If you are thinking of repainting your kitchen cupboards

Then here is a thread to document my progress!
I have boring melamine cupboard doors which a a dirty cream colour. Can't afford a new kitchen so after much research I decided to repaint them. I was inspired by this picture on Pinterest:
I chose Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint in Cotton for the top doors, and Ink for the bottom.
I've almost done the top ones - see pic for a sort of before and after!
Handles are from Amazon.
Going to start the bottom doors tonight! When they're done I'm thinking of covering the worktop in DC Fix - have a few samples which I might need some MN help with!

@MrsMcvities - it has a slight sheen in certain lights. I’ve attached a couple of photos, though they’re not very good.

I always use their paints now. Their Matt emulsion for walls is great. Very good pigmentation and a lovely flat finish. Much prefer all their paint to Farrow & Ball.

Ooooo it looks lovely! There’s a shop less than 2 miles from me that sells little greene paint so im going to go check it out tomorrow. Thank you!

@MrsMcvities - you’re welcome, happy browsing!

A little hoes a long way. A 2.5 litre tin did 2 coats on the outside of all the cupboards and there’s still some left over.

With their wall paint, I’ve found it better to use a brush. I’m in an old property with slightly pitted walls and think that a roller ends up wasting paint. A brush might take a little bit longer, but not much and the paint seems to go further.

Also, if there are any colours that you really like that aren’t on their list then here’s a handy tip. Pretty much every colour out there has a RAL code. As long as you know/can find out the code then LG can produce paint in that colour for you. Years ago, when I had a stable door fitted in my kitchen by a decent timber-framed door/window company and they let me know the RAL code for the colour I chose. I’ve had it successfully produced by LG so have been able to carry the colour on for the outside of my windows etc.

I really should be on commission for them 🤣. I hate painting, but try to do as much as I can myself to save paying someone. I’d rather pay a bit more for the actual product and end up with a decent result.

*goes, not hoes 🤣.

Furries · 22/10/2022 00:21

If you do want a specific colour produced, you can’t order it online. You have to email or phone them.

Hoes 🤣🤣

ah thank you! The shop near me said they have a little greene mixing machine (ha! Lol at the rhyme) so I wonder if they can mix up other colours, but anyway I darent get into the realm of mixing up colours or I’ll never made a decision!

theyve got things painted in the different paints so I’m going to try scratch it off with my nails, I’m sure they’ll love me for it.

did you need to put a primer or anything on?

I painted my kitchen 7 years ago. It's wearing really well. The cupboards are like new. The bench a little chipped on the wood edge but that is to be expected.

I worked from the bottom up, mainly because I needed to paint the doors on the bench and the bench top takes a week (?) before you can put weight on it. I used take away containers for the doors to rest on and a fine finish roller. I left the hinges attached to the cupboards and just unscrewed the doors - very easy with a cordless screwdriver.

The good thing about painting is you can try colours before getting a new kitchen. I thought I wanted off white cupboards but realised after that white would look better with the walls.

The kitchen itself only cost around $200 to repaint. Unfortunately, as you can see from the before picture, if I did the cupboards and counter, it wasn't going to match the walls. So I needed to paint those. Being open plan kitchen, dining, lounge, I had to paint all of that. Then the hallway would have looked off, so I had to do that. That left the two bedrooms and bathroom, so may as well do those too. The ceilings were looking aged as well, so I ended up painting the whole place from top to bottom, just because I wanted to paint the kitchen cupboards. The last thing to get painted was the kitchen cupboards and bench LOL Money and time well spent and still makes me very happy.

The cupboards aren't a feature colour as there is a burnt crimson feature wall in the lounge. Kitchen is accessorised in red (my favourite colour) so needs a neutral background.

Wow it looks great. What paint did you use?

Furries · 22/10/2022 10:17

@MrsMcvities - happy scratching!

I do use a primer/undercoat from LG when I’m doing wood/metal. it’s called ASP (All Surface Primer) and it comes in pretty much all of the colours that LG do.

k1233 · 22/10/2022 12:22

@MrsMcvities the doors were with White Knight Laminate paint (I'm in Australia so may not be in the UK). Bench top was rustoleum (I think).

If the cupboards are still sound, painting is a great option to get you through to a new kitchen.
