Which would you give up? Tumble Dryer or Proper Freezer

So we only have enough room in our little flat for either a Tumble Dryer or a Proper sized Freezer.

If we have a Tumble dryer, we will have a fridge with two shelves for a freezer at the top. If we go without the Tumble dryer we can have a full sized fridge and full sized freezer. Of course we could get a washer dryer, but have always found the dryers to be lacking.

Which would you go for?

Get a washer dryer. Yes they aren’t as good, but your other option (if you choose the freezer) is no dryer at all, so it would be better than nothing.

Pkhsvd · 26/07/2023 16:41

Have you got DC? I’d go for the freezer. I only got a tumble dryer after having 2 DC and rarely use it due to the cost. Much better to have the freezer space and be able to bulk buy and freeze extras

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/07/2023 16:42

Could you stack a tumble dryer above the washing machine? You can get the proper brackets to make it safe.
Then you can keep both 😊

Giantwindows · 26/07/2023 16:42

Have you got alternative space for drying clothes?

reast · 26/07/2023 16:43

No it's a small flat, so we only have one drying rack, which I hate having out. No space to stack washer on top of dryer as the space is under the work surface.

Go for the freezer. I’ve always found washer dryer combos are fine actually so long as you don’t over stuff them and remember the drying capacity will always be less than the washing capacity. So I’d have no problem with that unless you have 3 kids so have to do a lot of laundry.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/07/2023 16:46

Is there a cupboard you could put a heated airer in?

LobsterCrab · 26/07/2023 16:54

I'd go for the freezer personally.

JadeSeahorse · 26/07/2023 16:57

Personally I couldn't manage without a good freezer - we have 2 in our garage.😊

As much as I wouldn't like to manage without a tumble dryer, I would sacrifice this as I have a good sized airing cupboard, an excellent dehumidifier and am quite happy to iron where necessary.

gallop17 · 26/07/2023 17:07

Dryer for me, would drive me mental having racks out. We have been used to having limited freezer space for years, so much so despite having an extra one in the garage now it's barely used, I guess you organise food and cook to the appliances you have.

mast0650 · 26/07/2023 17:14

For us, tumble dryer, definitely. We only have a washer dryer. We did that in order to have a second fridge in the utility for drinks. We actually have a large enough utility that we could have both, but it would have involved messing with the units. We hardly use the dryer at all and it's no problem. Can't imagine not having a decent sized freezer!

On the other hand, it is a lifestyle thing. I can imagine if you live in a small house with little drying space and tend to pick up shopping very frequently, you might prefer a good dryer and no freezer.

HandScreen · 26/07/2023 17:18

I'd keep the tumble dryer. Look into getting a taller fridge freezer, which has room for a good sized freezer compartment (like a 60/40 or 70/30 arrangement).

And/or get a washer/dryer. They're great these days.

frazzlerazzle · 26/07/2023 17:24

My freezer generally only contains ice, peas, vodka and ice lollies and we did without a tumble dryer for about 10 years, bought one in the winter as we updated the utility room and have only used it about five times.
For me they are both 'nice to haves' rather than essentials but I think the freezer would win because of the ice for my gin!

Whataretheodds · 26/07/2023 17:24

I had a similar choice to make and I decided to keep the freezer. I use it for ice, gin, peas, prepped veg, batch-cooked dishes, ice cream and fish fingers.

I previously had a washer-dryer and used the dryer very occasionally. I don't like having washing on display but time it overnight and if I had the right dimensions I'd get one of the pulleys that comes down from the ceiling.

Heated airer would also cut down on washing time.

Sewingdufus · 26/07/2023 18:19

For me it would always be a tumble drier rather than a freezer.

Circethemagician · 26/07/2023 18:27

Freezer.
I’ve stopped using my tumble dryer since I got a dehumidifier.

Circethemagician · 26/07/2023 18:28

I meant keep the freezer, give up the tumble dryer!

elderflowerandpomelo · 26/07/2023 18:30

i hâte dryers so it’s be easy for me. But you hate airers! So it seems an easy answer for you!

cocksstrideintheevening · 26/07/2023 18:30

Never had a tumble dryer, never been a problem.

elderflowerandpomelo · 26/07/2023 18:31

Tho now I think about it, isn’t this a question of fridge space? Can you manage w that tiny a fridge?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/07/2023 18:32

Freezer. And reconsider washer/dryer. They are better than they used to be and handy for sheets, towels etc.

MeinKraft · 26/07/2023 18:38

We don't have dryer at all, family of 4 - we use a pulley maid. I've lived without a decent freezer also and it was terrible, we spent so much money because we couldn't just chuck some freezer food in the oven or save any leftovers.

MeinKraft · 26/07/2023 18:41

You could always put the tumble dryer in your bedroom. I wanted to do this because I figured it would keep the bedroom toasty, built in white noise Grin and the clothes would be right there when I need them! But DH wouldn't go for it Sad

Zezet · 26/07/2023 19:02

In the UK I'd keep the tumble dryer. Might prefer the freezer if I were in a hotter country.

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2023 19:04

I’d keep the tumble dryer for sure! We hardly use out freezer for anything, have got one of those big American double door ones and the freezer is basically empty.
I don’t use my tumble dryer much these days but I wouldn’t want to be without it as it’s so handy.
