I'd it really annoying having a draining board on the left? ( for right handed people)

We are installing a bowl and a half sink into our temporary kitchen (should have to last a6 months to a year) and the draining board if kept on the right would have to go over the join of the worktops. Do any of you right handers have a draining board on the left and if so, does it drive you nuts?

I’m left handed you just get used to having the draining on the rights most things are set up for right handers. It’ll probably confuse you for a bit until you get used to it. The bin in our tea room at work was in the same places for years then someone moved it, everyone still goes to the place it was. We moved it back and the new staff go to the old place. We are a confused group

@0blio

I do and it's the correct way for me. I hold a dish in my left hand, wash it with sponge in my right hand then put it on the drainer to the left. If the drainer was on the right it would be the 'wrong' side and very awkward.
Ditto. The drainer on the right is less efficient for me.

I’ve lived in lots of houses and the draining board is always on the left, ive never really thought about it though. Wonder if there’s a specific reason for it 🤔

Ours is on the left. Thought it was normal

maofteens · 26/09/2021 15:55

I have had it both sides and it doesn't bother me either way. My dishwasher is on the left too. One way of looking at it is you hold the object in your left hand and wash with your right so makes sense to then put it down on your left.

@MrsMoastyToasty

Family of right-handed people here. We have a sink and a half with drainer on the right. It makes sense to me. If I was doing something repetitive like filling a pile of envelopes with 3 different enclosures then I would work from left to right. Washing dishes is no different.
This is exactly why I assumed it should be on the right but now I know I'm only one of the few who feel this way. What a dilemma for the new long-term kitchen!

Both of mine (kitchen and utility) are on the left and I've never thought about it before. Its not awkward. But it does make me feel a bit sad for my left-handed child that the world is set up for right handed people and we never need to think about things like that but they just have to adapt ☹️

@ColonelNobbyNobbs

Mine is on the left and I’ve never even thought about it until I read your post 😀

@myadhdusername

I’m left handed and mine is on the right. Doesn’t bother me at all.
Me too.
FurierTransform · 26/09/2021 20:45

I actually thought draining board on the left was the standard? I'm fairly sure all my houses have been that way round.

OldTinHat · 26/09/2021 20:46

Mine have all been on the left and I'm right handed. Never been a problem.

pleatedblind · 26/09/2021 20:50

I've lived with both - no problems at all with either.

Asdf12345 · 26/09/2021 20:50

Ours is on the right both in the kitchen and utility room. Seems to work fine (we are both right handed), honestly couldn’t say what way round they were anywhere else we have lived.

Bumpinthenight · 26/09/2021 21:05

I'm right handed and our drainer is on the left. My SIL is left handed and hers is on the right. We both struggle to use each others drainers 🤣

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 26/09/2021 21:08

I do and its totally fine.

The only rule is that if you have a dishwasher to the side of your sink, the drainer shouldn't be on the same side as the dishwasher. (Because it's far more convenient to stack dirty stuff right above the dishwasher, on the opposite side to the drainer.)

BobbyMcGeeAndMe · 26/09/2021 21:09

... and those women in Afghanistan thought they had problems!

BobbyMcGeeAndMe · 26/09/2021 21:09

joke

ChicChaos · 26/09/2021 21:15

My current kitchen has a right-hand drainer, the utility room only a few steps away has the drainer on the left. My first house had a right-hand drainer, second house had a double sink and we changed that to a left hand drainer.

mumjustmum · 26/09/2021 21:18

Old house on the left, new house (this year) on the right.
Both right handed.
You very quickly get used to it

StCharlotte · 26/09/2021 21:29

I'm left handed and ours is on the left. Pain in the arse.

cestunestilo · 27/09/2021 18:48

Just watched DH. He's right handed. He holds the plate to be washed in his left hand and scrubs with his right, therefore left drainer is actually more efficient .

( broken thumb is why I'm watching not doing ! )

CovidCorvid · 27/09/2021 18:52

I’m right handed and my drainer is on the right…only because otherwise it would be up against the wall/in a corner which I thought would be odd. I do think having it in the left would make more sense but I’m used to it now so don’t think it matters.

Nsky · 27/09/2021 19:01

Mine is on the right as suits kitchen, dishwasher underneath

Honestly, speaking as a left handed person, it's no big deal. Yes, the world is set up for right-handed people, but it is a very minor issue. Your child will be fine Smile
