How many kWh of electricity do you use a day??

I know I know it’s another energy one but ours seems to have gone nuts.

im being told by British Gas that we are using over 11000 kWh of electricity every year. We don’t have electric heating. We don’t think we are particularly big users of electricity but we clearly are.

google seems to say that the average is 4000 for a detached family home. This is making me question how ours can be so large since whilst our house is quite big it isn’t full of people using power in every room.

how much do you use on average a day according to your smart meter? And how big is your house/how many in it?

About 3kwh/day - just me in a 1 bed flat, with gas heating/hot water/cooker.

Assistanttotheregionalmanager · 18/07/2022 09:46

According to our monthly bill we use 264k.0KWgh over 30 days if i’m reading it right.

SkeletonFight · 18/07/2022 09:51

6 KW a day - 2 of us in a 3 bed detached house .

CoughtheCat · 18/07/2022 09:54

We are currently using around 11 per day. I have been taking readings because we had an ASHP installed in November. In Jan /Feb readings were 22 -27 day. We don't have Gas. 2 bed stone built house rurally situated, 2 adults.

daffodilandtulip · 18/07/2022 09:54

Last month was 219, so just over 7 kWh a day.

daffodilandtulip · 18/07/2022 09:55

Sorry that's for 1 adult and 2 teens in a three bedroom, three storey.

Crazymadchickenlady · 18/07/2022 09:56

We use about 16-20 kWh a day. DH and daughter both home all day and four of us home each evening. Tumble drier gets used a lot and we have an electric oven but gas central heating.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/07/2022 09:58

Annually, about 7000. Which is much more than average but we have an ev car, completely electric kitchen, tech mad kids and I work from home. We got solar power and a home battery this year to avoid being hammered by the increasing rates.

User952539 · 18/07/2022 10:13

Gosh some of these are really low.

im not sure how we are apparently clocking up around 30kwh per day.

two adults a 17 yo and a 15 yo. I work from home but just use a laptop really. DH works from home three days a week and has a desktop with a couple of monitors so I can make sure he’s turning that off each night. We have a frame TV which is effectively on standby constantly. All lighting is led. I do have three fridges (American fridge freezer, drinks fridge and a chest freezer in the garage). Cooker is electric. It still seems really high

Sorry I should have added - not using tumble dryer very often currently, use washing machine once every two days, use dishwasher every night, have 2 fridge freezers and 1 chest freezer.

SkeletonFight · 18/07/2022 10:17

and a wine fridge

SkeletonFight · 18/07/2022 10:18

@User952539 do you have a smart meter?

cloverleafy · 18/07/2022 10:18

Around 5,000 per year. That's 2 adults both wfh, plus 3 children.

AuntieMarys · 18/07/2022 10:19

Just had monthly bill in...213 so about 7 a day. 2 of us, 3 storey house

Plantstrees · 18/07/2022 10:24

All electric here. We have been using about 12,000 per year. Four of us in an old draughty 3 bed house that hadn't been occupied for a few years so lots of work done. I have recently installed double glazing and solar panels otherwise at current prices it would be crippling.

MintJulia · 18/07/2022 10:26

400 every three months so about 4.5 a day, four bed house, one adult, one teenager. No tumble dryer.

@User952539 do you have a smart meter?

I do but it’s clearly not working. It currently says that I used over 1000kwh yesterday…

I’ve banned anyone from using the tumble dryer since may but in any event it’s a heat pump dryer so it’s supposed to be better

It’s currently telling me it isn’t working properly. No shit!

Yours does seem really really high. I thought ours was high at 16-20 kwh a day. We have a frame TV too and lots of TVs and computers and a heat pump tumble drier. We are just looking at putting solar panels on the roof to help with the cost.

Have you checked the immersion heater isn't switched on? We have one even though we have a gas boiler but it's always switched off. Otherwise you could have a faulty meter.

PinkDaffodil2 · 18/07/2022 10:35

4/ day, two adults plus toddler in a 4 bed semi. We use the tumble dryer a few times a week. DH works from home a few days a week.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/07/2022 10:49

We averaged 14 per day last month. 4 of us, DH and I working from home. I use the tumble dryer more than I should.

LanaDelBoy · 18/07/2022 10:58

I thought we were on the higher end - last month we took regular readings and it was about 25-30 a day. Big house, dh uses lots of big monitors to work from home FT. We need to do something about it, as don't run appliances overly much - telly not really on in the day, washing not done every day. Getting solar panels and hopefully the smart meter thing we get with it (don't have one at the moment) will help us pin down what's costing so much too.

LanaDelBoy · 18/07/2022 11:02

Last 12 months was 9562 Kwh if that's helpful. And that's with 2 months of dh putting on immersion briefly a few times which we don't otherwise use, and really clearly (in retrospect) made our usage skyrocket in those months.

User952539 · 18/07/2022 11:03

I’m genuinely wondering whether someone is using our electricity!

immersion heater not left on
