Which would you give up? Tumble Dryer or Proper Freezer

reast · 26/07/2023 16:39

So we only have enough room in our little flat for either a Tumble Dryer or a Proper sized Freezer.

If we have a Tumble dryer, we will have a fridge with two shelves for a freezer at the top. If we go without the Tumble dryer we can have a full sized fridge and full sized freezer. Of course we could get a washer dryer, but have always found the dryers to be lacking.

Which would you go for?

I’ve never had a tumble dryer (family of 4) but a big freezer is essential

PimpMyFridge · 26/07/2023 19:05

My washer dryer is great! So I'd do that and have a freezer.

cariadlet · 26/07/2023 19:07

I've never had a tumble drier and never missed having one but would struggle without a freezer.

Geneticsbunny · 26/07/2023 19:09

Could you pue a ceiling airer in the bathroom? I would rather have a proper freezer but I like cooking and freezing things down.

TizerorFizz · 26/07/2023 19:13

My DD has a Bosch washer dryer. It’s pretty good. It’s a smaller load for drying but it works very well. It’s a good compromise. Washes very well. She has a full size FF in a small flat so exactly the same scenario. It’s the best combination and does help reduce the drying rack dilemma.

notanicepersonapparently · 26/07/2023 21:01

I did manage without either for many years but if you don’t have any outside space to dry clothes I would choose the tumble dryer. I’m assuming that as you have a flat then you are relatively near shops and don’t have to keep massive amounts of food in stock.

sanityisamyth · 26/07/2023 21:22

Love my washer-dryer. Get a washer-dryer and a freezer! Win win!

You can't dry clothes where people are shitting and pissing, that's horrible.

Get a washer drier and a freezer for heaven's sake. This is an absurd question.

MissGroves · 26/07/2023 22:21

I would ditch the freezer and have the dryer if I could only have one. Clothes maids everywhere would drive me insane, I limit only to the maid that which can’t be put in the dryer. To compromise and have both could you put the dryer in your bedroom? (This is what we did when we didn’t have the space anywhere else.

For us, tumble dryer, definitely. We only have a washer dryer. We did that in order to have a second fridge in the utility for drinks. We actually have a large enough utility that we could have both, but it would have involved messing with the units. We hardly use the dryer at all and it's no problem. Can't imagine not having a decent sized freezer!

On the other hand, it is a lifestyle thing. I can imagine if you live in a small house with little drying space and tend to pick up shopping very frequently, you might prefer a good dryer and no freezer.

How many drinks do you need chilling that you so desperately need an extra fridge for at the expense of other things?

With my family I'd ditch something else before a tumble dryer or freezer but we're 3 adults and an incontinent 17yo so lots of food and laundry.

People don't piss on the ceiling.

CraftyGin · 26/07/2023 22:25

I don't really use my freezer, so that would be easy to give up.

It's useful, but certainly not essential. For drinks and also an overflow fridge when we have lots of people round.

It was my husband's choice. He does absolutely all the laundry. I never touch the laundry at all, so was perfectly happy to leave it to him if he wanted to swap out the tumble drier. We very rarely tumble anything.

SophiaElise · 26/07/2023 22:34

My freezer is never full but I can't imagine life without my tumble dryer... so that'd be my pick.

bloodyfootprint · 26/07/2023 22:34

PickAChew · 26/07/2023 22:24

People don't piss on the ceiling.

They don't need to for it to end up there. Ever flushed a toilet? Ever walked into a bathroom and recoiled at the stench left by the previous user?

I mean, you do you but I presume the OP doesn't want to walk around with urine- and faeces-infested clothing.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/07/2023 22:35

Having had the cold, damp flat and the smell of mould following me everywhere - in a tiny flat, from trying to dry clothes in winter, I'd say tumble dryer every time.

pilates · 27/07/2023 10:10

I would give up the tumble dryer

SaltyGod · 27/07/2023 10:13

For us the freezer. I very rarely use the tumble drier, perhaps 4 times a year. We use the freezer daily.

Hazelnuttella · 27/07/2023 10:14

Definitely get a washer dryer. Do some research and get a good one. I like my beko one personally.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 27/07/2023 10:24

Get a freezer and a washer dryer. Any dryer is better than no dryer which you will not have if you go for the freezer. We have a bosch washer dryer that is fine for 3 of us.

Neekoh · 27/07/2023 10:24

Keep the freezer and get a washer/dryer. Yes they're not as good as separate ones but something is definitely better than nothing, especially in a flat.

Do you think the poo and wee are going to jump up and land on the washing? You must use your bathroom in a very odd way. People brush their teeth and wash to get clean in a bathroom so how could they do that properly if everything in. Bathroom is covered in excrement?

If someone flush without closing the lid then absolutely this happens! Where the spray gets depends on the layout and size of your bathroom but a lot of toothbrushes must be pretty gross if you think about it. When we redid our bathrooms we went for wall hung toilets and positioned the flush low so you can’t actually flush them without closing the lid.

LibertyLily · 27/07/2023 11:28

In a flat with no outside drying space, I'd get rid of the freezer and keep the tumble dryer.

That said, I've never had a tumble dryer personally, although years ago when we owned a flat we did have a washer dryer - but it was awful so I'd be reluctant to go down that route.

We only have a tall fridge with freezer compartment on top (it's the old style Smeg that we've had for 20+ years) and that's all we need as we only use the freezer for peas, occasionally fish, ice cubes and lollies/ice cream. When DS was living at home we had a secondary under counter freezer, but tbh it was never particularly full, so for us a large freezer has never been a necessity.

Peony654 · 27/07/2023 11:30

I’ve never had a tumble dryer and never felt the need for one. Get a heated dryer from Lakeland, much cheaper to run. A freezer is worth its weight in gold, and will save you money in batch cooking and frozen fruit/veg.
