OMAZE house

So, I'm thinking of entering this competion. Clearly as much chance of winning as me getting an Olympic gold medal, but I keep reading that these 'amazing' houses have issues. Eg one has been massively flooded and another is so close to the cliff edge that it might be uninsurable and when it falls the owners will have a massive clear up bill. The current one is in Finsbury Park and I've even been sad enough to streetview it. Can't see any obvious issues, so why is it an OMAZE house? Please enlighten me!

Yes I saw that. Did they not get a survey before Omaze paid 2.8 for it? Or did they ignore the results? Ir would make sense if they got it for a knock down price due to location but they didn’t.

ShyMaryEllen · 27/08/2023 10:48

I wonder if he got the cash sum he wanted? I doubt it, or more people would turn down the houses rather than go through the hassle of selling them themselves, and Omaze would be stuck with lots of difficult to sell houses.

Underthesofa · 27/08/2023 19:41

Does anyone know where the new one in Devon is?

NewHouseNewMe · 28/08/2023 09:46

Can we find out what Omaze paid? They seem to like finding “distressed” or merely overpriced houses - presumably for much cheaper than originally advertised - and then quoting the original price tag as the value.
According to a local Mumsnetter, the Islington one was overpriced for that part of the area (N7) and was unsold for some time until Omaze came alone.
So I wonder what they paid for the Devon one if there are structural issues?

That’s what you would think but they seem to pay premiums for their properties. The N.London one wasn’t overpriced for the level of finish, and what they paid for it was on public record. (They paid pretty much what they valued it at.). It was still a very good deal as was the one in Fulham. But paying so much for an uninsurable cliff edge house is barmy.

NewHouseNewMe · 28/08/2023 09:59

So interestingly there isn’t an option to take a cash prize. Somehow I thought there was.
It sounds unlikely the Devon winner will get far with that angle and if it’s uninsurable will struggle to sell it. I’d say they’ll settle.

NewHouseNewMe · 28/08/2023 10:01

Well blow me down @Mirabai ! I thought they were getting them on the cheap somehow!

😳 just think - if there is no cash alternative and the property is uninsurable, unsellable, unliveable- does that mean the ‘lucky’ winners will be responsible for demolition costs, or clearance costs - if the house collapses? 😳

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 14:59

What if you can't sell it!

SweetSakura · 29/08/2023 09:32

I remember looking at that one and thinking you'd be lucky to have more than a few years before the house was in the sea.

SweetSakura · 29/08/2023 09:34

I'm guessing they paid him a fair whack as he obviously signed some kind of NDA as he's not speaking to the press about it

a1poshpaws · 02/09/2023 02:39

I'd love to know how their policy of only allowing approved and debt-free entrants to win is allowed by the Gambling Commission.

In my opinion it's appalling that Omaze are allowed to accept people's money but then refuse to award any prize because they're - presumably - f*ing snobs!

I'd far rather see a person deep in debt win a property they can either sell or rent for a sum that'd help get them out of debt pretty quickly than someone already comfortably off.

Having said that, it seems to me that they're morally though probably not legally, cheating by offering houses with the problems people on this thread have highlighted. I'm certainly going to warn off anybody I know who's thinking of buying a ticket.

megletthesecond · 02/09/2023 07:53

I think the new Devon house is in Dartmoor. So a national park with possibly loads of planning restrictions. But otherwise it doesn't seem to have too many red flags.

tanstaafl · 02/09/2023 08:06

I was going to reply to a1poshpaws but when I ‘@‘ , the name doesn’t appear.
Do I need to wait a while , or have they deregistered ?

NewHouseNewMe · 02/09/2023 08:41

I think a1poshpaws has deregistered. I do agree with the point though but imagine they’ve tried to cover it off in the T&Cs.

Still, imagine if the lottery people only gave the prizes out to those they deemed suitable. There would be uproar.

Persipan · 02/09/2023 10:32

The new Devon house is apparently Bottor Cottage, Hennock.

Gwamps · 19/10/2023 21:58

I emailed Omaze to check if they disqualify potential winners if they hold personal debt but they just sent a link to their T&C’s. I emailed again twice asking for an answer to my specific question but they’ve not replied.
I can only assume therefore that any personal debt held would disqualify me so will not buy any further tickets.

feeona123 · 19/10/2023 22:13

New Chelsea house isn’t that exciting 😆

prh47bridge · 19/10/2023 22:22

As I pointed out earlier in this thread, there is nothing in their terms and conditions that suggests they would exclude a winner due to personal debts. They specifically say that they can disqualify you if they reasonably determine that giving you the prize would reflect negatively on Omaze or the charity, or would put someone in danger. Disqualifying someone for having personal debts is so far outside this that, if they did do so, it would clearly be Wednesbury unreasonable and, in my view, would not stand up in court.

ooo I like this one - I could live there and afford it - won't cost a fortune to maintain... plus I am a sucker for the London ones

EachandEveryone · 19/10/2023 22:35

It’s Chelsea darling.

EachandEveryone · 19/10/2023 23:00

I know but still, I think its overpriced. You would have to turn the living rooms into bedrooms. Im off to look on right move 😃

TurnipMuncher · 20/10/2023 00:20

Chelsea House: https://www.zoopla.co.uk/property-history/25-ovington-street/london/sw3-2ja/63988669/

It's Grade II listed which might make amendments irritating.

The en suite bathroom is unnecessarily big for such a relatively small house. Could easily have a fourth bedroom and a semi decent family bathroom.
