If you view a house but see a hot tub next door...

Are you going to think twice about a purchase. Row of town houses, close together, small gardens. Massive hot tub just the other side in neighbours garden, clearly in regular use. Would it make you think twice about noise.

Obviously that is a question for you to ask the vendors - you could ask them what they’re like if they are around on viewings? My neighbour has one and no problems at all.

You wouldn't trust a vendor on the matter, of course they would say they were fine, regardless of the facts.

Worldgonecrazy · 28/01/2023 19:02

We have one. We don’t hold raucous parties or have sex in it! Mostly use it with lights and jets turned off and looking at the stars. Our non hot tub neighbours do have loud parties but are also polite enough to forewarn all neighbours when these are happening.

I know it’s a MN crime, but I just add another zero to the number of fucks I give about that ….. or my three wood burners and second home …….

magicthree · 28/01/2023 19:05

OMG - what a miserable lot! The neighbours who live over my back fence have a trampoline, and swimming pool, the kids played outside all the time, kicked balls, climbed trees (and onto my garage roof) when they were younger, the parents have an outside area where they entertain in the evenings through to the early hours of the morning sometimes, winter and summer. When the eldest boy was a teen he had parties in the back yard. Not one of those things bothered me in the slightest. I would much rather live next to them than the judgemental killjoys on this thread!

silverclock222 · 28/01/2023 19:07

No, wouldn't put me off at all. Live and let live surely?

@Cornettoninja just a question in your view what are people allowed to do in their garden? In other countries it's normal to have outdoor kitchens and pools. Why is it so tacky to enjoy your garden in the UK!

This! Thank goodness I don't live in the UK.

Wtfhusband23 · 28/01/2023 19:15

Obviously I don't know where you live, but we typically don't have the space that others countries do. It's annoying as we are on top of each other, and in a terrace you may as well be in their garden with them.

SummerWinds · 28/01/2023 19:26

I wouldn't complain to my neighbours concerning their hot tub, but it does disturb my sleep in the summer, l have 4.30am starts, they are in it at midnight, so l think a lot of it depends on when and how they are using it.

MrsRandom123 · 28/01/2023 19:35

I wouldn’t buy. My neighbours across the back have had one a few years & i’m now desperate to move (but could end up
worse)

Chlorine doesn't have a smell, the smell comes from the chemicals reactting with persperation, urine, body oils make up and the like.
When I found that out several years ago it put me off swimming pools, jacuzzis and hot tubs for life.

@stripedsox our never smelt like chlorine (or anything) as our chemicals were properly balanced. It's a faff, but worth it.

THisbackwithavengeance · 28/01/2023 20:19

God, I'd love a hot tub.

Can't believe that people would turn down their dream house because the neighbour had a basket ball hoop.

I've never heard anything so strange.

The loud repetitive thud of basketballs hitting the ground is incredibly annoying.

Of course it does! You shouldn't be able to smell it strongly though, as then it's over-chlorinated and won't be working.

That chlorine smell is exactly what it smells like neat... before it's touched any bodies.

It wouldn’t be your dream home for long though the repetitive thudding of balls for hours a day at weekends / evenings would soon ruin that .

THisbackwithavengeance · 28/01/2023 21:10

@Floralnomad I do understand that but we have a basketball net and my son hardly uses it. Perhaps once a month if that? Would hate to think we were responsible for reducing house prices in our street Grin

Clemintina · 28/01/2023 21:11

Would totally put me off.

Floraanddougal · 28/01/2023 21:12

What do you mean clearly in regular use, there is absolutely no way to know such a thing.

LolaSmiles · 28/01/2023 21:14

It would put me off in a small garden where houses are close together, but so would other things that suggested there's a risk of unreasonable noise levels.

freyamay74 · 28/01/2023 21:21

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

lifeinthehills · 28/01/2023 21:32

I don't think it has to put you off. Maybe they use it every weekend, or maybe they are like us and hardly use it at all? We use ours occasionally, just our family and quietly. Of course, you have no easy way of knowing which it is going to end up being.

soboredtonight · 28/01/2023 22:07

Hot tubs cost a couple of hundred quid. The fact that someone has one now wouldn't put me off. They are so cheap these days anyone can buy one 🤦🏽‍♀️

MaryDerry · 28/01/2023 22:16

Yes would be a huge put off. A house 2 doors away from us (semi detached big gardens and quiet area) and the pump is loud. Then they get in it and the bubbles start and they have to talk/shout louder .

On the plus side they have very interesting lives so it's at least a good listen for the neighbourhood.

FurierTransform · 28/01/2023 22:21

Yes, the house doesn't sound like anything remarkable or one off so I'd look elsewhere.

Mark19735 · 28/01/2023 22:40

Seems to be a lot of peasants who can only afford terraces with small gardens, but who want to enjoy the same peaceful sanctuary that actually requires the budget for a detached house with a large garden. Hyacinth Bucket would be thrilled with this thread.

Or to put it a different way there's people who are quite happy to have a smaller house and a smaller garden, know that they will be the sort of neighbour who is mindful of being in their own smaller garden and want to maximise the chance that their potential neighbours are also likely to be considerate.

Mark19735 · 28/01/2023 22:48

Well, if it isn't about the money, p'raps they should buy the neighbour's house too - that way they can uninstall the hot tub and be sure to have the peace and quiet they crave.

(Actually, Mark Zuckerberg famously did exactly that ... bought all four neighbouring properties to his own "for greater peace and quiet". I expect he probably installed a hot tub though ...)
