales / Cheshire borders. I noticed recently property in County Durham was really cheap

googledidnthelp · 25/10/2023 21:36

You'd get that in some areas of Lincolnshire.

Seaside3 · 25/10/2023 21:43

Parts of Cumbria, but unlikely to be detached. Ulverston and kendal are nice places for young families.

Hartlepool properties. We have a lot of incomers moving here because our property prices are low in comparison to the rest of the country. I used to do training in the London area and always took a local property newspaper to show my trainees how much more you get for your money in the beautiful North East. However in those days we had our own ambulance station, three hospitals and a fire station. We're fairly decimated in those facilities now, but it's still a lovely friendly place to live. My top tip for looking at any area is to find local facebook groups and ask about any road you're considering buying in - locals are brutally honest!

Far more interesting than your headline OP, I want to know how life has brought anyone to a place where they'd live anywhere at all within the UK. Doesn't the family in this scenario have one single person they'd like to be near? That's very sad if so.

PickAChew · 25/10/2023 22:27

As for how I came to Durham, I came up to the Northeast 35 years ago for university then, in my 30s, married a miner's son so moved down from Tyneside. Have lived in the city for 6 years and love how much we have in walking distance. It really came into its own during the pandemic as it's such a green little city but has lots of decent supermarkets.

Low Fell, Gateshead. So much wonderful amenities for a young family. It's not the warmest climate, but has everything else going for it. Countryside, seaside, culture, shopping, good housing, parks, schools, activities etc!!

Yocal · 25/10/2023 23:42

Check out Burnley. Lot's of detached houses under £250k.

It's underated as a town. I love the place. Beautiful parks and Lot's of countryside all around.

I will have a look at rightmove and find you a good example

We don't know anything about OP's circumstances. It is talking out of turn to tell her it's very sad.

She might have no family for tragic reasons. They might be all just plain awful. But it is certainly not anybodies place to comment on. She just wants to know where to buy a detached family home for £250k

Zoomie1 · 26/10/2023 00:07

Those new builds are awful....souless

If you're wanting outstanding schools, Ripon Grammar is voted the best in the country, or certainly has been.

Ripon is a beautiful market town next door to Harrogate. So you are getting the location and the detached house with garden and parking. You are also on the door step of Studley Royal. Google it to see how gorgeous that is.

I didn't think you'd be able to get a detached house here sub £250k, but here you go.

Check out this 3 bedroom detached bungalow for sale on Rightmove

3 bedroom detached bungalow for sale in Cypress Gardens, Ripon, HG4 for £250,000. Marketed by Hunters, Ripon

KnickersOfDoom · 26/10/2023 02:04

Ripon or Shrewsbury would get my vote, safe areas for children developing independence. Also near beautiful countryside.

KnickersOfDoom · 26/10/2023 02:06

I’d consider areas of wales too.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/10/2023 02:13

I would also go for the Wirral in that situation (although the better bits in my opinion will come in well over that ) I don't live in that area but know it well, attractive, has coast and easy for Liverpool , Chester and Manchester for airports etc and bigger shopping.

KievLoverTwo · 26/10/2023 02:34

Seconding Ripon. It's very charming. Be warned though, iirc parts of it sometimes flood and it's had almost 90 sinkholes over the last 100 years! It's also nice to have access to pretty buzzy places like Harrogate and York from, the very charming Thirsk, and so many picture perfect postcard villages I cannot begin to name.

Paramummy3 · 26/10/2023 03:25

North east (Leeds, hull, Grimsby) or north west (Blackburn, Southport, Maghull) that’s a realistic price for at least a lovely 3 double bed detached

Oyen · 25/10/2023 23:52

Blackpool

Err... well Blackpool is very cheap, but OP should take a look at the sex offenders register before thinking further. Someone was telling me about it the other day. I thought maybe she was exaggerating. Doesn't look like it.

There are nice areas nearby, eg Bispham, but 250k will probs buy a modest semi, not detached.

WinterDipper · 26/10/2023 07:56

It’s sad my first thought was no way can you find that when 10years ago you could maybe find 1 or 2 do upppers for that in my southern location but now zilch yet it’s still a huge amount of money. What has gone so wrong with our economy that that is out of reach for most without a 30year crippling bank loan yet we normalise it.
