@Peristress

Hi all been following you guys with all the ups and downs. Don't think I'm cut out for this. Twenty odd weeks into a loft conversion still not finished. Just found out firm has gone into administration. I have no words.
What a nightmare! What happens next?
LivingInABuildingSite · 03/11/2021 14:23

IndecisiveLurcher - loving that roof!

The lantern is in, I love it. It’s hard to capture in a photo, it is big, it’s 4m x 2m I think.

The doors are 6m wide, can’t remember the height but was over 2m I think.

Peristress · 03/11/2021 15:06

@Callmejudith, @LivingInABuildingSite
Luckily most work has been done. Windows to dormer were fitted a couple of weeks ago. Waiting for 2nd fix plumbing to be completed to ensuite. Doors still need to be hung. Electrician is back here now dealing with an issue with the lights. It's been so stressful done nothing but chase them since August the communication has been dire. When they do eventually call me I have to listen to nonsense...

Indecisivelurcher · 03/11/2021 15:12

@Peristress what an absolute nightmare! I sympathise, when we got our kitchen done 5yrs ago the company ripped everything out then went bust and left us with nothing... I was due with my 2nd dc at the time, it was not good!!! The plus side was we got rescued by some amazing trades. One of which is back next week to refit kitchen for us! Hopefully somebody will come along for your?!

If you are near Worcester at all that's where my builders are based, they are actually a loft conversion specialist company, let me know if you want a contact.

Callmejudith · 03/11/2021 15:17

@LivingInABuildingSite so fab. Mahoosive doors and windows.

Example of what happens when you're not specific enough. Said to dh wanted radiator at the end of the sofa. I meant the other end... Now have a radiator in the middle of the room 😂 it was all plastered so quick, I decided not to ask them to move it. Which I am currently regretting!!! Hopefully it'll be OK with the chairs going here, side table, floor lamp and big plant that I've got in my head!

Argh @Indecisivelurcher that's annoying but it looks fine to me.

I also love your paint effect you've got - so cool

@MissFritton65
I seem to have a bit of an unhelpful person on the end of my support ticket at DIY Kitchens who doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about. Could you describe how you did yours and possibly a pic please? Then I can show him ( if you can download pics from here)
Love everyone else's progress. I am just stuck now 🙃

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 17:43

@sluj unfortunately I can't post a picture as our kitchen is currently in 92 boxes as it hasn't been fitted yet! I know we have the CAD picture from DIY somewhere so I'll try to upload that so you can see how they have designed it.

Peristress · 03/11/2021 17:50

@Indecisivelurcher, not near you, but thank you. Its beyond me how these firms can treat people in this way. They don't give a shit about the stress it causes to families. Glad you got it sorted in the end. The radiator looks ok to me, but if your not happy get them to move it and patch up the wall.
Main guy told me he will come on Friday morning to discuss where we go from here with regard to how outstanding jobs will be paid. This will be down to us to pay for. I've made staged payments so far and yet to make a final payment. Whilst they were working on my loft they started other jobs they would have been well aware of the situation they were in.To treat people this way is disgusting, it can be hard to get other trades to finish off other people's work. I was also hoping to start an extension this year but with the delays with the loft just didn't have the head space to sort out another build.

sluj · 03/11/2021 18:03

@MissFritton65
Thank you, I'd appreciate that. Did you ever get to talk to an actual person or just by support ticket?

PoshWatchShitShoes · 03/11/2021 18:43

Loving the sky garden @Indecisivelurcher. Such a clever idea!!

The radiator will actually blend in and no one will notice once the room is dressed. Feel your pain though about communicating one thing and then someone interpreting it differently.. that's how my builders threw away a newish £600 radiator and kept the shit one on site 🤦🏼‍♀️

So sorry to hear about the bust builder @Peristress. Hopefully you can get the finishing bits done quickly.

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 18:47

@sluj my husband spoke to DIY support team and we will have filler panels on top of the wall units up to the ceiling. I've uploaded the design but I'm not sure it shows it clearly.

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 18:50

@sluj ignore the picture - that's the one showing what we didn't wantBlush

kitchenhail · 03/11/2021 18:51

@sluj my first support ticket the person was incredibly unhelpful. Second one the person on the other end was great and rang me twice. Don't know how/if you can change person halfway through a support ticket though, but just to reassure you some of them are fab!

Peristress · 03/11/2021 19:01

@PoshWatchShitShoes Thanks I'm hoping it will all be sorted quickly one of the guys has just texted me and said they have arranged for the doors to be hung to bedrooms on Monday.

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 19:08

@sluj this is what we are having as you can see the wall cupboards go to the ceiling plus the fridge/freezer is also going into a housing to the ceiling.

sluj · 03/11/2021 19:25

@MissFritton65 Thank you, that exact what I wanted to achieve. How did you get it to show like that on the planner? Will you have to cut panels to size? If so how will you do the 90 degree return to the wall? Thank you

RebelGeek76 · 03/11/2021 20:19

@Indecisivelurcher I love your green roof, will look so pretty in spring/summer. We ended up with a few wrinkles in our EPDM roof (DIY install) so have been toying with the idea of turning it into a green roof later, it's good to see an example.

@Peristress sorry to hear about your delays and building company, no advice to offer but I hope you get a knight in shining armour to bring you to the finishing point and will have forgotten about the stressful bits in between.

@sluj I found talking to someone at DIY more helpful in my experience. We opted for no trim and to raise the legs as high as we could so we ended up with a shadow gap at top of units as neither of us are keen on traditional cornices/pelmets. We had the 2300mm tall units + 900mm wall and the shadow gap is about 30-40mm above, probably could've used 18mm end panels/fillers to make gap smaller, could probably still do this if we have panels left over. Pic I've attached hopefully shows this.

We have lights and sockets yay and oven/microwave in though can't use at sane time yet 🤣. Laid UFH but still not connected to manifold (plumber sorting on Friday) and we've started laying flooring...my DH is cursing under his breath every 5 mins about my choice of herringbone pattern, setting up the first few rows was the hardest bit, hopefully we'll fly through rest of it. Still got finishing touches to sort and not even thinking about utility/shower room which we've targeted to complete for Christmas!!

@RebelGeek76 Thank you, got one knight here already, my DH, in the loft now finishing off little jobs they haven't done like putting in the window sills which I didn't realise hadn't been done. Through out the build its be mainly me sorting things out, chasing up emails phonecalls etc but the amount he has done in the last couple of weeks after work painting, redoing some bits they didn't do properly he's been amazing. I've decided I won't kick him out Smile
Yours is looking really good. Nice to see things progressing for everyone.

Indecisivelurcher · 03/11/2021 21:03

That's a brilliant room @RebelGeek76

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 21:18

@sluj speaking to DIY is the way forward. They were great and sorted it all for us plus our joiner is fitting it all and very experienced.

MissFritton65 · 03/11/2021 21:21

We are getting there! Scaffolding should be down on the weekend and windows due in 10 days.
