I'd it really annoying having a draining board on the left? ( for right handed people)

We are installing a bowl and a half sink into our temporary kitchen (should have to last a6 months to a year) and the draining board if kept on the right would have to go over the join of the worktops. Do any of you right handers have a draining board on the left and if so, does it drive you nuts?

Mine is on the left and I’ve never even thought about it until I read your post 😀

kymeraray · 26/09/2021 11:32

I have one on the left and I’m right handed. Have never thought about it tbh- it’s fine!

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 26/09/2021 11:32

So no!

StColumbofNavron · 26/09/2021 11:33

I’ve literally never ever thought about this, but mine is on the left and it seems fine.

thelastgoldeneagle · 26/09/2021 11:33

Ditto here - ours is on the left. Never even thought about it.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 26/09/2021 11:33

I don't think I have ever lived in a house where the draining board wasn't on the left!

It's fine!

HappyPumpkin81 · 26/09/2021 11:34

I'm right handed and had my draining board specifically fitted so it was on the left.

Bloomsburyreader · 26/09/2021 11:34

So relieved to hear that! We currently have an industrial style sink with drainers on both sides and I always use the one on the right but apparently it hadn't occurred to my husband either he never does the washing up so I assumed that's why

I do and it's the correct way for me. I hold a dish in my left hand, wash it with sponge in my right hand then put it on the drainer to the left. If the drainer was on the right it would be the 'wrong' side and very awkward.

myadhdusername · 26/09/2021 11:34

I’m left handed and mine is on the right. Doesn’t bother me at all.

Chewbecca · 26/09/2021 11:35

We have draining on both sides of the sink but the left hand side one is the one we tend to use for stacking crockery after washing - feels natural. (& We are right handed)

FindingMeno · 26/09/2021 11:35

I'd never given it a thought!
It's fine!

Perfectly explained.

Draining boards are usually on the left. I'm right handed and find it awkward to use a board on the right.

dementedpixie · 26/09/2021 11:38

Mine is on the left too and I'm right handed. Works fine

waybill · 26/09/2021 11:39

Left side draining board for right-handed people is the right way round imo.
Hold article with left hand and clean it with dishcloth/mop/sponge in right hand. Use left hand to put article on draining board.

Smeds · 26/09/2021 11:43

Leftie here with a left side draining board. Technically its wrong for me because i hold a plate in my right hand and hold a cloth/brush in my left hand to clean it. So my right hand crosses over with the plate to stack it.

daisypond · 26/09/2021 11:47

Mine is on the left too. I can’t see why it makes any difference. Plates stacked on right of sink. Plates in sink. Plates on draining board to the left of sink.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/09/2021 11:51

I would go for the left if it's easier to install. You can always put a counter top draining board on the right if you feel that you need it after trying the left. Something like this.

BigWoollyJumpers · 26/09/2021 11:53

Left sided for right handed people is the standard. You would only request a right handed if you were left-handed. I've only ever seen left sided, or both sided.

Thecazelets · 26/09/2021 14:30

Never even thought about it - but ours is on the right. Installed by previous owners. Same in the utility room. Perhaps they were left handed? We're right handed but never use either of them as everything goes in the dishwasher, so I've never noticed whether it's inconvenient or not.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 26/09/2021 14:37

We've always had them on the left, as a right-hander it would feel totally wrong having them on the right as you hold the item with your left hand while cleaning it with your right.

PickAChew · 26/09/2021 14:41

We're left handed and ours is on the right because it works with the space, better. In our last house, we moved one from the left to the right because it worked with the space better.

bathorshower · 26/09/2021 14:44

Ours is on the left.

When we had a double drainer, we still had the rack on the left (which also put it into a corner); it worked fine for both of us (both right handed).

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/09/2021 14:51

Family of right-handed people here. We have a sink and a half with drainer on the right. It makes sense to me.
If I was doing something repetitive like filling a pile of envelopes with 3 different enclosures then I would work from left to right. Washing dishes is no different.
