If you view a house but see a hot tub next door...

Are you going to think twice about a purchase. Row of town houses, close together, small gardens. Massive hot tub just the other side in neighbours garden, clearly in regular use. Would it make you think twice about noise.

Don't buy the house.

A friend had a neighbour with a hot tub in the garden. Turned out the house was a brothel.

soboredtonight · 28/01/2023 17:44

I've never shagged my DH in mine!

larkstar · 28/01/2023 17:46

Yes - definitely put me off - unless it was well away from the house and at the bottom of the garden and screened off perhaps.

tangerinenightmare · 28/01/2023 17:43

I've heard my neighbours shagging in theirs, so it's a big no from me!

Well, on that basis, I'd have to look for a neighbouring house without windows.

Bad enough having excited high pitched constant kid noise in Summer, but they will grow up! However having adults playing in a sex pond aswell, that's a no from me!

😂

We have one but we’re genuinely really lucky to have a butt load of space so it’s about 2/3rd of acre from nearest persons. It’s also wood fired without any motors or owt. Like someone up thread said, we barely use it now. Went nuts on it for the first year and then forgot about it.
I think if I saw one of those square, humming light-up jobbies right by a fence, I might think twice.
We used to live on an estate and it’s very close quarters indeed! Neighbours can ruin your summer! Mine had a trampoline and it was so springy!!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 28/01/2023 17:47

Our neighbour has one and it’s up against the fence right by the corner of our house. It’s never been an issue. We can’t hear it when the lid is on and they sometimes sit and chat in it but I sometimes sit in my garden and chat so it’s no different. It’s never loud enough to hear what they’re saying.

ClaraThePigeon · 28/01/2023 17:48

stop reading mumsnet where you hear of the odd crank.

It isn't just a MN thing. A ten second Google reveals literally hundreds of threads over dozens of forums on the subject and some of us have had lived experience also. Your hot tub might not hum but plenty do. Personally I'll continue to make a point of avoiding almost anything that suggests that people will spend a lot of time in their garden, especially in the evening/at night because I like a very quiet life.

SelinaKant · 28/01/2023 17:48

No, I would never buy a house if the neighbour had a hot tub. it would make me think of long summer nights wrecked by pissed up, shrieking people. I wouldn't buy a town house with a giant trampoline in the garden either - it shows the neighbours are selfish bastards.

CalpolDependant · 28/01/2023 17:48

Can confirm I have shagged in mine. Sorry.

ajandjjmum · 28/01/2023 17:50

For us, winter is the best time to use the hot tub. Sitting in it with a glass of wine in the snow - beautiful.

Watching the space station go overhead. Guessing where the planes are going to.

Was brilliant when the DC started to drive themselves to school, and we lost all that 'chat' time. We'd sit and chat in the hot tub with them, they'd be relaxed as were we, and we could all keep up with each other's lives.

DH will occasionally go in for half an hour before dinner.

DS did have one get together before Christmas, when he and half a dozen friends were chatting until the early hours. They loved it, and our neighbours didn't hear them, although they are a way away.

Funnily enough, although the DC have always used it with their friends, DH and I never have invited our friends to join us.

No shagging allowed though!

stripedsox · 28/01/2023 17:51

Chlorine doesn't have a smell, the smell comes from the chemicals reactting with persperation, urine, body oils make up and the like.
When I found that out several years ago it put me off swimming pools, jacuzzis and hot tubs for life.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 28/01/2023 17:52

”Given the kind of people that tend to buy and use hot tubs, yes I’d absolutely avoid it.”

haha, I work in a hospital and 4 of the exec team have hot tubs. I can’t think that the kind of person you’re referring to is any of them - quiet, well educated, highly paid professionals. Just mn snobbery.

It's a waste of a hot tub if you haven't!!!

I lived overseas when I was younger & had a built in jaccuzi, not a blow up hot tub, not overlooked, it definitely saw a lot of action!

had a huge trampoline as a child too, not in a small garden though.

SpentDandelion · 28/01/2023 17:55

Luckily you can't see my neighbours hot tub from our house/ garden, although you can hear it hum, the hum is not a problem it's the volume they shout to one another whilst in it for ages.
I hope when l move it doesn't put people off, l never thought about that.

RandomUsernameHere · 28/01/2023 17:57

I wouldn't give it a second thought, it's realistic to expect any neighbours to use their gardens, whether or not they have a hot tub! If I had a problem with this I'd be buying a detached house in the middle of a large plot.

Anjo2011 · 28/01/2023 17:57

Each to their own but I would be put off.

TenoringBehind · 28/01/2023 17:57

I wouldn’t consider buying a house with a hot tub next door. I’d stop the viewing the moment I spotted it.

redspottedmug · 28/01/2023 17:58

Run fast in the opposite direction. Our now ex-neighbours' hot tub was the final straw for us.

Sasha07 · 28/01/2023 17:58

100%. This entire row was quiet and decent regarding noise levels. Since the family a few doors down have moved in, it's hot tub party day no matter the time of year. The only neighbour who hasn't mentioned the noise is the guy who smokes weird 24/7. They've showed themselves to be the types who would be worse if you ever mentioned it to them too. Selfish arses.

Trethew · 28/01/2023 17:59

If I went to view a property and saw a hot tub and a trampoline in the garden I don’t think I’d even bother to look at the rest of the house

Mysmallgarden · 28/01/2023 18:00

That would be a definite no. You wouldn't want the extra noise.

Mouthfulofquiz · 28/01/2023 18:02

I know that anyone can put a hot tub in at any time. But my dad’s next door neighbour (row of terraced houses) has put one in and it’s awful. So loud. Of course they think it’s brilliant. Not a very considerate purchase.

BringMeTea · 28/01/2023 18:05

Not a chance I'd buy it. See also tiki 'bars'. Nope. I made sure to check when looking recently.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/01/2023 18:06

We have a pool, a hot tub, a bar in the conservatory and a trampoline. Plus the kids camp out in the summer.

According to our neighbours we are lovely and considerate.

On the plus side, if any of our neighbours were to move we will deter all the snobs.
