How many kWh of electricity do you use a day??

I know I know it’s another energy one but ours seems to have gone nuts.

im being told by British Gas that we are using over 11000 kWh of electricity every year. We don’t have electric heating. We don’t think we are particularly big users of electricity but we clearly are.

google seems to say that the average is 4000 for a detached family home. This is making me question how ours can be so large since whilst our house is quite big it isn’t full of people using power in every room.

how much do you use on average a day according to your smart meter? And how big is your house/how many in it?

We're averaging about 7kwH a day this week and that's included 2 of us wfh, 2 dc on devices, using the oven, washing machine and tumble dryer, a chest freezer and a fridge freezer. The tumble dryer went on when we were generating excess solar power. So yes, your use does seem high.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 30/07/2022 12:52

Oh and dishwasher once a day too.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 30/07/2022 12:59

I worked out it's 6.5 Kw

MomwasCasual · 30/07/2022 13:13

8-9 kWh at the moment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2022 19:49

Yearly 5656

this month 489 a month or 16 a day. Was 14 last year

Last month 365 a month or 12 a day. Says used 7 last year - not sure that’s right

Month before 375 a month or 13 a day. Was 17 last year

this month have spa up and running so higher

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2022 19:52

We do have a fish tank and wondering if that eats electricity

plus 3 freezers. What’s the basic cost of running 1

dw on once a day

washing machine on 3/4 times a week

is there a huge diff between a 60min Wash at 60 v 45min at 40

User639921 · 03/08/2022 20:03

Gaming computers use more energy, the family aren't using them are they, as they are often used for quite a few hours at a time

User639921 · 03/08/2022 20:11

Ours is about 4500 a year for 2 retired adults in an average 3 bed 1930s house, 2 x telly on a lot, 2 Sky boxes which I'm sure use a lot as they are often warm, 3 freezers and 2 fridges though 1 fridge and freezer is off all summer as DH uses them for winter fishing bait, electric shower, cooker, daily dishwasher, washing machine about 4 times a week and Tumble dryer in winter.

Honourofgrayskull · 03/08/2022 20:27

Stupid question but where do you see how many units you're using? I have a keypad and am really monitoring how much we use in terms of cost but I don't see a unit reading.

Svara · 03/08/2022 20:31

Just under 3kwh a day, about 85kwh a month. Two people, three bed semi.

Afterfire · 03/08/2022 20:33

Ours is about 16 a day. Family of 4 including one disabled child who creates a lot of washing (!) and one 19 year old who is eating / showering / staying up late using gadgets etc. I do one wash load every day and use the dryer maybe 2/3 times a week. We have an electric shower and I suspect our usage is higher than many due to this (we all shower every day and it’s a 10.5kw shower). There’s a lot of cooking different meals as none of us like the same things so the toaster / oven / kettle etc is always on the go. I’d like to try and reduce our usage but it just seems impossible as everyone is so set in their ways.

3-4 kW a day, on average.

Two adults, 3 bed house. No tumble dryer or dishwasher, batch cook, appliances like TV and WiFi get turned off at the wall when not used, lights off when not needed etc!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 03/08/2022 22:01

20 a day, family of 4 with two EVs. I rarely tumble dry.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 03/08/2022 22:50

@User952539 so with two EVs we're using 7200 a year, how are you using 11000? Surely something must be off?

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 22:55

Ours is 3-4kw a day!

2 x WFH adults
1 x Xbox / Switch / TV watching DS

standing charge is 54p though :(

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 22:57

And we use a washing machine & tumble dryer most days as we swim a lot

I do lots of baking so the oven is on a few times too.

so 3-4Kw is pretty good! :)

User639921 · 03/08/2022 22:57

A lot of MN do loads of washing, threads and threads of people washing towels at 60, some daily, some wash 2 or 3 times a day, every day. I haven't seen so many threads of this type lately, probably embarrassed by it.

marlowe5 · 03/08/2022 23:05

I've got an oldish American style smeg fridge that makes quite a lot of noise and having read your thread I've looked out our electricity use and it's pretty awful. Wondering if it's the fridge.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/08/2022 23:10

2 bed 2 adults. Meter read monthly - cost including standing charge for gas and electric combined on variable rate is around £50.

AlwaysLatte · 03/08/2022 23:11

About 40kwh per day - roughly £12 a day on average.

teenagetantrums · 03/08/2022 23:13

About 90khw a month so 3 khw a day. Two adults. Both work outside home but one only part time. Normal stuff kettle TVs phones, washing machine. Gas hob electric oven. Gas hot water.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2022 23:31

AlwaysLatte · 03/08/2022 23:11

omg @AlwaysLatte thats very high

thought mine at 14/16 was bad when everyone else seems to be 3/4 a day

AlwaysLatte · 03/08/2022 23:35

I know :-( we're not on mains gas here so the cooking is all electric, plus electric car, two teens with gaming set ups including lots of lights etc, and we are also both home all day, cooking during the day plus washing for 4 plus dog, also swimming/sports gear most days. The hot weather hasn't helped - air con on the really hot days we had and fans going all night in the bedrooms. It all adds up!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2022 23:57

Yes I wondered about fans. Think was about 3.4p per hour so 12hrs 7/7 is 40p x 7 £2.85 a week x 4 w for a month £11.42

onv depends on fan watage and cost per kw

was using it most nights so rounding it roughly if had 3 on - ours - dd 5 and have older dsd staying who always has fan on that’s £30 a month 🙀🙀🙀
