Can’t get the link to paste from Rightmove but it’s up for £10 million and looks absolutely stunning

Really hope it gets him out of debt and he can move on with his life

@antelopevalley please understand there is no cliff and no significant erosion, there are seasonal comings and goings on the actual beach. There are buildings that are much closer to the sea, some of them are even designed so that the basements flood.

Please show me where this cliff is:

Isn't this a cliff then? It's called Chesil CLIFF house as well Grin

Taken from the coast path

You do understand that there can be a cliff at one side of a house and not at the other?

juliainthedeepwater · 22/07/2022 13:27

Yikes, it kinda screams male hubris, doesn’t it?! Also does not look at all well-designed to adapt to our changing climate on multiple fronts!

Daftasabroom · 22/07/2022 13:31

@ItsNotNormalLove that's not a cliff! It's just a bit of scree slope, they can call the place what they like. Maybe living here I have slightly different idea of what cliff is. 😉

This is a cliff:

I quite like it….

Fancy expensive houses are often sold without kitchens, bathrooms and light fittings etc. The thinking is that if you spend that much money on a house you’ll likely want your own stamp on those things so it’s pointless to put any kitchen in there which will likely be ripped out anyway

antelopevalley · 22/07/2022 13:42

A cliff does not have to be high to meet the dictionary definition of a cliff.

There is quite clearly a cliff.
I know you say there is no significant erosion, but the expensive engineering work was carried out presumably because of the threat of erosion? The climate is changing fast.

The house has amazing views, that is its selling point. But on opening the brochure I was surprised that rooms live the living room were not larger. It does come with more land than I had realised so I would want that landscaped. You can't have a traditional garden with the sea spray, but it could be much more attractive. It has access to the foreshore but that is very rocky. So I can not imagine you would spend much time down there.

Happylittlethoughts · 22/07/2022 14:00

Its feckin ugly. Agree its like air traffic control tower. Ugly folly

This is a cliff:

As its name suggests, Chesil Cliff House is built on a cliff-edge and that requires ingenuity and clever calculations. It has come to be through meticulous engineering which has anchored the house to the bed rock. This painstaking construction ensures it won’t suffer from coastal erosion.

I think it looks awful, part 1970s local library, part Tracy Island, not even the real Tracy island, the one I made from Blue Peter, which was shite.

I think because houses without a working kitchen tend to be semi-derelict wrecks that are risky for lenders.
You might be able to get a specialist broker to lend you money though.

Thank you. I was just really interested because it seems so strange.

It is a modern parable of a greedy man.

He risked everything he had, wealth, a home and even his family, to build an ostentatious house that he neither needed, nor his family wanted.

He left a huge scar on a very beautiful bit of coastland and forced local residents to look at it every day.

He doesn't deserve anyone's pity.

Yes, this.

One of the things I remember from the programme (it's a while since I've seen it) is the two kids selling off some of their stuff to help raise funds.

And then at the end it turned out the family's whole lives were changed by this build, and it still hadn't been finished.

I like it as well.

Daftasabroom · 22/07/2022 14:34

@antelopevalley they excavated back into the hill which is really sandy so very unstable which meant the berm had to be stabilised. Equally the foundations needed piling.

pd339 · 22/07/2022 14:41

I hate it. And I bet some corners were cut in getting it finished!

All that glass. It wouldn't be great in a heatwave 😬

My exact first thought too. Hopefully lots of shading will be added or incorporated

ClaudineClare · 22/07/2022 14:53

I just watched the programme, thanks for the link. It was morbidly fascinating.

For a fraction of the budget he could have refurbished the existing house into
something amazing instead of building that white elephant. I feel very sorry for his family, each year you could see his wife growing sadder and sadder. Why couldn't he have been happy with what he had?

Daftasabroom · 22/07/2022 14:54

@Chillian and estate agents are renowned for telling it exactly as it is?

You do understand that there can be a cliff at one side of a house and not at the other?

The photo is taken facing south east towards Saunton along the facade of the property which faces south west, there is no other side that faces the sea.

antelopevalley · 22/07/2022 15:07

Okay no cliff. Just stay away from the edge or you will fall a long way and probably die.

Daftasabroom · 22/07/2022 15:08

antelopevalley · 22/07/2022 13:42

A cliff does not have to be high to meet the dictionary definition of a cliff.

But it does have to made of rock and nearly vertical, Downend is about 45 degrees until gets to the reef.

Looks like a police station in Miami or somewhere similar. Nothing special to look at in my opinion. Such stunning surroundings deserve something more imaginative.

🤣 I was going to say dental office in Malibu. Hideous

mjf981 · 23/07/2022 07:35

The location is stunning. The house is not. Its just too big and white and stark. I really really don't like the house at all.

girlwhowearsglasses · 23/07/2022 10:42

I know the location really well. My DM used to play on the beach in the 50's. The location is stunning. I don't think erosion is a thing in that particular place - I know other parts of that coastline that have eroded in my lifetime and continue to do so - but not here I think- its very hard stone not soft shale or chalk.

I remember driving past when it was first fenced off for the build and wondering what was goign to be there. The PP who said 'hubris' is rght - its the most bombastic penis-representative show off house I can imaging and such a shame. I would die for the location.

Big up to Saunton Sands Hotel next door though - afternoon tea with that view...
