If you were a young family and had a budget of £250k and were looking for a detached house with a garden and parking, minimum 2 bedrooms, maximum 4 bedrooms, where would you look to buy? Anywhere in England

We live in a village just outside Doncaster and that would be feasible.

We actually chose the area for schools and transport links (close to East Coast mainline and easy access to A1, M1, M18 and M62)

Cumberland.

Your money will stretch a long way in Middlesbrough and County Durham. Newton Aycliffe up there seems to have a lot of what you describe currently for sale.

I can't say either of them have a rep for being wonderful places to live, but if we are talking decent bricks and mortar, you can probably achieve a reasonable quality house that was built in the last twenty years in both those places.

Darlington has a bit more going on, prices vary wildly. Most expensive in the West. Very reasonably priced villages on the outskirts, many characterful properties (with dreadful energy efficiency).

Outskirts of leeds , somewhere like Wakefield, good commuting links to tons of places but affordable and nice countryside nearby

I've found 42 houses that match your criteria - although they are all three bedrooms, no four bedroomed - in Wirral.

Wirral is slotted in between Liverpool and North Wales, handy for Chester too.

Teesdale

Another one on the Wirral. This is a really nice location.

Meadowdog · 25/10/2023 20:41

The Wirral is lovely, great idea.

CherryBlossom321 · 25/10/2023 20:43

The north west generally.

PurpleFuschia4 · 25/10/2023 20:46

Is Wirral an expensive place to live?

Suffolk, beautiful part of the country.

DoratheFlora · 25/10/2023 20:54

Can you buy a detached house for £250k?!

You'd get a one bed flat for that here....

Our house is a 3bed detached in a nice town and is less than that.

Edited

No it’s fine. Petrol prices here are very similar to everywhere across the NW. Decent public transport too. Easy access to Chester, Liverpool and North Wales. Nice mix of urban and rural, couple of nice beaches. It’s a bit flat for an ex-West Yorkshire person but on the whole a nice place to live.

WorriedMillie · 25/10/2023 21:01

I’d head to the NE :)

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 25/10/2023 21:02

Nunthorpe in Middlesbrough has 4 bed detached in the £250-300k range.

Whalewatchers · 25/10/2023 21:04

Personally I'd rather a semi detached in a nicer town/location!

Been in a semi for years and years and very happy. Would seldom know we were attached to anyone, but I realise it is the luck of the draw!

Definitely luck of the draw - we're currently in a semi and the neighbours we're attached to are bloody awful (the neighbours before them were so lovely and quiet but these have made us want need a detached!!)

Ah! We are south of MK! 😂

Cowsontheloose · 25/10/2023 21:28

Not to everyone's taste but I live in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I personally live on the cusp of both Wakefield and Huddersfield.
Short drive to Sheffield or Leeds. I really like it here. Loads of house for your money

newwings · 25/10/2023 21:30

Holmfirth or surrounding villages

FallingAutumnLeaf · 25/10/2023 21:32

You'd achieve that in the nicer bits of teesside.
As in 4 bed detached, garden, garage, good/outstanding schools and vhanfe from 250k.
