If you are thinking of repainting your kitchen cupboards

Then here is a thread to document my progress!
I have boring melamine cupboard doors which a a dirty cream colour. Can't afford a new kitchen so after much research I decided to repaint them. I was inspired by this picture on Pinterest:
I chose Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint in Cotton for the top doors, and Ink for the bottom.
I've almost done the top ones - see pic for a sort of before and after!
Handles are from Amazon.
Going to start the bottom doors tonight! When they're done I'm thinking of covering the worktop in DC Fix - have a few samples which I might need some MN help with!

Love It !!!! Following :)

Lovely, yes have thought of it often and looked at that paint, but it seems such a huge chore! Asked decorator who was painting the ceilings, says he can do the whole lot for £300 inc materials, using eggshell so I think it's worth that.

Oo following!

How exciting! Love your colour choices. I’ve just started on mine but have had to practice on bargain doors from B&Q as scared of getting it wrong! I couldn’t commit to the white in my kitchen as it looked stark on my practice one (yours looks lovely). Have gone for an off white for the top run (F&B but colour matches) and studio green for the bottom. I am changing the tiles and worktops too.

Looking good so far. I have 2 tins of the same paint in Blueprint in the kitchen, waiting for me to start. Is it as easy to use as the instructions say, does it go on well?

ostrom · 16/09/2021 13:05

Looking forward to watching your progress!

Cuddlywaterfall · 16/09/2021 13:21

I must say a little goes a long way with the Rustoleum. The tins are 750ml, I've done 2 coats on all doors plus trim and there is still quite a bit left. It's about £22 a tin so I was a bit Shock but it's working out as good value.

Ooh @ostrom great work! Looking good so far 👍👍.
I'd say the paint is easy to use but you need to be careful, as once it's on, it's on for good! It's not like emulsion that you can fairly easily rub off if you go outside the lines so to speak. You will definitely need 2 coats. I did the first coat with a brush (Harris are pretty good) then the top coat with a foam roller. It dries quite quickly, you only need to leave an hour between the first and second coats. I'm doing mine piecemeal after the kids are in bed Grin

Also forgot to say I don't know what it would be like if you were painting a light colour on top of a dark but I'd say you may need 3 coats.

Great progress!
I have a wooden shaker kitchen that needs repainting. Just what colour to pick as have black granite worktops that the previous owners chose and find it a really hard to work out what goes. They had dark navy but it’s all too dark.

Cuddlywaterfall · 16/09/2021 15:33

@WhatAWasteOfOranges how about a pale sage or jade green? Seems v popular at the moment. Pinterest is great for ideas, I also follow #edwardianhouse on Instagram which has loads of people doing up their houses.

Can I ask how you cleaned the cupboard doors first?
I hate the color of my cabinets (a sort of mucky sage green, not my choice, was there when we moved in) but they always feel a little greasy/grubby even though I scrub and scrub them.

Did you sand before you painted, in order to get any possible greasy bits off?

(The rest of my house is clean, honestly. I have just never managed to get these bits to feel really clean).

Lilboots · 16/09/2021 16:19

I've just painted the cabinets in my kitchen. I gave them a good going over with Pink Stuff first, then sanded. Has only been two months so it's hard to say how well it will wear, but nothing has chipped or flaked so far so I'm guessing I must have at least cleaned thoroughly enough!

OP, I wish your thread had been up when I was trying to get the courage up for my own project!

Cuddlywaterfall · 16/09/2021 16:28

I used sugar soap which worked really well with all the grotty greasy bits . Apparently you don't need to sand with Rustoleum, which I was prepared to do, but actually it does go on really well without sanding.
Glad your cupboards are lasting @Lilboots !

I'm getting mine vinyl wrapped.

SirChenjins · 16/09/2021 16:39

Following! I love that dark blue - look forward to seeing how yours turn out Smile

VictoriaBun · 16/09/2021 16:43

Are you doing the insides as well ? Do you need to take the cupboard doors off to get to the edges ?

gibletjane · 16/09/2021 17:09

they look great

Cuddlywaterfall · 16/09/2021 17:35

@VictoriaBun I'm being lazy and not doing the insides but you do need to take them off to do the sides.

Thanks for all the tips. It's good to know as there are currently very few reviews for the Rustoleum paint. The testers I ordered went on a spare bit of shelf really well. There's an amazing array of colours!!

Cuddlywaterfall · 16/09/2021 17:59

Agreed it's hard to find many reviews. I'm hoping it lasts. But it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new kitchen!
