If you are thinking of repainting your kitchen cupboards

Then here is a thread to document my progress!
I have boring melamine cupboard doors which a a dirty cream colour. Can't afford a new kitchen so after much research I decided to repaint them. I was inspired by this picture on Pinterest:
I chose Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint in Cotton for the top doors, and Ink for the bottom.
I've almost done the top ones - see pic for a sort of before and after!
Handles are from Amazon.
Going to start the bottom doors tonight! When they're done I'm thinking of covering the worktop in DC Fix - have a few samples which I might need some MN help with!

@Cuddlywaterfall

First coat of Blue Ink:
You did t remove the handles before painting? Can I ask why?
Cuddlywaterfall · 25/09/2021 21:53

@SpeakingFranglais
For that door I couldn't get the handles off as the screws were too tight. I was too impatient for H to get home and do it Blush. It was a mistake though and I took all the other handles off before painting.

Also I was changing the handles anyway so wasn't worried about getting paint on them

You’ve done an amazing job, I would be tempted to do the whole kitchen blue as the blue is really lovely Smile

AuntyFungal · 25/09/2021 22:21

I used MSP (multi surface paint) from my local decorator’s shop. Colour matched to Little Green - China Clay (pale). Went from black to pink. Was very surprised how good they look.
Did do a light sand / wipe first and painted both sides of the doors.

Cuddlywaterfall · 26/09/2021 07:46

@AuntyFungal could we see pics do you think? I'd love to see a pink kitchen!

Hoping to resurrect this post
to see how irs
gping a year on before I slip off to buy paint today On a whim (not a total whim I’ve been thinking about it for ages but now I want to do it NOW) 👀

Youremyshininglight · 18/10/2022 07:48

Lurking with you mrsmcvities. I'm so tempted to do mine but worried it will chip. I hope you get a response 😊

yasminkhatun · 18/10/2022 20:40

So glad this post has come as I have been thinking about getting my units painted. Always been a lurker but never posted! Had to ask my opinion on my units.
what colour shall I paint the units? The splashback and worktop is tiled (cream & purple) which will be costly to replace and floor is brown vinyl.

Any feedback much appreciated!

I painted my kitchen but I found that they wore badly. I was doing little touch ups after 6 months.

I loved the colour change, and it was a nice way to extend the life of an old kitchen. But it also was a huge amount of work (I did all the steps recommended and took no short cuts)

I wouldn’t ever say don’t do it; but don’t believe that it’s going to be as hard wearing as the internet claims

Tittie · 19/10/2022 06:07

I second what @Whatsleftnow says. My doors have chipped and worn in places. It still looks better than before but I'm a bit disappointed.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/10/2022 10:11

Choose your paint wisely. Some paints are more likely to chip than others.

Do you have a type you'd recommend? I'm thinking of doing this - our kitchen doors are old and worn in the house we just moved into but we don't have the money yet for a new kitchen. So my paint job wouldn't need to last a decade or be perfect, but I'd like it to look as good as possible for a few years.

MrsMcvities · 20/10/2022 19:42

This is my fear, what brand paint did you use? I’ve been quoted 2k to get it professionally sprayed but I would really rather not spend loads of money on a kitchen we will change in about 2 years when we extend the house and the kitchen will move.

MrsMcvities · 20/10/2022 19:43

What brand did you use please! It’s so hard there’s so much hype online about certain brands which are total BS

It’s so hard isn’t it! I’ve been looking at the rust oleum colours, my cousin did hers last year and it’s not chipped and the paint has primer etc in it so it’s a very hard wearing multi surface paint I think (but still scared!) they have loads of colours online I’m going to order a couple samples, see how tough they are and see what colours work in my kitchen aa lighting plays a huge part in colours.

I’ve painted my pantry in white and my laundry room in navy. Really pleased with both. Very easy to do. No sanding. I used little greene satinwood for the laundry, I used frenchic in the pantry.

F4chrissakes · 20/10/2022 20:03

I painted my pine kitchen a while back using Autentico paints. Very happy with the results, but we've somehow managed to chip the finish in places, especially around the handles. Good job I didn't dispose of unused paint, I kept it back for touch ups. And I'd advise you do the same.

yasminkhatun · 20/10/2022 22:08

@MrsMcvities ooh, will have a look at rust oleom. Please let me know how you get on!

Furries · 21/10/2022 03:23

I’ve painted my kitchen cabinets twice in 10 years. The only reason I did it a second time was because I wanted a change of colour, nothing wrong otherwise.

Both times, I have used Little Greene paint - specifically the Tom’s Oil Eggshell. It’s pretty much bombproof. Never chipped, wipes clean easily. It’s not cheap, but it is definitely worth the money. I think it’s actually more of an “external/outdoor” finish, but I always use it internally for skirting, door/window frames etc as the finish is so good.

I’m not the best with my painting skills, but the cupboards look ok, no obvious brush-marks etc.

I’ve never heard of that particular paint… off to google it while I feed the baby before the big ones get up! Thanks.

does it have a sheen or is it matt?

Summersdreaming · 21/10/2022 07:31

If I was doing it myself I would use an external grade paint, like the multi surface ones mentioned above. I had mine sprayed and they used the paint they would use on an external door.

I also wrapped the worktops myself which turned out really well! Only a few months ago so can't say how long it will last yet.

😆 I didn’t attempt to paint my own kitchen since it was expensive and I didn’t want to mess it up but after the first coat I asked the painter to make sure there were some brush marks so that you could see it had been hand painted…

Furries · 21/10/2022 11:05

@MrsMcvities - it has a slight sheen in certain lights. I’ve attached a couple of photos, though they’re not very good.

I always use their paints now. Their Matt emulsion for walls is great. Very good pigmentation and a lovely flat finish. Much prefer all their paint to Farrow & Ball.
