OMAZE house
walkinthewoodstoday · 02/01/2023 20:42
So, I'm thinking of entering this competion. Clearly as much chance of winning as me getting an Olympic gold medal, but I keep reading that these 'amazing' houses have issues. Eg one has been massively flooded and another is so close to the cliff edge that it might be uninsurable and when it falls the owners will have a massive clear up bill. The current one is in Finsbury Park and I've even been sad enough to streetview it. Can't see any obvious issues, so why is it an OMAZE house? Please enlighten me!

@PollyPeePants - what about the costs you will be stuck with whilst waiting for it to sell? Council tax, some level of electricity and heating, insurance, possibly security to stop squatters. The lottery costs less and the prize is much bigger!
True!
As a PP says, you get £100k to cover this stuff. Would I move to London to live there if I won? Unlikely although maybe I'd do it for a couple of years for the hell of it.
But would it be nice to sell on for a couple of million or more? Yes, thanks.

Omaze is a bit of a con. They whittle down to a select few and do credit checks on you. If you have any debt etc you won't get picked.
This is true, read the terms and conditions, everyone. No idea why that's allowed but if you think you might not meet their vetting standards for a winner then don't waste your money.
Flapjackquack · 02/01/2023 21:28
@tulips27 - they also seem to have lots of vague reasons they can disqualify you. I have a mortgage and a phone contract, would these forms of credit be considered a no for them? It’s not easy to tell and you may never know you’ve been vetted and disqualified so you may continue to enter for nothing. Not sure why it’s any business of theirs if you have debt/convictions etc.
Flapjackquack · 02/01/2023 21:39
@bellac11 - Looks like it was won in October 2022.
Interestingly I looked it up and it was on the market for £6mil in 2019 then came down to £4mil then £3.25m and then it was raffled off. It’s right on the edge of a chalk cliff. They say erosion isn’t an issue but not sure I believe them.

@Londonlondon6
Not everyone has debt, but you are right that those tempted by these sorts of things are likely to have debt!
Yes that’s what I was thinking. It seems like the sort of thing that would be most tempting if you did…

This is the last listing from RightMove from this summer … obviously they’ve changed the furniture

Its worse than that
there was a thread on here and I did some digging and posted links. The entrance is ONLY by a tunnel through the cliff and then a lift up to the house. Now what would happen if say the lift malfunctions or theres a fire or an ambulance is needed, how do people get up and down into the house easily if theres a problem?
There was a problem with access with restrictions in place as part of the planning, so there is a road that leads from the back of a holiday camp at the top of the cliff but doesnt connect with the house I think. I did a lot of 'investigating' via street view and google earth!!!!
I wondered if the couple who won it have tried to sell it or whether they're living there.
walkinthewoodstoday · 02/01/2023 21:46
Just read this about the London house:
The estimated running costs for the house are £900 per month (as of 28th November 2022). We’re providing £100,000 to the winner to help them settle in.
So that's about 12k a year? How is that possible? Is council tax ridiculous in London?
Flapjackquack · 02/01/2023 21:49
@bellac11 - how on earth did that get planning permission or building control sign off?!!
@walkinthewoodstoday - council tax in London tends to be cheaper, the cheapest council tax in the country is Westminster I believe (I wonder why 🙄). Heating and electricity for a period house that size, plus council tax, insurance etc could easily reach £900 I would think.

Is that true. What do they count as “debt” anyway a car on finance? A mortgage? Are they fine with middle class debt but not with poor people debt 🤦🏼♀️
