How many kWh of electricity do you use a day??

User952539 · 18/07/2022 09:42

I know I know it’s another energy one but ours seems to have gone nuts.

im being told by British Gas that we are using over 11000 kWh of electricity every year. We don’t have electric heating. We don’t think we are particularly big users of electricity but we clearly are.

google seems to say that the average is 4000 for a detached family home. This is making me question how ours can be so large since whilst our house is quite big it isn’t full of people using power in every room.

how much do you use on average a day according to your smart meter? And how big is your house/how many in it?

We are a household of 4 adults, all work from home, we were easily using 20+ units a day, we installed solar with battery, made an enormous difference to our electricity bill, using on average 2 units a day from the grid now, this will obviously increase in winter. But if you can afford to do it, I would recommend.

Gufo · 18/07/2022 11:10

6-8 KWH a day looking at my last meter readings - we've stopped using the tumble and reduced using the oven.

mynellie · 18/07/2022 11:19

We use about 5 a day 2 adults and both on laptops and general devices , not using tumble at moment but that normally pushes us up to 6-7 a day in winter at the most

Ifailed · 18/07/2022 11:23

124 kWh for the past 30 days - just over 4 per day.

Gosh some of these are really low.

im not sure how we are apparently clocking up around 30kwh per day.

two adults a 17 yo and a 15 yo. I work from home but just use a laptop really. DH works from home three days a week and has a desktop with a couple of monitors so I can make sure he’s turning that off each night. We have a frame TV which is effectively on standby constantly. All lighting is led. I do have three fridges (American fridge freezer, drinks fridge and a chest freezer in the garage). Cooker is electric. It still seems really high

It’s your extra fridges and the freezer

User952539 · 18/07/2022 11:34

Well you say it’s our wine fridge and the chest freezer but a pp also has three and her usage is much lower.

I’ve banned anyone from using the tumble dryer since may but in any event it’s a heat pump dryer so it’s supposed to be better

A heat pump dryer is infinitely better. It’s fridges. The cooling systems use a lot of energy. Also they are more energy efficient when full.

I quit using a chest freezer and tumble dryer (not heat pump) just to reduce harmful emissions and it has brought me absolutely no hardship.

popcorndiva · 18/07/2022 11:37

Summer it's 5.5kw as don't use tumble drier hardly and no lights needed during day.

Winter it's more 9 -10 kW so I think we average around 8kw

jazzandh · 18/07/2022 11:41

We use 1000Kwh per month as well (summer) Family of 4 very tech heavy with DH working from home. Eldest DS17 has loads of kit that is on. All led lights, rarely use tumble dryer, run appliances on economy settings( but at least one wash load a day and the dishwasher is run once). We do have an electric car which uses about 250Kwh per month. So I would say an error somewhere....

Dozycuntlaters · 18/07/2022 11:41

I use about 20 a day, bungalow with 2 people in plus I have a hot tub which is heating all the time. Without the hot tub it would be more like 14 a day, something like that.

TheFridayRabbit · 18/07/2022 11:42

How is your hot water heated? If it’s an electric cylinder you can reduce energy waste by insulating it. You get wraps at homeware stores.

You can also check the temperature setting so it’s at an optimum level.

If I was you I would be sticking to one fridge, only using cold water for washing clothes, be mindful of length of showers (difficult if you have teenagers), fit thermal drapes, and install a heat pump system for heating and cooling.

Hugasauras · 18/07/2022 11:43

We are a four-bedroom detached, both WFH and do use tumble drier fairly often. We are generally around 10-13 a day, sometimes less if we are out and about and sometimes more if it's bad weather and we do several tumble loads. Think we are estimated around 5000 a year.

User952539 · 18/07/2022 11:47

Hot water is oil as is the heating. Showers are not electric.

I do accept the house isn’t small and so I’d never really looked too closely at the figures but these numbers seem very high

Worldgonecrazy · 18/07/2022 11:56

We use just under 5000 a year for a four bedroom house with 8 person hot tub. Changing all our light bulbs to led saved quite a bit. I record it every week and was surprised how big a difference it made.

We have two fridge-freezers and we are pretty high as I posted earlier. Wondering whether to get rid of one - but it'd be the more conveniently located one as that's smaller :(

AndSoFinally · 18/07/2022 12:05

I can believe it (not the 1000Kwh in a day!) depending on what equipment you use.

We use around 15/day but when teen DS comes round and uses his gaming PC all day, it shoots up to about 25. Add in a couple of wash loads and it could easily hit 30.

We are in a 6 bed, people at home range from 2 adults and a baby to 4 adults, 3 DC, and a baby, depending on who's here.

crustybreaddarling · 18/07/2022 12:05

4 kWh/day. That's basically covering me wfh on my pc, radio, kettle, microwave, dishwasher, pressure cooker and washing machine.

I limit my oven usage, esp when it's so hot, so that's not been used at all for the last few weeks.

One person in a 3-bed house.

RainingYetAgain · 18/07/2022 12:06

11000Kw per year -seriously?
I have an Air Source Heat pump, so all electric heating, and an electric oven, tumble drier used once per week for DS's non iron shirts, Calor gas hob. We have 3 adults in a large 4 bed detached in a draughty part of the world and we use 9000Kw annually,. Daily use is 37-40Kw.day in the depth of winter 13 at the moment according to my spreadsheet.

spagbog5 · 18/07/2022 12:13

We used 11,720 last year , just checked the bill

We are a large 5 bed detached old house with underfloor heating in 2 rooms ( eye wateringly expensive )
Two large fridge/ freezers , outbuildings and an in ground swimming pool with the filter on 24 hours a day sometimes.

spagbog5 · 18/07/2022 12:13

We're higher than you OP - and whilst I appreciate the size of the house has a bearing, there are only two of us living here full time, and DH showers at the gym every morning. This latest rise in cost has made me start looking at this closely. We have just had smart meters installed, but according to the data, we used no gas over the past four days. Which leads me to wonder if we are heating all of our water by electricity, which could explain things.

Feeling guilty for not properly looking at this ages ago - having time is a benefit of retirement!

OnlyYourSharpestMinds · 18/07/2022 12:33

Between 4 and 6 kw per day - for the four of us, two adults working from home & two children. We run the washing machine every day, all have showers every day, dishwasher every other day and laptops all day.

Since we got a smart meter, I've been pleasantly surprised at how little electricity we've been using. Because our DD for energy is ridiculously high we've been building up a nice bit of credit for the winter.

I agree it will be the fridges/freezers pushing up your usage - if you Google what appliances use the most energy, they are always top of the list.

BEAM123 · 18/07/2022 12:37

2.44kwh yesterday, was out most of the day, 3.49kwh on Friday when I was working from home and did some laundry.

Just me at home.
